Two neighbours came before Jupiter and prayed him to grant their hearts' desire. Now one was full of avarice, and the other eaten up with envy. So to punish them both, Jupiter granted that each might have whatever he wished for himself, but only on condition that his neighbour had twice as much. The Avaricious man prayed to have a room full of gold. No sooner said than done; but all his joy was turned to grief when he found that his neighbour had two rooms full of the precious metal. Then came the turn of the Envious man, who could not bear to think that his neighbour had any joy at all. So he prayed that he might have one of his own eyes put out, by which means his companion would become totally blind.

Here’s a shot from our 2nd night in the Yosemite Workshop. By most standards this was a pretty nice sunset…great reflective color, etc….but compared to the night before it wasn’t as nice. Sunsets like that spoil you.

I still like photographing that area, and seeing the great images our class came up with.

To read about the workshop check here.

www.apertureacademy.com/photography-workshop-yosemite-oct...

Information for signing up for a workshop is there as well.

As far as my webpage update goes…its coming. Soon. These things often need a bit of troubleshooting, and testing before going live. I had to go get a seller’s permit yesterday…which, is an interesting process that I can only compare to a visit to the Social Security office in its bizarreness.

I have a permit now…so very soon the world will be seeing the new site.

I’m going to be super busy in the next few weeks. I have a workshop next weekend, followed by a little jaunt to the southwest to do some hiking and shooting for 7-days. I’m looking forward to getting that many awesome nights sleep in the Prius. My back is going to LOVE it.

I also get to have a cavity drilled at the dentist next week….which I am greatly looking forward to.

I’ve written about my love of all things dentistry before…but I can’t stress enough how much it pains me to go there. I opted on this last visit to go sans ‘happy gas.’ I WANTED the gas, but because my insurance won’t just get it for me…I have to shell out $47 for the stuff…and because I’m a cheap fool who sleeps in his vehicle on a regular basis, and skimps on luxuries to go out and shoot…I figured I’d rather eat a few roadside meals in the southwest and just endure the torture of my mouth being attacked by metal hooks.

My dentist has a new device for ‘cleaning’ now. This new hydro device is basically a smaller version of the tool they use to shoot out mountain sides looking for gold and other precious metals. Why this is good for me I do not know. It hurts, and it sounds like a million tiny demons shrieking inside my face. I wouldn’t have been shocked if the hygienist blew one of my molars across the road with that water canon.

It’s so much less fun being aware of what’s going on in your mouth. I like the drug induced bliss much more.

My dentist also has ‘flavors’ for the tooth polish now. I chose Rasberry…but really I could’ve picked any of them….they all taste like horrible version of what I think a foot soaked in vinegar might taste like if it were given the pleasant aroma of a fruit it did not taste like. I had pleasant raspberry aroma and horrible sour tasting teeth. It took all my un-gassed concentration to keep my tongue from accidentally hitting a tooth covered in the paste and giving me the heebie jeebies. MMMMM JUST like a raspberry scented 9-volt battery.

I thought I was going to escape without incident, but at the last second my dentist noticed a miniscule cavity…and he has to fix it. Next week. This time I’m getting the gas.

In 1903, during construction of Temiskaming & Northern Ontario Railway, a predecessor road to Ontario Northland, silver was discovered near Cobalt, Ont., which quickly triggered the growth and later incorporation of the town of Cobalt in 1906. Not too long after the precious metal was discovered near Cobalt, the surrounding area laid claim to one of the largest silver producing areas in the world, pumping out more than 30 million ounces, or about 938 tons, of silver in 1911 alone.

Throughout the mid-20th century, silver mining in Cobalt ebbed and flowed, and eventually diminished to one active mine today, although prospectors continue to explore for gold and diamonds, as well. Clearly, though, the silver mines of Cobalt left the most visible mark on local and Canadian history, as demonstrated by this silver mining structure that towers over Ontario Northland Train 113, a regular North Bay–Englehart, Ont., train carrying cars to the lumber and paper mills that today generate the greatest thrust for industry in northern Ontario.

Precious Metal created quite a spectacle Thursday night at the races.

2012 Reno Air Races.

The town of Wrightwood stretches up to encompass Mountain High, which sits between 8,000 and 9,000 feet. Here we were able to park and walk around on the narrow shoulder of the road from the main village to the slopes. You can see a footpath here as well.

"In the 1800's, prospectors were drawn to the mountains in search of precious metals. Samuel Guffy was one of those settlers. He lived in a cabin near a small lake that later would become the property of Wrightwood's founder.

The Swarthout Valley was named after the Swarthout brothers. The Swarthout family came to San Bernardino in 1851 with a large wagon train of Mormon immigrants from Salt Lake City, Utah. Three of the brothers, George, Nathan and Truman Swarthout, owned adjoining ranches in San Bernardino. They raised large herds of cattle and grazed them on public lands as did other ranchers at the time. The area they used for grazing became known as the Swarthout Valley, probably because they owned most of the cattle that were rounded up each year in the area." wwhistory.org/history-of-ww/

Hint: When adventuring anywhere in Skyrim, especially on and around the Ghostic (Arctic^^) Coast, ALWAYS carry a pickaxe AT ALL TIMES, you never know when you'll come across precious ore like this! ^^

The Grand Bazaar is a historical market situated in the capital of Iran, Tehran. Throughout its history, in addition to shops the Grand bazaar has contained banks and financiers, mosques and guest houses.

Traditionally, the Tehran bazaar was split into corridors, each specialising in different types of goods, including copper, carpets, paper, spices, and precious metals, as well as small traders selling all types of goods.[1] Today, modern goods are available as well, in addition to the many traditional corridor traders that still survive.

The Grand Bazaar is located in southern Tehran; its many corridors are over 10 km in length. There are several entrances, some of which are locked and guarded at night.[3]

Zabarjad Island, Red Sea. A tranquil island known only to divers and sailors. Named after a precious metal that was historically found only here due to its unique geology (Olivine, Topazos). The island is home to varieties of rare birds and the remote location makes its reefs out of reach to heavy handed fishers and divers.

Taxco is located in the north-central part of the state, 135 kilometres from the state capital of Chilpancingo and 170 kilometres southwest of Mexico City.

It is a small but charming “Magical Town” nestled in an area surrounded by great hills and mountains, thanks to the intense exploitation of its silver deposits. Its people still live from the commerce and manufacture of objects that the precious metal allows; the baroque constructions raised during the mining boom of the Colony are still preserved.

Any terrace is good to contemplate those jewels of the past, the new and small must be sought among the cobbled streets that go up and down everywhere. In addition, Taxco has a peculiar beauty, because this magnificent Magical Town has the ability to transport us to another time and space, just to the time of colonial Mexico.

2011 Pylon Racing Seminar.

This was given to me a long time ago and it is treasured because it reminds me of when our twin boys were two little monkeys. It is precious metal to me.

"Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good thing bestowed and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation, or no shifting shadow."

Our Father gives only good things and perfect gifts. It's a truth we rely upon. What is James saying, though, about being deceived? Knowing dokimē and dokimazo in Greek helps answer that question. Examine, test, experience and prove/approve are the English words used to explain the term. The meaning depicts removing impurities from valuable metal we are to examine and inspect for purity. The reference is self-examination (we are that precious metal!), an honest inspection of how we are progressing in our walk with the LORD. Examples of this examination are in 1 Corinthians 11:28, "... but let a man (person) examine himself ...," Philemon 1:10, "approve the things that are excellent" and Romans 5:3b-4, " ... knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope;"

The next verse is a perfect example of God's good things ... "Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us." Romans 5:5. How incredibly awesome!!!

Satan, society, worldly ambition, social ambition, personal ambition ... anything that gets in the way of our pure worship can deceive us! Tribulations help us to understand how we are to rely upon God. In this way, we're able to fully understand and utilize every good thing that our loving Father bestows upon us. That is His promise; He will never change! He always give us every good thing and perfect gift. Our daily job is not to be deceived by the attempts to pull us away from God's good gifts! Believe me ... God's gifts are everywhere, if we but seek, knock and ask!

Gold and silver were mined here but the area contained the largest deposits of copper ever found anywhere at anytime.

After mining, less than a 100 people remained in Jerome and it became known for a time as a ghost town. But locals turned to tourism and the town today can be crowded on weekends and hsa many established galleris, restaurants, gift shops, a mining museum and state park in this National Historic Landmark.

Looking NW, somewhere west of Winterhold, down at the Ghostic shoreline, on a seemingly rare and beautifully clear but crisp day....

What did I say about bringing a pickaxe? Eh??^^ These high latitudes are not nearly as "barren and desolate" as they may appear....^^

Mining More AND faster (9 ore in 3 pickaxe swings)

Troy weights for precious metals.

This 1oz weight was found as a set at the crushing mill for Grogwynion Lead mine, famed also for its Silver.

Aberystwyth was caught up in the English civil war because of its silver mint.

This set dates from much later, the V is for Queen Victoria and there is a mis-stamped crown above the V.

The shield with small cross in the upper left hand quadrant and a 2 underneath is as yet a mystery to me but almost certainly represents the area where the weights were authorised.

For the first half of the 20th century, the desert land now known as Joshua Tree National Park was scattered with miners on the hunt for gold and silver. When ore was mined, it was sent to a mill to be crushed and have the precious metal extracted. The ore from Desert Queen Mine and other mining operations passed through Wall Street Mill, which is located in Queen Valley near the Wonderland of Rocks. Today Wall Street Mill is considered the best-preserved gold mill in Joshua Tree and listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Sunrise at Redcar.

Worth a look in lightbox.

Barns had been restored by the Audubon Preserve but thieves have since gone in and stripped them of precious metals....the barns were sagging & listing severely so large metal cables and heavy fittings were used to shore them up, (they were brass I think) so of course were stolen right away. There are some crummy people living in this area.... cost prohibitive to replace them again so the barns will now fall to ruin. What a shame

Faced with that sunset, I wondered if it was worth continuing to dig deep into the earth in search of precious metals....wouldn't be enough raising our eyes to heaven for finding all gold in the world?

Precious Metal Starting up for Saturday's Silver Race

1914 sovereign with Benedetto Pistrucci's engraving.

The sovereign is a gold coin of the United Kingdom, with a nominal value of one pound sterling but in practice used as a bullion coin. A bullion coin is a coin struck from precious metal and kept as a store of value or an investment, rather than used in day-to-day commerce. Bullion coins sell for a premium over the market price of the metal on the commodities exchanges.

Financial experts often compare Bitcoin to gold. Both assets are scarce, valuable, and preserve some of their value over time. VanEck’s Gabor Gurbacs, however, is confident Bitcoin can triple its market cap if it takes away part of the precious metal’s market share. Gurbacs Is Bullish on Bitcoin Over the past few years, numerous comparisons between […]

Today it was National Silverday in Schoonhoven. Schoonhoven is known for many things, amongst them it's silverware. On Pentecost Monday, tradionally, all schools, guilds, sellers and jewelers promote their goods on stands throughout the centre of Schoonhoven.

There are also demonstrations by silversmiths and the silverschool of Schoonhoven. Not only silver products are visible for the audience, also gold, ceramic, titane and many other precious metals are showed. Other museums like the clock museum are open as well.

Estimated is that there are each year around 25.000 visitors, double the number of inhabitants of Schoonhoven.

Cufflink (EN)

Cufflinks are items of jewelry that are used to secure the cuffs of dress shirts. Cufflinks can be manufactured from a variety of different materials, such as glass, stone, leather, metal, precious metal or combinations of these. Securing of the cufflinks is usually achieved via toggles or reverses based on the design of the front section, which can be folded into position. There are also variants with chains or a rigid, bent rear section. The front sections of the cufflinks can be decorated with gemstones, inlays, inset material or enamel and designed in two or three-dimensional form.

Manchetknoop

Mt Zion has been excavated for coal, mercury, gold, silver, copper and other precious metals since the 1850's. The mining is expected to continue for many years to come as California has designated Mt. Zion as a mineral reserve to supply the construction needs of Contra Costa County.

Another one from the one awesome opportunity my brother and I got Thursday evening. HDR made this image pop the way I remember it. Prior to this shot she was getting 'used' as a prop for some pinup girls. I like only the "Metal" in the shot, she's sexy enough without the accessories. HA!

Here's the first rule of panning for gold: Go to a slow-moving stream where flecks of the precious metal have been found by others in the past. The second rule is this: Although gold is carried along by the current, it's heavier than water and thus rarely appears right on the surface. Look deeper. A third pointer is that if you do ultimately find substantial treasure, it'll be because you will have gradually accumulated a number flakes and nuggets over an extended period of time. You've got to be patient. Now, Aries, apply everything I just said to your search for metaphorical gold.

Durango was founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1880. The railroad arrived in Durango on August 5, 1881 and construction on the line to Silverton began in the fall of the same year. By July of 1882, the tracks to Silverton were completed and the train began hauling both passengers and freight.

From the very beginning, the railroad was promoted as a scenic route for passenger service although the line was constructed primarily to haul mine ores, both gold and silver, from the San Juan Mountains. It is estimated over $300 million in precious metals has been transported over this route.

By 1885 the population of Silverton had grown to 1100 and Otto Mears completed the toll road to Ouray and additional narrow gauge track out of Silverton was laid down in 1887. In 1893, 10 large mines in the Silverton district were forced to close when silver prices dropped from $1.05/oz to $.63/oz. Just three years later the Yankee Girl and Guston Mines played out. In Durango, the fire of 1889 virtually destroyed downtown and the first automobile arrived by train in 1902. By 1906, Mesa Verde was designated a National Park, increasing the potential for tourism promotions.

Throughout the next twenty years the railroad faced many challenges; slides, floods, snow, war and financial instability. When the US Government entered WW I, it assumed operation of the railroad. Shortly after resuming control of railroad operations, the D&RGW reorganized due to financial difficulties. Silverton suffered devastating effects from the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918 - 10 percent of the population died in just six weeks! In addition, the Gold King Mine closed, the Sunnyside Mine temporarily ceased operations for almost ten years and the Silverton Railroad closed.
