This Painted Finch stopped just long enough for me to get a single shot, and I got lucky. He's obviously on nest building duty.

This is one of the first colored mounds one sees when you visit Oregon's amazing Painted Hills. A fascinating geological wonder.
The unique colors that streak the clay rich hills and mounds were formed over 35 million years ago by different volcanic eruptions and changing climate patterns. Once this area was a river flood plain with a warm tropical climate and an abundance of plants forming lush forests with exotic animals such as prehistoric horses, elephants, camels and saber tooth tigers roaming freely. Over time the landscape transformed again and again responding to the powerful forces of nature. Layers of ash and different types of soil mixed with minerals and plant material and eroded causing the unique coloring of the Painted Hills landscape we see today.
Many thanks for your visit.
Have a wonderful week!

so quiet here
so hushed and stilled
so silent here
such longing calmed
and tempered here
so quiet here
swirling shades of evening
circling the light
last escaping traces of the day
streak the sky -
paint in water light
blends warm
and breath of breeze
and endless
endless
reaching here
so quiet here
so hushed and stilled
so silent here
winding down
to stopping
gently

It was an overcast afternoon with thunderstorms when I visited the Painted Hills unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. Happily late in the day the sun broke through the storm clouds and illuminated the amazingly colorful badlands there.

Painted Hills State Park is located in the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in central Oregon. The yellows, golds, blacks, and reds of the Painted Hills were formed when the area was an ancient river floodplain... This is a close up of the colors, textures and the painted folds. It was a fascinating place to explore. Thanks for viewing and have a great weekend!
Something a bit different...I have always admired and envied those that had the gifted talent to paint. With PS and plugins, I can at least try my hand at a bit of painting.

The colorful side of the painted turtle is on the bottom so normally you don't see it. Happily this one was basking on a log in a position that exposed some of the bright color.
The male painted bunting is often described as the most beautiful bird in North America. Its colours, dark blue head, green back, red rump, and underparts, make it extremely easy to identify, but it can still be difficult to spot since it often skulks in foliage even when it is singing. The plumage of female and juvenile painted buntings is green and yellow-green, serving as camouflage. Once seen, the adult female is still distinctive, since it is a brighter, truer green than other similar songbirds.
Playing with different settings tonight. Who would have thought an ipod touch could paint such pretty colours! Have to credit my husband with lovely ipod waving skills.
An Australian painted lady, Vanessa kershawi, feeding on the Jervis Bay Grevillea, Grevillea macleayana, at Hyams Beach, Jervis Bay, Australia.
The markings of the Australian painted lady are similar to the Northern Hemisphere painted lady, Vanessa cardui.
Thanks for visiting. I am very grateful for the very kind comments and faves which have been left.

The sky is an amazing thing! The clouds and colours change constantly. Every night is a new painting in the sky!
The main part of the Painted Cliffs on Maria Island. The pattern is formed by ground water rising through the stone and depositing iron then the stone erodes in a certain way to form the patterns. Three HDR images with fore, middle and background focus. Focus stacked in CS6.

Slight crop on the shot previous. A reflection of backlit leaves over gently rippling water gives a painted effect to this image.
Painted Hills is one of the three units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, located in Wheeler County, Oregon. Painted Hills is named after the colorful layers of its hills corresponding to various geological eras, formed when the area was an ancient river floodplain.

This man was standing in a field quietly painting the Grand Teton Range. I wanted to capture him as his stillness when taking in the scene and economy of movement when painting captivated me. He was so precise in all he did. I really like how he blends into the scene so wonderfully ;0)

Today's Carsounds - Tyler Hilton - Missing You
A favorite place to have a cup of coffee and watch morning arrive.
Pyramidal Painted Teepee Peak (7650') stands between the broad shoulders of Never Laughs Mountain and Mt. Sinopah. Pray Lake reflects their glory.
After searching high and low for the painted turtles I heard were in our area, I finally found a small group of them at a lake I drive by all the time, a few minutes from our place. I love how turtles always seem to have an attitude, with their heads held high in the air. There were so many dragonflies around that I couldn't help but capture one in the above image.
Painted Disney Series - Big Thunder Railroad, Magic Kingdom, Walt Disney World
Working on a new series called 'Painted Disney'. Taking images I have captured at Disney and processing them with a 'painted' look. Not sure where I will be going with this but working on the images is a lot of fun.
acrylic painting from photo on flickr. I don't know who's photo it was, but someone sent it to me as I love cats and I painted it. Credit goes to whomever took the photo. Thank you.
