35/100 - I met Pebbles once before briefly but we didn't have much of a chance to talk with her. This time, she had a lot to say. She had another dog the last time, but an eight year old boy "adopted" her. She just knew it was time to let her dog go when she saw how well the dog and the boy got along. She said she will probably end up doing the same with the one she has now, too. Pictured with Pebbles are Mary Jane (the dog), and her two ferrets, which she says found her. She is engaged to Half-Dead, who I also photographed this night.

Very big pebbles, it is difficult to impart a sense of scale to these huge boulders in Red Rock Coulee in Southern Alberta. This fellow is the size of an SUV, worth the trip.

So the Sun has finally hidden itself behind some clouds which makes a welcome break from the relentless summer sunshine we have had recently. This mornings choice of location was easy and only a couple of miles from home. High tide at approx 08:00 and cloudy conditions were perfect for some longer exposures at St Bees Beach.

Basaltic pebbles makeup most of the sediment on the beach at Malarrif, which means "pebble reef" in Icelandic. For centuries the farm at Malarrif was one of the most isolated farms in Iceland. It was the westernmost farm on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and the nearest settlement to it was the fishing village at Hellnar. The lighthouse here had an important role for Icelandic fishermen for decades as they fished in the rich fishing grounds by the shore. Icelanders fish these same grounds for centuries. The lighthouse was built in 1917 and rebuilt in 1947. The height of the lighthouse is 20 meters, and the light had a range of eighteen miles. The farm and lighthouse is now an important tourist center in Snæfellsjökull National Park.
