Greta oto is a species of brush-footed butterfly and member of the subfamily Danainae, tribe Ithomiini, and subtribe Godyridina. It is known by the common name glasswing butterfly for its unique transparent wings that allow it to camouflage without extensive coloration. In Spanish speaking regions, it may also be referred to as espejitos, meaning "little mirrors" because of its transparent wings. The butterfly is mainly found in Central and northern regions of South America with sightings as far north as Texas and as far south as Chile. While its wings appear delicate, the butterfly is able to carry up to 40 times its own weight. In addition to its unique wing physiology, the butterfly is known for behaviors such as long migrations and lekking among males. (Wikipedia)

Been in a bit of a funk with my photography recently, not been happy with anything that I've shot and as a result not been taking many photos.

With the weather being glorious and having a day of today I took myself to a local nature reserve to photograph the dragonflies, I wasn't disappointed and will post some of the others over the next day or two.

These are newly sprouted heart flowers on my bleeding heart plant. I actually have a series of images I'm going to post from when they first sprouted to when they're fully grown (I already posted this image with fully grown hearts on Mothers Day that was supposed to be at the end of the was just too perfect for the holiday!)

Please view large :-) Have a great Wednesday, my friends!

"Nymphs feed on sap of tree roots with their piercing-sucking mouthparts. After becoming fully developed, nymphs emerge from the ground at night and climb onto nearby objects such as tree trunk, plants, fences, etc. Adult cicadas emerge from the last nymphal stage leaving behind the exuviae (cast skin). Adults can live 5-6 weeks."

And apparently they're really tasty, too - at least to our dog.

the old toy was quite "used", abused infact, and I've little time to edit the photo with Gimp, but MM is such a fun that I couldn't miss it, So here it goes HMM!

Moray, located in the Sacred Valley of Peru. The current theory is that the large concentric rings created a series of different microclimates. Studies have shown that many of the terraces contain soil that must have been imported from other parts of the region. The temperature at the top of the pits varies from that at the bottom by as much as 15ºC, creating a series of micro-climates that apparently match many of the varied conditions across the Incan empire, leading to the conclusion that the rings were used as a test bed to see what crops could grow where.

A newly hatched dragonfly is unfolding its wings for the first time. It It has just released its cocoon down into the water of the pond. The larva climbs up this shade of grass and after 15 min it begins to move out of the cocoon. It take abut 3-4 hours, during this time the young dragonfly pumps up its body and begins to unfold the wings for the first fly which can take it high to the top of the trees.

A trip to Flanders Moss NNR today proved very fruitful. Lovely stonechats - a new family, Green Hairstreaks, three new hoverfly species (for me), Common Lizards and the first damsels out (Large Red) and a distant Four-spot Chaser

This little fellow attracted my eye in the garden today. I don’t know what sort of Shield Bug he is but I assume his albino appearance is due to his having just emerged from a previous skin which you can see just above and to his right.

This piping plover was literally 1hr old.

If you’re wondering how I got this photo, I was with fish and wildlife personnel. Don’t disturb nesting plovers.

London zoo's butterfly paradise includes a glass cabinet which contains butterfly chrysalis. This butterfly was on the inside of the glass so must have recently left it's chrysalis.

Terrific Thursday to you my friend.

This little great tit was one of several babies. One bird left the nest the previous day and flew over the fence into the garden next door and I did not see it again. This one left the nest the following morning, and dropped down into a pile of rubble in the corner. He just sat there not knowing what to do next. Fortunately the parent bird started calling it and later came back to feed it. I think there were more birds to fledge but I did not see them.
