The Nevada Northern Railway's 107 year old locomotive No. 40 steams past the repair shop with the water and coaling towers in the background. This is a scene that hasn't changed much in the last hundred years.

From the Nevada Northern's winter photo shoot weekend two.
This last weekend I spent two days at the railroad studying and working to pass their safety training. I'm now cleared to start supervised work on train crews. If I stick with it one day it'll be me taking #93 out of the engine house.
Nevada Northern 2-8-0 No. 93 and 4-6-0 No. 40 both exit the enginehouse at East Ely, Nevada, simultaneously on the morning of February 3, 2007, only No. 40 has to stop short for obvious reasons.
Steam and smoke seems to erupt from every surface of Nevada Northern 4-6-0 No. 40 while on Steptoe Creek fill just outside East Ely, Nevada, during sunrise on February 4, 2007.
"I'm just a passenger
on this old freight train
I ride the boxcar
through the night
It doesn't matter
where I might get off
It doesn't matter where I lie."

Nevada Northern Railway ten-wheeler #40 and train on what's left of the original mainline between East Ely and Ruth. This is a small stub between the depot, past the shops and running southwest towards downtown Ely. With the temp outside at 100 degrees, I needed something to remind me of cooler, much cooler times.
RS2 105 sits quietly in the East Ely yard awaiting a call to duty later that afternoon. In the distance, beyond the RIP building, are the faint traces of smoke from 2-8-0 #93 which will soon be headed to the engine house, behind the photographer. The date is February 19, 2016, but it just as well could be February 1966.
For now, one last look at this classy little train on Saturday afternoon, February 20, 2016 leaving Ely and headed out towards Ruth, NV.
Smoke hangs heavy in the air as #93 quietly builds boiler pressure in advance of the day's passenger service.

It's just after dawn on a cold morning in February, and the locomotives of the Nevada Northern Railway are getting ready for work. Pictured here are the four work horses that are currently operable. On the extreme left, SD9 #204, is a transplant from the Southern Pacific Railroad. She's the current yard goat and does most of the heavy lifting when the steam engines are not in use. Next in line is Alco RS-3 #109. She's a native of the NN, and a favorite of some photo charter patrons because....well, because she smokes like a steam engine. The high-stepping Baldwin 10-wheeler #40 is next to the 109. The 40 sees limited use because her running gear is a bit worn and needs some TLC. She runs mostly on the photo shoot weekends, and is the back-up to the 93 on the regular passenger trains. Last in line to the far right is the hefty Alco Consolidation #93. She's a heavy freight locomotive and can haul just about anything the museum might envision putting on a train. the 93 had a major running gear rehab a few years back and is the primary steam engine in the stable.
