Surface water in these parts is in short supply and when it does show up it typically dries up leaving behind a fascinating mosaic pattern of interlocking polygons of mud cracks such as seen here. Note how the polygons tend to form in sets of three mud cracks at 120º to each other. Geology is cool!
This is Nevada Falls in Yosemite National Park in California. It plunges 594 feet (181m). This one one of two falls we saw during a ~10 mile (16 km) hike we took. A beautiful hike that had us gaining about 2000 feet (610 m) elevation, much of it not at all gradual. I love waterfalls and am mesmerized by their power. Loved how the mist was building at the base of this one as the water crashed down.
Built in 1906, the Nevada Northern connected the enormous pit mines at Ruth with the smelter on the old McGill Ranch, and then with the main line at Cobre for an overall run of not quite 150 miles. After considerable repair and restoration, the Nevada Northern began carrying passengers again in 1986.

The wonderful thing about Nevada is there are so few large towns and the nearby military bases keep the planes from mucking up the shot.
Nevada is the second most mountainous state with some as high as 13,000 feet, only Alaska has more, California, Montana and Washington Fall behind Nevada. Being a part of the Great Basin, the valleys are mostly flat or rolling hills and often no lower than 3,000 feet. This photo was taken while out meandering off the pavement in the desert north of Fallon. Data from Wikipedia

The Nevada Desert was so beautiful in the morning. The colors were spectacular with yellows and greens as far as I could see.

We drove through VOF in the summer of 2014. I felt that my photos were uninteresting at the time, and never processed them until now. The day we were there it was a blistering 115 - 120 degrees F; too hot to spend a lot of time scouting for the best composition.
