This is our temporary connection, but we will soon be fitting this system with what's known as a Brazilian ball pre-filter. It basically intercepts all debris coming off the roof or gutter before it has a chance to enter the cistern. That way we get much cleaner water stored in the cistern, allowing us to use a simple sand filter for use as a source of drinking water. We've fitted the cistern with a hose attachment for watering purposes and also added an overflow valve that will allow all excess water to enter our swales once the cistern has filled.
We got about a centimeter of rain last night, enough to fill the cistern with few gallons of water!
The average home in our climate (ranging anywhere from 800-2000 ft2 with our annual rainfall of ~35") will catch anywhere from 20 to 40 thousand gallons of rain each year!. We're trying to catch and store every last drop...
En bordure de dunes, un petit espace de permaculture a été aménagé afin d'inviter les gens à la pratiquer...c'est un joli petit coin cultivé..malheureusement le temps très capricieux l'a beaucoup abimé.

Penny Livingston Stark of the Regenerative Design Institute in Bolinas, CA devotes herself to sustainable land use principles based on observing and learning from the efficiency and balance inherent in natural systems. The results are increased food production, the conservation of resources, and the re-integration of built environments (farms, homes, even towns) into their natural environment. Information artwork by Douglas Gayeton for the Lexicon of Sustainability project.
Permaculture integrates the benefits of all the natural elements, plants and animals to create sustainable gardens, homes and communities that provide abundance with less work. Created this illustration for a flier. I like it.
