Macro shot of a purple orchid

Orchids at the New York Botanical Garden’s 2013 Orchid Show “The Orchid Show” (Bronx, New York)—March 6, 2013.

The 2013 orchid show was designed by Francisca P. Coelho, Vivian and Edward Merrin Vice President for Glasshouses and Exhibitions at the Garden. Coehlho is best known for her plantsmanship and key role in the design and development of high-profile shows in the Conservatory.

Orchids have long been a symbol of love and beauty. Grown by enthusiasts for their sheer elegance and fascination, they're also favored as either a corsage worn on the dress, or as a wristband at many proms and special events. On many occasions, from weddings to conferences, sprays of orchids grace the tables as decoration.

Sideways, in profile.

Cypripedium calceolus is a lady's-slipper orchid.

For nearly four centuries, gardeners and botanists have collected the species to near extinction: as early as 1629 – when the species was first documented by botanists – it was being collected for gardens, and such the uprooting havs continued ever since.

By the second half of the twentieth century, just a single plant survived in a secret site, following the loss of a second population near Leyburn that fell prey to collectors as late as 1956.

Only recently has the species' fortunes in Britain been reversed, following an introduction programme that has planted out cultivated seedlings in as many as 16 sites in a girdle across northern England, from Morecambe Bay to the Durham shores.
