New Orleans. Louisiana

S. Broad & MLK

Central City, New Orleans

Back from New Orleans. One of the more interesting things we did was to go on a boat tour of the swamps outside of New Orleans.

mi fermo, bevo e poi continuo ancora

la notte invita, il ritmo avanza

le giovani ragazze già non vedon l’ora

di confonder le passioni con la danza

città magica di jazz e di follia

vorrei nascerci e mai staccarmi

quel sax suona come fosse poesia

sensazioni che nessun potrà mai darmi.

I stopped, i drink and then continuous still

the night calls, the pace moves on,

the young girls already full but not the time

of confonder passions with the dance

magic city jazz and madness

i nascerci and never get unstuck

that sax sounds as if it were poetry

sensations that no can ever give me.

48" x 50" monotype collage, mixed media on Arches 88 paper mounted on wood, 2009 Private Collection California

The creation of this piece and a few others were an attempt to somehow process and decipher the complex familial, societal and political bearers of racist points of view and the lack of empathy many humans fail to possess. I found the political posturing and recent elections of 2009 have brought greater tension within our country and even my own family. Here I choose to depict a man who by his own birth and heritage he would be held as different. The printed collage elements were created from common plants and weeds from neighborhood and trash from the street. I choose and manipulated such materials for their duality as beautiful and symbolic. I wanted to capture a portrait-like or stoic feel of a figure who is also thrust or tangled within his own environment. As a resident of of the deep south or a region especially mistrustful or judgmental of race. I have had a difficult year grasping such deep-rooted hatred, and lack of respect for humanity or one's fellow citizens. The only thing that I can say on a positive note is that my secondary student's seem to embody greater acceptance and harmony within mixed race environments. I am encouraged by our younger citizens and hope that somehow they can move understanding and acceptance beyond the ugliness of judgment.

This favorite spot of Hemingway, Faulkner and Tennessee Williams’ sits inside the opulent Hotel Monteleone and plays a nasty trick on its drinking clientele: it spins.
