When historic buildings are proposed to be demolished in Over the Rhine, the case is first presented to the Historic Conservation Board (HCB). The HCB makes a determination whether the demolition is appropriate or not (issuing a Certificate of Appropriateness -COA- in cases where it is appropriate).
While most people associate the deteriorating building on the west side of Main Street between Central Parkway and 12th Street with the Davis Furniture Company, the history of the building goes further back than the business' arrival in 1939. Davis Furniture was founded in 1902 and had a store on Sycamore Street until 1931, when they moved to the now-demolished Jefferson Hall at the southwest corner of 12th and Main.
It was a grey, wet, cold day for my Figure class at the Cincinnati Art Academy today. But every cloud has a silver lining, and the grey light and rain on the window led to this shot. Not sure why, but it is one of my favorites. Something out of nothing, perhaps, or finding something good in a crappy day? The buildings you can see are recently painted in bright colors, and this picture would never have worked with the old browns and greys. Some minor photoshopping to bring out the colors of the out of focus buildings, but not very much. Highest position: 21 on Monday, December 18, 2006, Jan 2 2007
The sun settles upon the city of Cincinnati after the first blizzard in years. Offering a different view of the skyline and cityscape, Fairview park has beautiful panoramic views sweeping from Mt. Adams, across Over-The-Rhine and into the hillside of Price Hill. Capture Cincinnati 2008 submission.
Edelmann's Sausage Sign
2111 Kindel Ave.
West Side Over-The-Rhine
Cincinnati, Ohio
What I like about this image is the representation of changing times in Cincinnati. In the early to mid 19th Century Cincinnati was the pork capital of the world, as at times there were more pigs in the street on their way to slaughterhouses than people who lived in the city, hence the nickname, "Porkopolis." Over time Chicago took over the mantle as the worlds leading pork producer but many slaughter houses and pork manufacturers remained. The 1990's things began to change, as the Cincinnati Pork manufacturers began to sell off or shut their doors. Edelmann's, according to some investigation, is still in business in Fairfield, Ohio but the building has been unused for around 10 years and is one of several of the old sausage manufacturing buildings on Cincinnati's west side that has been abandoned and disrepair. I noticed the sign no longer sits upon the building it stood last year. This shot was originally planned to be submitted to the 2008 Capture Cincinnati contest but I just didn't think it was cool enough to submit for folks to vote on, but I do think it's a cool piece of Cincinnati History and abandonment.
Jackson Brewery Lagering Tunnels
Over-The-Rhine, Cincinnati, Ohio
5 Image HDR, shortest exposure 15 seconds, longest 60.
A couple of weekends ago with my photography club Misfits With Cameras we went on another Over-The-Rhine Brewery District Brewery Tour a tour that takes you back in time before Prohibition when Cincinnati was the beer producing king of the world. One of our stops was the Jackson Brewery Lagering tunnels, built over 120 years ago, deep beneith the Clifton hillside this is where the brewery would store it's beer to keep it cool as at the time these were built, mass refrigeration was only in the stages of infancy. Within 20 to 30 years the tunnels became obsolete and they became a storage area or in most cases a place to throw trash and debris. The exact number of tunnels located throughout the city is not determined but several have been found, many of which were discovered after 60 years of not having anyone in them.

This is one of my first shots taken with my new 10-stop ND filter. This allowed me to take a 10 second exposure of the fountains at Washington Park in bright daylight.

When Prohibition was enacted in 1919 many Cincinnati breweries closed down, at that time this brewery was called the Crown Brewery and during the first few years tried to stay in business producing a near beer called "Tang", but it was to no avail as the brewery was forced to close down in 1925. In the coming years the lagering tunnels became a dump as toilets and scrap were thrown down into them since it was cheaper than to have the city come and pick up the garbage. When the lagering tunnels were reopened within the last few years the garbage was so heaped it took months to remove enough to make it passable. Most of the trash that was removed were shattered toilets. The plywood walkway to the left actually sits on 2 feet of broken toilets.
While preparing some images for Brewery District President Steve Hampton I came across a group of images I forgot that I had shot to create panoramic shot of the debris.
Over-the-Rhine. Cincinnati. 2013.
A yet to be gentrified area of the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. One can look down the road from Smitty's shop and see the trendy shops creeping closer and closer. The row of abandoned buildings in the background have even been outfitted with colorful doors and windows painted over the boarded up sections. Walking through the rows of abandoned buildings like this almost gives the feel of being on a Hollywood movie set.
Stephanie working some magic on an OTR rooftop. That's Union Terminal in the background. As you can see, it's quite bright.

...these days, as I sort out the mess inside my head, music is my lifeline and the lyrics supply the words I just don't have.
