Would you like to take some good Martian or Lunar pictures? I’m not sending you in space, don’t worry! There is a spectacular place in Romania, at Berca, nearby Buzau, called the Muddy Volcanoes. This is a natural reservation very scarce in vegetation, where the soil is made of dried mud coming out from small volcanoes mouths. The land is soft, but it is possible to walk on it. Yet, in some parts you have the strange sensation that it will collapse and you’ll end up swallowed by the mud.

At first sight, you would think that the volcanoes are hot, but if you have the curiosity to put a finger inside the mud, you’ll be surprised to see that they are cold. If you are more curious and dare to taste the mud, you’ll notice it is salty. The phenomenon is based on the natural gasses eruptions in that area.

As the natural gasses erupt from 3 km deep towards the surface, they push up underground salty water and clay, so that they overflow through the craters of the volcanoes, while the gas emerges as bubbles. The mud dries off at the surface, creating volcano-like, solid, cone-shaped structures.

The expelled mud is cold from the very beginning, as it comes from inside the Earth’s continental crust layers, and not from the mantle. The place stinks a little bit like sulfur, but it is not unbearable, and after a few minutes you won’t even notice the smell anymore. There are no dwellings in the proximity, so the area is very quiet. All you can hear are the birds singing and the blurbs of the small volcanoes.

The reservation is unique in Europe, with similar phenomena being observed in Siberia and Australia. If you consider going to the Muddy Volcanoes, you can do it as one-day trip from Bucharest (it’s a three hours drive).

I took a photo at this same location November 2014. The river's flow was much lower that day. I enjoyed the falls both times! www.flickr.com/photos/123895834@N08/15608311907/in/album-...

In the country, especially, there are such a lot of entertaining things. I can walk over everybody's land, and look at everybody's view, and dabble in everybody's brook; and enjoy it just as much as though I owned the land...”

Snow is gone and left almost muddy brownish greens, covered with fluffy storm clouds. Not my favorite conditions..

I'm trying to find new ways to frame my bird images to make them just a bit unusual from the norm. This young juvy GBH was having a lot of trouble maneuvering the pond and most of the time he was knee high deep in mud...if you look closely you can see the mud ring on his beak.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Thanks for stopping by all comments are welcome, faves and group invites too :))

A rare frost this year, so grabbed 5 mins to take a couple of shots before work.

In explore at #343

This was one of those evenings where there was mist and fog around. I was hoping for a nice clear sunset but it all turned a bit muddy. I suppose on the plus side, it gave some interest in the sky. The sun glowed orange as it set behind a bank of fog. Shot vertical to include some of the blue sky above the fog. 3 bracketed shots taken on a tripod for this. Merged in CS6. You could say this shot has that painterly feel to it.

With 2 big thunderstorms rolling through Yellowstone, the bison's fur is soaked. He is into his knees in mud to get a drink of "water".

sooo . . . about the title . . .

it had been raining and this was one of several shots I took sitting on the ground . . . when I got up, my butt was muddy . . . when hubby uploaded the pix for me, this is the title he used for the folder . . . when it came time to post this pic I couldn't come up with a title . . . 'nuff said . . .

I crave color, so this was my favorite shot of the bunch. What do you think? Were these worth waiting for?
