Vor den Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur zu stehen ist sehr beeinruckend. Die Fassade ist toll gemacht. und ergibt ein Gesamtkunstwerk.
Standing before the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur is very impressive. The facade is great. And gives a total work of art.

For Dip-It-Thursday group Theme 23: Day&Night
When we went to KL i took a lot of pictures of the Petronas Towers.
Good thing i took a day&night shot in almost perfectly the same angle.
I visited two amazing places recently, Taipie and Kuala Lumpur, 5 days in Taipie and 3 days in Kuala Lumpur. Both have an iconic building. I know these two pictures are not the most original shot or creative angle as it has been photograph thousand times and probably there’s nothing special about these two pictures, but it is mine and I’m very proud of it :)). I don’t care about the timing and the weather (okay, maybe a little hehe) I’m so happy that I finally have my own Petronas Tower picture to post in my photostream. I do have some pictures of the twin tower but that was when I’m not into photography thingy :P
Thanks to my dear friend Myra www.flickr.com/photos/bee_cappy/ and Gius for driving me around in KL :) missing you guys already :(

The 88 floor Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur were the tallest buildings in the world between 1998 and 2004, until surpassed by Taipei 101. The skybridge which is located on the 41st and 42nd floors is the highest 2-storey bridge in the world.
Kuala Lumpur is a fantastic city with a modern feel to it which i enjoyed visiting for a few days. Everyone was very friendly (which was a recurring theme during my stay in SE Asia) and i would definitely return here again :-)

This was taken from the hotel we stayed in over NYE a few days ago. Just brilliant views of the twin towers and they had a superb fireworks display for NYE in front of the KLCC complex with music and other light shows..
The Petronas Towers were the tallest buildings in the world for six years, until Taipei 101 was completed in 2004

The Petronas Twin Towers were the tallest buildings in the world until Taipei 101 was completed in 2004, as measured to the top of their structural components (spires, but not antennas). Spires are considered integral parts of the architectural design of buildings, to which changes would substantially change the appearance and design of the building, whereas antennas may be added or removed without such consequences.
The Petronas Twin Towers remain the tallest twin buildings in the world. This building was used in one of the main scenes of the Movie "The Entrapment".
The Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) and the World Trade Center towers were each constructed with 110 occupied floors – 22 more than the Petronas Twin Towers’ 88 floors. The Willis Tower and the World Trade Center’s roofs and highest occupied floors substantially exceeded the height of the roof and highest floors of the Petronas Twin Towers. The Willis Tower’s tallest antenna is 11902ft taller than the Petronas Twin Towers’ spires. However, in accordance to CTBUH regulations and guidelines, the antennas of the Willis Tower were not counted as part of its architectural features. The spires on the Petronas Towers are included in the height since they are not antenna masts. Therefore, the Petronas Twin Towers exceed the official height of the Willis Tower by 10 m, but the Willis Tower has more floors and much higher square footage.
I visited Malaysia in 2004 so this is a very old shot which I scanned from the photo.

5XP HDR shot of the Petronas Twin Towers during a rainy night in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Was hesitant to post this at first given the reflected water spots but I guess it adds a slightly different element to an otherwise regular Petronas Tower vertical composition - thoughts?

These towers, which were designed by Cesar Pelli, an Argentine-American architect, were completed in 1998 and became the tallest buildings in the world on the date of completion. The 88-floor towers are constructed largely of reinforced concrete, with a steel and glass facade designed to resemble motifs found in Islamic art, a reflection of Malaysia's Muslim religion. They were built on the site of Kuala Lumpur's race track. Because of the depth of the bedrock, the buildings were built on the world's deepest foundations. The 120-meter foundations were built by Bachy Soletanche, and required massive amounts of concrete.
In an unusual move, a different construction company was hired for each of the towers, and they were made to compete against each other. Eventually the builders of Tower 2, Samsung Constructions (the Construction Division of Samsung Corporation), Kukdong Engineering & Construction (both of South Korea), won the race, despite starting a month behind Tower 1, built by Hazama Corporation, and Tower 1(Hazama Corporation) ran into problems when they discovered the structure was 25 millimeters off from vertical. The shopping mall beneath both towers was constructed by Birmingham, Alabama based Bill Harbert International.
Due to a lack of steel and the huge cost of importing steel, the towers were constructed on a cheaper radical design of super high strength reinforced concrete. High-strength concrete is a material familiar to Asian contractors and twice as effective as steel in sway reduction; however, it makes the building twice as heavy on its foundation than a comparable steel building. Supported by 23-by-23 meter concrete cores and an outer ring of widely-spaced super columns, the towers use a sophisticated structural system that accommodates its slender profile and provides from 1300 to 2000 square metres of column-free office space per floor.
Below the twin towers is Suria KLCC, a popular shopping mall, and Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, the home of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.
Petronas, Malaysia's national oil company, set out to build the world's tallest building. Although other buildings such as the Sears Tower have higher occupied floors, a higher antenna, and a higher roof, the Petronas Twin Towers' spires are classified as architectural details and rise to 452 m (1483 feet), giving it the greatest structural height until Taipei 101. Taking advantage of the rules governing building measurements (counting spires but not antennas) has generated controversy over the towers' claim to the title. However, the tradition of including the spire on top of a building and not including the antenna dates back to the rivalry between the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building.
Other buildings have used spires to increase their height but have always been taller overall to the pinnacle when trying to claim the title. In the aftermath of the controversy, the rules governing official titles were partially overhauled, and a number of buildings re-classified structural antenna as architectural details to boost their height rating (even though nothing was actually done to the building). Since the rules had allowed a building that "looked" shorter to say they were taller, newer buildings have had a focus on getting more than one of the height categories and tried to cater to popular perception rather than technicalities.
