I saw this the other day at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. This was beautifully (to me) backlit.

Not very Halloweenish (which would be my normal subject matter for this time of year). The pattern reminds me of something. Maybe it's a memory of legos, or of a chunk of fool's gold I found when I was a child. There is just something vaguely familiar I cannot quite put my finger on....

On this cold Spring morning out at Bruneau Dunes State Park, I was sitting comfortably in the sand waiting for what was looking like a wonderful sunrise to happen. Slowly the warm glow of the Sun amplified creating these wonderful shadows and highlights. It's such a cool experience to watch light grow like this. While I was enjoying this moment I started thinking about the individual lines carved into the sand by the relentless wind, which by themselves offer a unique perspective on nature, but it is the individual unique patterns next to each other, leading to the same point, that makes this image so interesting to me. And then I started thinking about applicable life metaphors, but by that time the light had faded, and my fingers were cold, so I packed up and went home.

I always love working with patterns and texture in nature and this fern gave me a great opportunity to do so. The light was soft because it had just rained and it was a fantastic moment to capture some fine details. I didn't hesitate.
A few of the characters from a repeating pattern. I've been working on for quite some time.
This will probably be the last seamless pattern I do unless client requested.
Big thanks to my wife for the knitted background.
