Those who improve with age embrace the power of personal growth and personal achievement and begin to replace youth with wisdom, innocence with understanding, and lack of purpose with self-actualisation ~ Bo Bennett

I just got back from a trip to a very special camp in Maine where I go every summer for retreat/personal growth/dance classes...This was the last year the camp will be held there, and I am sad about that. For my last sunset over the lake there, I wanted to put a little more feeling than a straight shot could get, so I created this impressionist image by using a long exposure and moving the camera. I'd been dancing a lot at the camp, so moving the camera felt appropriate!

Native to volcanic soils of the Oregon Badlands, old growth junipers steadfastly remind us of the old ways. Elder shadows dating back a millennium, keep watch over ancient windblown volcanic ash, each grain comprising of human history.

Whether this is corn on the cob or wheat, it probably links with a harvest, a reward from work done. It also suggests fertility, nourishment and a sense of fullness. In some dreams it may represent sustenance or strength in times of need or trial. Occasionally wordplay for corny.

The seeds of corn also have the power of life and growth in them unless they have been processed, as happens with white rice and white flour, which is thus rendered ‘dead’. They can thus indicate your potential for personal growth, but this usually links with a power within yourself, the power of Life itself, that has the ability to move you and unfold your potential. Day 365!!!! (05.31.2011)

Come know you want to sing it...“Life is just a bowl of cherries, don't take it serious, it's mysterious. Life is just a bowl of cherries, so live and laugh and laugh at love, love a laugh, laugh and love.”

I've really loved doing this 365 project. Not only did it make me reach and try new things, it really helped me open my eyes and see the world in a whole new way. During this past year I've experienced a lot of personal growth (both physically...grrr...and emotionally). I've had some fantastic moments as well as some that felt like my heart was being ripped out. During all of these, it was really nice to be able to "run away" with my camera and almost decompress while trying to figure it all out. Maybe cheaper than a shrink, who knows? But I've really enjoyed it and I thank everyone who gave me encouragement and advice along the way.

Will I do another 365? Soon...I think...but for now I'm not going to take it so seriously and just enjoy taking a photo now and again when the whimsy hits!

Created with fd's Flickr Toys.

Had I gone by the movie critics and the newspaper this morning I would have not gone to the first afternoon showing of the movie FLICKA. It is a FAMILY movie first...and the lush landscape of Wyoming and the horses is so STUNNING!

The movie was not about the novel My Friend Flicka but based on the novel.

If you love horses or love poetic words or characters who have personal growth. Tim McGraw is a wonderful country singer and today he proved his skills in acting. I stayed till all the credits ran out. At the end they show regular photos of girls and their horses and I did not want to leave the theater. The music in the movie is AWESOME too. I left feeling so GOOD and Inspired.

With dedication comes patience, with patience comes growth.

That is what my 365 has brought me: dedication, patience and growth. In three hundred and sixty five days, I have learned how to extend and retract my tripod in lightning speed and use a remote. (Haha, just kidding, I learned so much more than just that, DON’T WORRY.) This year, I learned what dedication truly feels like, what pride in one self means, and I (hopefully!!) learned how to take better photographs.

The reason why this project means so much to me is because I let it become something personal and meaningful to me. I documented all my emotions, days and thoughts in photographs. These photographs are not just frozen times in my life, but memories to me. The changes that I have gone through this year are all captured in these pictures. The relationships I have lost and made with people… each chapter closing and opening can be found in these very photos. This project has allowed people of acquaintance to accept me as someone more than a giggling, blubbering lunatic (or not, right, it’s up to you).

That being said… “people of acquaintance”: Thank you for being here for me. Thank you to everyone who has complimented my work in likes (Facebook), favourites (Flickr) and comments. Thank you to those who have inspired me, encouraged me (especially when I felt like giving up), and given me support. I would not have made it this far without your support- I would have quit. Thank you to those who have loyally followed me on this journey from day one, your sweetness cannot be thanked enough for. And THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO TOLD ME THAT THEY WERE EXPECTING SOME MIND BLOWING LAST DAY PHOTO!! YOU GUYS GAVE ME SO MUCH PRESSURE!! :P (So, I guess I gotta apologize if this photo didn’t meet your standards!! Sorry, guys!!)

I think I got a lot of the serious stuff out of the way… Let’s talk about all stupid behaviour that I have conducted in this project. I cannot count the times that I forgot my memory card in my laptop and went straight out with my memory card- less camera!! Oh man! Or those times that my battery decided to die on me but I was too lazy to charge my spare the night before, so I had no camera at all! Ugh! And all those times that I was shooting in a public area like a park or some open road where cars just kept passing by! ALL THOSE AWKWARD GLANCES AND STARES!! Hahah, today, I was shooting in front of a full tennis court right. I was right in plain view of the tennis players and it was really awkward, but I just kept thinking, “SCREW IT. LAST DAY. I’LL DO WHAT I WANT AND THIS WILL NEVER HAVE TO HAPPEN AGAIN!” And all those times where I had to walk to my location! UGH! My legs are so sore from all the walking that I did today! I went out from 2 PM to 6 PM trying to shoot something decent, but I came home very unsatisfied. So I went at 7:40 PM and came back at 8:20 with my final photo.

So this is what I’ve accomplished in a year. The amount of improvement… I am actually not sure if I got any better or if it was the change of my lens that has really helped haha.

This year has been tedious and hard; with the combination of school, my social life (WAIT WHAT SOCIAL LIFE HAHA) and a huge dedication, I can finally relax! (Ohkay just for a week and then school starts again.) There is no doubt that I am incredibly proud of myself, but this pride would not exist without all of your help.

Lastly, this is certainly not good bye. I will not disappear off the face of this earth. I am planning to start another photography project, perhaps another 365 or maybe a 52 weeks project or just a one month project. I am undecided in that area, but what I have decided is that I am going to do a print giveaway!

I’m not sure if I want to do the print for my outtakes as well, so leave your opinion in the comments below and… I guess I’m finally done.

Is it silly that I feel tears in the corners of my eyes?

at the end of my 40th year, i had some pretty big revelations.

i started 4ONE on my birthday. it's a 365 but i've decided not to post it all, or even post it in order. i've done this project many many times as you may know or remember. i first did it in the late 90s. (there are parts of past projects lingering around in here (the stuff i didn't delete - i get a little delete happy after a project is over...)). but anyway, my point is that every time is different. there's always a different focus, a different purpose, a different Reason i'm doing it.

this time's a lot of things that i can't necessarily put into words yet. the day i started it, i wrote in my journal "the project will become whatever it becomes but i want it to be personal and i want it to express all that i'm dealing with. i want it to be emotional. and like a visual journal. i don't know. we'll see."

THEN i did my solar return chart (as i said, i started this on my birthday). here's part of an interpretation: - "this year is likely to be a turning point in terms of personal growth and understanding. attention is drawn inwards and you are able to get in touch with your deepest needs, feelings and memories. it is a time for contemplation and your are going to need plenty of time on your own. things from the past come to the surface, enabling you to reassess and understand them more fully. you are going to be drawn into experiences which require you to draw on your deepest emotional resources and so discover your inner strength."

When we are close and in touch with our moral instincts, our set of values, be it God or your personal growth what is right and wrong is very clear. Yet as we drift away the lines seem to get unclear and often get blurred. I have recently felt like I have been drifting away from God recently and as a result, I feel my lines have been unclear and often blurry. But we can always come back down the right track and be right with Him again for He always loves us!

Hope you all had a great day!

I did the Warrior Dash last weekend and I've never seen more bruises on my knees and elbows even with ten years of soccer and dance each ever.

Yes I'm still sticking numbers on. I'm shooting the last one tomorrow or Saturday so that I can move forward with a clean conscious and do something new.

Theodore Roethke - In a Dark Time

"... imbalance of heart and heart turns people into addicts. In energy terms, any behaviour motivated by the fear of internal growth qualifies as an addiction. Even behaviour that is usually healthy - exercise or meditation, for instance - can be an addiction if it is used to avoid pain or personal insight. An discipline can become a willful block between our conscious and unconscious minds, saying, "I want guidance, but don't give me any bad news." We even try to direct the very gudiance we are seeking. We end up living in a seemingly endless cycle of mentally wanting change but emotionally fearing chance at every turn."

Caroline Myss - Anatomy of the Spirit

on self growth and acceptance:

i've come to realize that there are flaws in everyone, whether hidden or plainly in sight. we need to accept who we are and who others are. within the past year, i feel as if i have changed the most. i understand more about myself and the world, and not through days sitting in the classroom, but through photography, through music, through flickr, through everything else. there are so many things i want now, so many ideas that float through my mind. somehow, i'm seeing the world differently. i want to create, i want to inspire. i want to write all my thoughts down and keep a collection of memories so that one day i can look back and remember everything i'd gone through. i want to become an artist, i want to draw and paint and create and do whatever i want.

i'm slowly trying to find myself. i'm trying to figure out who i am.

i am growing and everything's changing around me, but that's okay.

i had a strong urge to write something meaningful, something personal. i need to document my thoughts like this more often. xx

dirty laundry - personal matters that could be embarrassing if made public

I love the english language and some of the wonderful expressions and sayings - so naturally this image came to pass. With the incredible growth of social networks such as facebook - an all new phenomenon has occurred, where people discuss their most intimate and private thoughts and actions.

In fact there is just no holding back anymore.

Everyone is doing it. We're not only connecting with old- friends, we acquire new ones and then proceed to share every aspect of our existence.

Now, don't get me wrong, i don't mind a bit of venting and sharing, but really... do we have to show all the cracks in our personas and pray tell - what makes some people think that we want to hear it? In fact it seems that the general public who subscribe to this seem to feast on the 'dishing out' of personal information.

Maybe when we read something that reeks of scandal we feel better about ourselves and our own miserable existence. How else can one justify reality shows (amongst other things)?

Is it just me or am i being old-fashioned? i don't wish to offend anyone, just to understand why this is happening...If you don't want to particpate in my random ramblings then just enjoy this lovely image :)))))!

Life is a remarkable journey that takes us up and down a road of happiness, growth, personal interaction, love, fear and sometimes pain and hardship, which comes with all the good we are blessed with. Everyone has their own journey, yet we all experience the same emotions and struggles that are synonymous with life.

"The agony of breaking through personal limitations is the agony of spiritual growth.

Art, literature, myth and cult, philosophy, and ascetic disciplines are instruments to help the individual past his limiting horizons into spheres of ever-expanding realization.

As he crosses threshold after threshold, conquering dragon after dragon, the stature of the divinity that he summons to his highest wish increases, until it subsumes the cosmos.

Finally, the mind breaks the bounding sphere of the cosmos to a realization transcending all experiences of form - all symbolizations, all divinities: a realization of the ineluctable void."

(From "The Hero With a Thousand Faces" by Joseph Campbell)

positive energy: rebirth/growth/development

There is a local photography competition running at the moment titled "energy". I thought that my "flying photo" which this is based on would be a good entry, but had to reshoot it. I've always wanted to return to this photo anyway, given that it was extremely personal last summer, and is also still one of my personal favourites - so here is the result.

I'll keep you informed as to how the competition goes.

Finally accepting

Finally turning away

Finally looking forward

Finally starting again

Finally removing the reminders

OMG.....I can't believe it. I'm finally done.

Some days were better than others, some days I was thrilled I had to do it, other days I hated that I had to do it but, all in all, I have really enjoyed this project.

I only had one day where I almost quit back in the spring but I'm really glad I didn't. On that day, I decided that I was going to finish no matter WHAT was going on and even if all I could post that day was a stupid picture of me in my car or at work or making a face or whatever, I was going to do it and I was going to finish.

This project was a personal challenge and also something that was for me. I really needed that. As many of you know, I own my own business and let me tell you, I work a lot. I also work with people. I help people all day. I answer calls and emails and talk to customers that come in the front door and sometimes, I don't feel like I do ANYTHING for myself. It was nice to have a project with a personal goal and something I could do for my own personal growth.

I can't even begin to imagine how much I have learned this year and how much I have learned that I NEED TO LEARN! lol

I am truly happy to have done this project AND I am truly happy that it is done. It's time to look to the future, to a new year and to new challenges.

And to all my friends here on Flickr who have offered encouragement and support, even when I posted less than stellar shots...

So, as some of you guys know, I'm no longer an SL photographer, It's was my occupation for so long, but as we humans change, our goals change as well... I have mad respect and admiration for every photographer out there... Being a photographer in SL is hard work, you have to make a mute image speak for itself, tell a story, sell a product, have a soul.

At one point I noticed that I was not being able to express myself through commissioned photography projects, and that resulted in lack of emotion and inspiration to continue my work, so for this particular reason I decided to stop "presenting" myself as a photographer and focused on other personal projects...

But then you meet a specific kind of people, who makes you feel so comfortable around them, and it feels as if you guys met long time ago, they have the power of making everything looks so easy... You admire them enough to express yourself by simply making a portrait of them. For those, my dear dear friends, who are with me, rooting for me and all my achievements, showing support when I am having a bad day, I will Always be here, a friend, a photographer, anything and everything they need.

This pic means a lot for me, because its about personal growth and realization, and I want to congratulate my friend Divos for this amazing Project.

Thanks for being such amazing friend.

They can strengthen your ability to be a loving person, and can enhance your abilities to enjoy life and accomplish the things you want in life. They can amplify INTENTION, reduce stress, help with CENTERING (balancing or calming), strengthen HEALING abilities, and surround you with PROTECTION by amplifying white light. Any healthy quartz crystal point can strengthen these things and help produce personal growth by amplifying the subtle energies that flow inside you. Also blocks all electrical obb's.

This title is pretty fitting for me right now. This summer has been one of the busiest ever. Moving out into my own flat, exams for OU course, photographing a bazillion weddings, and a lot more. It has been fun but it has been pretty stressful. I am really looking forward to the winter and getting back to what I love - personal work, art projects and maybe a few fashion tests.

I am hoping to spend a lot more time on this project and develop it more.

I'm also going to try to be more active on Flickr so we'll see how that goes!

It is truth, given in a real way as never before, that people need, and at the end of the book, all people will know how to be better at life and in life.

The first of many meet-up uploads to come. I am going to be posting in chronological order because I want to share with you the amount of personal growth I felt I experienced in such a short amount of time.

Modelling here is Anna. She was the sweetest person to work with, possessing an infectious laugh and ever-positive outlook on everything. Now excuse me while I continue being an emotional wreck because I miss everyone so much.

Facebook. Formspring.

When I became a contributor to flickr nearly five years ago, I was a newish photographer that was aimlessly trying to find my way around flickr. Making contacts was difficult for me, because I am shy by nature and I did not want to seem rude or forward in any way. My photography was not very good either, but I have improved a little bit over the years.

There were four people that caught my eye right away and I still love their work; Kelsie, Ara, Maryanne and Danielle. Each can tell a story with both the written word and with a single spectacular image. I have had the opportunity to meet up and make photographs with all of them, which has been so awesome. Kelsie, is one of my great hiking partners and I follow her lead into the wilds of the Olympics on a regular basis!

When I wrote my book, these four women played a part in it. They gave me the confidence to undertake a project that I wasn't sure I could complete. As I watched and followed their wonderful work and life adventures, I garnered the inspiration and passion to go for it. I spent many hundreds of hours striving to put together a book----about my life really, and it was fun. I learned a lot about myself. I realized that living a life filled with great undertakings helped me to define the final third of my existence. As a result, I became more grateful for all of the blessings that presented themselves.

So with that, I will continue to indulge my appetite here on the new flickr and I hope my friends will stay around. They have given me so much and I am grateful to know them all. In particular, Danielle remains a fixture and a rock for my own personal growth within the wild world of photography.

I will be staying here and I look forward to seeing my friends continued beautiful work :)

26/52: Long exposure

I'm becoming sort of delinquent with these themes. This is in no way a long exposure, except maybe if you expose yourself to the wilderness long enough, you'll start growing your own personal vines? Not sure if that would be a good thing...

Clearly I'm a big fan of Austrian pine forests.

I've uploaded this at a really stupid time... whatchagonnado.

This skull actually belongs to the art department at my school, but I love it so I asked my art teacher if I could take it home for the weekend, haha. I know that the animal-skull-antler thing has been done to death, but I got the idea for this when I found the small twig that I used for Becky's antlers on a dog walk this week. The story behind it is supposed to be a young child mourning the loss of a parent, and to serve as a reminder of mortality, personal growth and learning to adapt to situations and 'live on'.

It was an excruciatingly tough decision between this and the black and white version which I edited up first and actually really loved. I might do that annoying thing that I do and post it in the comments to torture myself (and you too). It's because I love you.

Oh, and me & Becky gave this shoot the working title of 'Stag do', hahaha.

One of the many amazing waterfalls of the Columbia River Gorge... the place truly feels like paradise sometimes.

Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) I've been beyond busy recently. We bought a house, sold a house, and in two days we are set to witness the arrival of our first born. I'm in the midst of one of those phases where life cranks into supedrive. All that's left to do is hold on and enjoy the ride!

Speaking from experience, these times also tend to be transformational, a time of personal growth and expansion. I can't wait to see what the next several months hold in store!

I've been living more in the moment lately. I try to enjoy everyday and every moment as much as possible. Two years ago I would always think of my past and constantly worry about the future. It left me in limbo. Some growth occurred but it was incremental. These paintings are dedicated to personal growth and individuality. I still have my eye on the future but am willing to flex, bend, and branch out in order to pursue my bliss.

My work has always had a sense of history through the surface. I painted my trees on vintage envelopes which taps into the history element. They measure 8.5" x 13.5". gouache and ink.

PARADISE exists and is personal. The map is within each one of us. It is essential to study hard in order to locate and understand its reading. No one will ever give us this map. Other minds can only help us with our study, because alone, our mind will go nowhere. To be able to reach it, we have to pay the price, passing through storms and deserts. We can choose not to reach it, but the end result is the existence of small islands of joy in the midst of vast oceans of emptiness.

FULL FREEDOM can only be experienced from at the moment we stop harming the Planet where we are and respect the uniqueness of each form of manifested life. It requires breaking from ignorance and developing the highest level of ethics. Live and let live, live together, learn and teach, if it is not possible to live together, move, and if your space is invaded, warn the intruder, if they don't understand, "bite". True freedom only applies to the absolute break from ignorance, including within the heart.

FULL HAPPINESS is only possible when the whole is in equilibrium and harmonized. Without internal harmony and all that surrounds us, happiness is an illusion, just a personal wellbeing confused with happiness and poor durability. There is no formula; each must discover the path, your own formula.

LIFE is the Manifested Universal Intelligence; an indescribable beauty, dynamic, in constant transformation and creation process. We must have unconditional love for life to be within its flow, and thus also to create, build and transform (love unconditionally, regardless of what others think; make it independent of your mistakes and successes in the process of growth).

EVIL-evil does not exist as a source; evil is a product of ignorance.

COSMIC LAWS-The cosmic laws exist; it is not a question of belief but a fact. According to the progress of our evolutionary journey, we are discovering, experiencing and testing each law, to finally reach our free will in harmony with each discovered law; but to achieve perfection, which is the perfect balance in ourselves, each one of us has to discover it in our own way, because we are singular stars. When we get it, we come into beautiful harmonization with the network of life, each of us performing our part for the perfect "functioning" of the cosmic Web, before all that, without exception, LIGHT and DARKNESS, PAIN and LOVE, WILL BE OUR MASTERS with EQUAL INTENSITY, Whether WE LIKE IT OR NOT ...

The HUMAN RACE has not yet become "human", some groups and individuals strive for such intent. We are all beings in construction.

LOVE is the largest and most complete INTELLIGENCE of all universes, realities and dimensions, we are still in the embryonic stage to its understanding.

ETHICS Individually or collectively, is relatively a moral concept not because it is timely or fashionable. (this is moral), Ethics, when well understood, will demonstrate eternal truths about right and wrong (everything that upsets the balance is wrong), so healthy Ethics is a matter of SURVIVAL. Ethics not only cover human issues, but must be present in any dealings with planet Earth, nature and unique, without which no life would be possible, therefore worthy of respect and reverence.

INTELLIGENCE its manifestation means the information accumulated in the brain is known how to be used. The information in the brain is not intelligence itself, such as a computer, the brain is the PC, who uses it and how well it is used will demonstrate the presence of high or low intelligence.

SUPERIOR AND INFERIOR - don't believe in superiority and inferiority, but in Primitivism and evolution. Those who are behind are exactly where we once were; and those who are ahead of us will one day be at our side. Only some go at the speed of a turtle and others are pilots of formula one.

SIMPLICITY- since real simplicity contains all complexity itself, experiencing simplistic living to its fullness is required before assimilating the complexities of life.

JUDGMENT do not judge by appearances, they can be very misleading. It is necessary to see essence, and we are just barely able to see a little of the essence because we do not perceive it in ourselves. We must strive for understanding, this does not imply acceptance. Understanding is crucial and now the Major Challenge is to know how to deal wisely.

TRUTH - The truth indeed LIBERATES, the truth is always beautiful, it is ugly and painful the moment when the illusion is broken, for we live life attributed to an artificial beauty and being artificial, it is not sustainable.

INDEPENDENCE is all an illusion.

When you put a CD to enjoy a sound that gives you pleasure, what happened before you can enjoy this moment of pleasure?

Someone spent the time to write the songs, people manufactured the instruments; others had to get the raw materials to fabricate the instruments that are finally distributed in stores. Various persons invented and perfected apparatus to record music, as well as equipment and accessories with a function to reproduce it and finally, having succeeded in both situations, made distributions to markets. To reiterate, imagine the number of people involved with the whole process of manufacturing and distribution of the CD in your hands that you are about to enjoy!

Now think about each product used in your day-to-day life. Look in any direction and you'll notice a number, sometimes a large number of people involved so that you can reasonably spend your day. You are completely dependent on a large network of human beings and thus have access to basic minimum or even a full life of comfort, luxury and pleasures that money (currently) can provide. It is possible, under favorable conditions, some autonomy is in the environment we live, but do not confuse certain autonomy with independence!

This is not the only network that we are entirely dependent upon. There is a network of nature that keeps us alive, providing all food and all raw materials for consumption of products that we need.

There is also a more subtle network, but just as important as any for a healthy survival, that which is of affection and gratitude of our individual existence, for without it we become sick and unhealthy ...

As such there are many other networks and subnets that sustain us, keeping us alive at various levels, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual essence, as we are an integral part of these networks, fitting in fulfilling our role in the progress of the net / web and when we refuse, this same network / web does not give us back what we need ...

DRUGS - All drugs alter the perception at different levels of reality (including alcohol), working as a pair of scissors cutting through our natural sensor allowing the dark side, that we all have at this stage of evolution, to come to the surface, invariably damaging, often violently, to a greater or lesser degree, ourselves and eventually all that are close to us. Drugs take you for a very long journey, far from yourself. DEEP AWARENESS CAN ONLY EXIST UNDER THE YOKE OF CLARITY.

"Allow walking to occupy a place of stature equal with all the other important activities in your life. Turn your walking into a vehicle for personal growth as well as for fitness. This will add a higher level of integrity and intention to your approach because you will find that it is a way to deepen and upgrade your relationship to your body. Instead of merely giving your legs and a good workout, you'll be practicing to relax more, to breathe better, to expand your vision, to open up your range of motion, to increase your energy, to feel and sense your body. With all of this to look forward to, your walking program will take its place alongside everything in your life you value most, and you'll be amazed at how easy it is to schedule time for something you really love to do."

I am a planner, I like to plan my work week, I like to plan what I am doing, when I am going to do it, and who I am going to do it with. That is not to say i am inflexible, (my wife begs to differ) I just like to plan things out, including my 365 days shots. I had 2 shots in mind today, one I could have done, one I could not due to a few things not happening that had to in order for that to work. So I went for a drive, drove to several locations and since it was Saturday several other people had the same idea, I drove to a neighboring city, nothing. On the way back, one last place I checked had this fountain. Someone else had a similar shot and I really liked it. In her shot she was behind the fountain facing the camera, so to be a little different I am in front, not facing it. Did I mention that it is the end of November in East Tennessee that water was cold, especially in a 5 second exposure.

67 Personal Growth Pitfalls -

I began to have an idea of my life, not as the slow shaping of achievement to fit my preconceived purposes, but as the gradual discovery and growth of a purpose which I did not know.

The Gay Games is the world's largest sporting and cultural event organized by and specifically for LGBT athletes, artists, musicians, and others. It welcomes participants of every sexual orientation and every skill level. Originally called the Gay Olympics, it was started in San Francisco in 1982, as the brainchild of Tom Waddell, whose goals were to promote the spirit of inclusion and participation, as well as the pursuit of personal growth in a sporting event. It retains many similarities with the Olympics, including the Gay Games flame which is lit at the opening ceremony.

The Gay Games is open to all who wish to participate, without regard to sexual orientation. There are no qualifying standards to compete in the Gay Games. It brings together people from all over the world, many from countries where homosexuality remains illegal and hidden.

The Federation of Gay Games (FGG) is the sanctioning body of the Gay Games. From its statement of concept and purpose:

The purpose of the Federation of Gay Games is to foster and augment the self-respect of lesbians and gay men throughout the world and to engender respect and understanding from the nongay world, primarily through an organized international participatory athletic and cultural event held every four years, and commonly known as the Gay Games.

Gay Games VIII were held in Cologne, Germany from July 31 to August 6, 2010.
