I took this while in the passenger seat of our car. All the birds had been on the ground and as we drew closer something must have spooked them and they all took off at once. I fumbled like a crazy lady for my iPhone. So relieved I caught them before we passed by completely. Phew! :-)

from the passenger's seat heading into Emerald, Queensland, Australia. Emerald has a population of over 17,000 people. The town is elevated and situated on the central district highland and lies on the Nogoa River. The Tropic of Capricorn runs directly through Emerald and hence the town has a very nice tropical climate. Emerald is the major town for a number of industries in agriculture and mining. There is extensive coal mining in Emerald which is a major source of revenue for the town’s economy. Also very big in the agricultural industry is cotton and grain growing. Captured, as always, from the front passenger seat.

Have a great weekend and thanks for visiting.

winter from the passenger seat

Part VI of set Passenger seat {Beautiful Sabah}.

Passenger seat view.... This photo was taken on the way back from Keningau, the largest town in the interior, about 130km from Kota Kinabalu. At this point, we were going up a hill in the middle of some rain. The altitude is probably 1,500 ~ 2,000 feet. The road gets foggy by 2pm, and showers are regular and short.

This area is surrounded by the Crocker Range, the average height of which is 1,800m above sea level (that's right, about 5,400 feet). This is mainly agricultural land... paddy, vegetables, rubber, oil palm and previously, it was a timber town.

My friends, this is the Kadazan-Dusun heartland. You have not seen Sabah until you visit the 'soul' of this land. Welcome to Sabah, 'The Land Below The Wind".

Traditional kadazan dance..... this dance is pure seduction... the rhythmic sound... the twitch of the hips... the flick of the wrists...

Shot from the passenger seat while my wife piloted through the cars. Me going crazy trying to line up a shot that made sense both quality wise and not too abstract...i.e. don't try this at home...:)

it also might lead to divorce...luckily my wife is used to stupid requests like this...

Moose

The moose (North America) or Eurasian elk (Europe) (Alces alces) is the largest extant species in the deer family. Moose are distinguished by the palmate antlers of the males; other members of the family have antlers with a dendritic ("twig-like") configuration. Moose typically inhabit boreal and mixed deciduous forests of the Northern Hemisphere in temperate to subarctic climates. [...].

Currently, most moose are found in Canada, Alaska, Scandinavia and Russia. Their diet consists of both terrestrial and aquatic vegetation. The most common moose predators are wolves, bears, and humans.

Unlike most other deer species, moose are solitary animals and do not form herds. Although generally slow-moving and sedentary, moose can become aggressive and move surprisingly quickly if angered or startled. Their mating season in the autumn can lead to spectacular fights between males competing for a female.
