Orchid. What are those fangs called? Anthers, antlers? LOL! Sorry : )

Phalaenopsis, the moth orchid, is perhaps the best orchid for growing in the home, and is also a favorite with greenhouse growers. Well-grown plants can flower often, sometimes with a few flowers throughout the year, though the main season is late winter into spring. Average home temperatures and conditions are usually sufficient. Flower stems on certain hybrids can be forced to rebloom by cutting the tip off after the initial flowering. Only healthy plants should be induced to flower repeatedly. Culture for Doritis, a related genus, thought by some to be conspecific with Phalaenopsis, and Doritaenopsis, a hybrid between the two genera, is the same as for pure Phalaenopsis.

I hide myself within my flower,

That fading from your Vase,

You, unsuspecting, feel for me --

Almost a loneliness.

- Phalaenopsis amabilis, more commonly known as the Moth Orchid -

Is a tropical plant and is referred to as “the flower of charm” in its native Indonesia, where it is one of three national flowers. Phalaenopsis amabilis has thick dark leaves that grow out from a short stem. The flower stalk grows taller than the main stem, crowning the rest of the plant with beautiful showy flowers. While the phalaenopsis orchid usually blooms in the winter, those that are grown indoors may have flowers present at just about any time of the year. The name of the plant itself, “Phalaenopsis,” is a reference to a group of large moths; the orchid blossoms give the impression of wings in flight. The soft flowers grow together, not in random clusters, but spaced in a graceful row off the stalk.

My new plant - Moon orchid (Phalaenopsis Amabilis)

Just opened yesterday. This is one of those line-bred puppies from Taiwan. It was a gift a year ago from Richard Takafuji of Orchid Center, Wai'anae. This subspecies is native to Taiwan, although they always seemed to be labelled as amabilis, but the labellum betrays that identification.

Widespread species found in Borneo, Java, Bali, Moluccas, Philippines, Sulawesi, Sumatra, Bismarck Archipelago, PNG and into Northern Queensland.
