From my wife's flower garden -- a phlox flower, with morning dew.

It's good to be back. Sometime while I was away, this photostream went over three million views. Thanks!

Isn't God a great artist?

This lovely phlox volunteered to root and bloom in an empty flower pot in my driveway. It's been blooming since the end of May, though it's just now starting to stop.

I'm still going to be mostly away from Flickr for a while.

EDIT, 8/19/12: Something just bit the stem in half. I hope the plant did some self seeding beforehand.

Phlox and Dahlias

in our garden - Frankfurt-Nordend

...and best viewed large.

Good morning and Happy Butterfly Monday to everyone. Just a single photo of what I consider to be one of our most beautiful butterflies, being the Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor). Seen here on either Smooth Phlox (Phlox glaberrima) or Garden Phlox (Phlox paniculata), I'm not sure which as both grow wild here along many country roadsides.

As for this photo, it's one of two Pipevine Swallowtails I spotted feeding, but as Pipevines usually do, they were constantly fluttering. Especially since they couldn't get a good foothold on these tiny flowers. Just as I was walking away in frustration from the lack of an opportunity for any good shots the above butterfly stopped feeding and began resting. Then a cloud blocked the sun and like a book unfolding it slowly spread its wings. In spite of being unprepared, I was able to get four quick shots, of which the above is the best, before it began feeding feverishly again.

I rarely see Pipevines and to get this near perfect open wing shot of what is a truly beautiful specimen made what was otherwise an uneventful day into a very special one.

Thank you for visiting...and I hope you have a truly great Monday and week.

This Carpenter Bee was sitting still with its head down at the base of one of the flowers. It remained still even as I poked and bumped the flowers with my camera to photograph it. I have observed behavior like this before. One explanation is that it is biting the bases of the flowers to steal nectar. However, I didn't observe any obvious movement from chewing or the usual leg and antennae movements I see bees make when they're they're nectaring on top of flowers.

Freed from the garden center these *fierce* dragons now guard our entry garden on Summer's Eve. : ))

When viewed LARGE the textures are much better.

P.S. for the gardeners out there that's Phlox paniculata on the left and Itea virginica (Virginia Sweetspire) in the background.
