Grandin Pond. St Albert, Alberta.

A pair of Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus) raising young on an urban wetland in the suburbs of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. One adult cars for the youngster while the other searches for food to feed it.

It was interesting behaviour to observe over the hours, to the point where they became quite accustomed to my presence and totally ignored me.

A small diver found mostly across North America on northern marshes in summer, coastal bays in winter.

Most of its North American breeding range is located in Canada, extending from northwestern Ontario to British Columbia and north to Alaska (Western population). A small, isolated breeding population also exists in Quebec, where it is limited to the Magdalen islands.. Also widespread in Eurasia, where it is called Slavonian Grebe.

An update on this Slavonian Grebe that I photographed on New Year's Eve - we heard (via the internet) that 2 days after this photo was taken this poor little bird was found on the beach in a poorly condition and was taken to the vets, but unfortunately we heard that it didn't make it. No update on the reason for it's poorly state but it looked fit and healthy when we were there and was fishing well.

Many thanks to all who take the time to view, comment or fave my images.

A Horned Grebe (Podiceps azurites), a solitary nesting species, has claimed a small urban pond where it will nest, raise its young and defend the territory against all intruders.

There are numerous small storm water ponds throughout the city, primarily in new neighbourhoods, to temporarily hold heavy rainfall waters during a severe storm. It is very good flood control measure and provides lots of wetland habitat for a wide variety of bird and small mammals species in an urban setting. There wetlands are located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

It is always a pleasure to see these beautiful birds in breeding plumage.

Once spring arrives and the local ponds open up, the Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus) will set up territory, build a nest and begin the annual cycle of rearing a family. There are many small urban, flood water ponds in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and the grebes use them frequently.

We had a run over to the coast to see this Slavonian Grebe that has been paying a rare visit to our region. It's in it's winter plumage. A first for me!

A very dismal day with grey sky and choppy water .Hopefully this little beauty will stay a bit longer and i can make the journey on a sunnier day , when it might come a bit closer.

An adult Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus) in breeding plumage on a small urban in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

In the new housing developments in Edmonton, they have enacted a policy of building small wetlands to act as severe storm water retention ponds. These ponds will fill with excess water from the roadways and then slowly release water into drainage systems to the river.

This provides not only a temporary basin to save flooding of people's homes but provides wetlands for wildlife, including nesting bird species, as well as natural parks to walk through and enjoy in the residential neighbourhoods.

It has also provided me with many hours of peaceful observation to view and photograph courtship and family rearing behaviour of a number of waterbird species.

A Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus) sets up its nesting territory on an urban pond in southwest Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

The city has developed a number of these ponds to act as storm water ponds to accept heavy water flow during an intense rainstorm. After the storm, the water would then drain gradually into the sewer system.

This practise has provided a lot of nesting habitat for a variety of water birds and passerine species.
