That autumnal light - so clear, clean, brilliant - marvelous on its own. But when that same light filters through morning haze and fog -- the effects are so sublime and filled with mystery that I am jaw-dropped in awe. I've been able to capture a bit of that light in some of my recent photographs, and I gravitate toward these incredible images and morning moments.
It was just such a photograph that stopped me in my tracks and made me sigh with joy ...
www.flickr.com/photos/xandram/8080575427 . Not only was that special 'light and fog' all part of the image - but she also captured that incredible, dreamlike color that we have yet to see in my part of North Carolina. Xandra so generously permitted me to use her wonderful image as a reference to paint. What inspiration!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH, Xandra. (Please stop by Xandra's photostream for more incredible images!!)
I'll be attending a workshop by Jean Haines this weekend, so I'll be off-line for a while -- what a privilege!!!! Can't wait!
The leaves here are falling fast, and with the potential of Hurricane Sandy to pay us a visit this weekend, that wind and rain will rip even more leaves from the trees -- all before they have had a chance to really reach their typical peak of gold, orange and scarlet.
With such dangerous weather as a potential event for us and the Eastern seaboard of North Carolina, we are keeping our eyes peeled to the forecast and prayers for everyone's safety.
The Arboretum of Tervueren is located in the "Kapbos", a beech forest planted between 1875 and 1880 at the Northeastern edge of the Sonian Forest. It covers an area of approximately 100 hectares and includes some 460 different species of trees (of which 305 leafy trees and 155 conifers). The altitude varies between 80 and 115 meters above sea level.
The Arboretum features the most typical trees from the temperate climate zone of the Northern Hemisphere (with the exception of one group from the Andes).

Rivers…and mornings. Rivers…and evenings. Not just to be near them, but to be in them – like, just about Lingam deep. Water flows around you, pushes at you, warms you, cools you, massages you, soothes you.
It’s what water does. ~ View On Black
Smell that? What is that? Oh, it's nature; not City. Hear that....?
www.youtube.com/watch?v=88yDgm6TFes - Chet Atkins, "Sunrise"
Usually when the sun is coming up, there won’t be many other humans around. Especially on a weekday morning. They’re having coffee, or in the car, or on the train, or the bus – heading for the "jay.ooh.bee."
But, it ain’t like you’re all alone out here - in the water. You have company. Lingering stars, a rising sun, a sky changing colors, clouds coming or going, the moon (in one mood or another) saying goodnight, mammals going on the wee morning’s hunt or coming off the night one, a fish splashing here or there - chasing after some minnows or bugs skittering across the surface.
Then again, maybe they are all just moving because it feels so darn good to be alive.
It is all…so reaffirming; to be out here. You really feel as if you know how our ancestors felt over thousands of years - when waking up wasn’t quite as sure a thing as it is today. When everyone was lucky simply to open their eyes - awakening to the hopes and dreams and dangers of a new day.
Same thing at sunset, except for at twilight, you get to look back and thank your God that you made it through another day safely. (The end of the day is guaranteed. How it ends for any one of us, is not.)
Either way, whether it is come dawn or come sunset, you know that of the thousands you may have seen, no two beginnings or endings were ever quite alike. There is reason to rejoice in that. And, as you are wade in the river, and feel the water flowing around you, and pressing up against you, you also know, that you have never stepped into the same water twice.
Every time you step into a river, see that moon, watch those clouds, breathe in that humid air, twinkle back at the stars, or hear animals rustling about, is a chance to be completely renewed.

This is a painting from my archives ... Folks have asked me if I have an endless 'archive' ... but I assure you, I don't! LOL What a have are a handful of those paintings that I have a love/hate relationship with -- there are days I'll look at something I've painted and decide I should toss it, but I'm not quite 'sure' ... so I hold onto it -- and then there are other days the same painting looks better .... this is one of those.
I remember this particular morning - looking out at my woodlands with streaks of brilliant colors surrounded by the purply dark trees as the sun made its way east - glowing the sky --- then as quickly fading to storm-metal gray ...
Our own thunder storm woke me last night - finally giving us a bit of welcome rain ... yahoo!
The weekend with the grands was fabulous - but oh, we are no longer young. My son and his finance had their 'batchelor/ette' celebrations this weekend too - and when they came to pick up Emily and Nick and our dinner and dishes were completed, we were all ready for a long night's slumber! LOL
Much yet to do before the wedding next weekend. More company and deadlines ....
Hope you have a great week!
Was this morning after a long time again on macro tour in "my" area. Presumably a belated male orange tip bracket on dandelion shortly after sunrise in the lateral backlight.

Keefer Lake, Ontario, Canada - As promised, a photo of the sunrise the day after the one from the previous post. I haven't missed a sunrise for over a week and all of them have been so wonderfully different. I could not quite get the true colour of the sunrise on this one - it was more red, less orange - but my attempts to correct it seemed only to make it look fake. As always, this is not saturated by Photoshop, only by Mother Nature. My apologies for posting so many sunrise photos in a row but they are truly different photographs so hopefully my contacts will forgive me. I will post another photo tomorrow of today's sunrise (if quality warrants) - I'm tempted to call it "The Morning After the Morning After" :)

Another image created last Sunday morning at South Coast Botanic Garden. This shasta daisy's tousled petals were holding on to sparkling droplets left from the early morning watering, and I managed to capture some floral self-portraits in the droplets. Morning walk in the park and noticed a flock of these lovely butterflies hovering over this plant. They sat, just for a second and then again started flying. This kept going, and then i realised, that they were probably attracted by this plants sweet aroma from the budding new leaves. And there were no real flowers for them to suck the nectar from. Poor fellas. So hopping from one leaf to another, hoping and questioning , " Where is the nectar ! " :)

If every morning,
You can find a reason to say,
"Yes, it's going to be a beautiful day."
And every day, you find a reason to say,
"Yes, it is a beautiful day."
And every night, you find a reason to say,
"Yes, it was a beautiful day."
Then one day,
You'll look back and say,
"Yes...it was a beautiful life."

Oxbow never looks the same. Though it is always identifiable it is always varied. This was a stormy early morning shot. Wish you could see it at 6000 pixels ... even the tiny ducks are clear.

Nice morning, good little cold snap, -5ºc, hope it's the start of a very long, cold winter.
Took this as a snapshot with a Nikon D90, also shot one with a Rolleiflex on 120 film.
Nice little knock on effect of shooting film is that i only take one or two shots with the digi instead of the 10 I would have taken before.
Toured around this am to a few spots i wanted to look at.
Will see what turns out when i get the film developed.
"Generations of visitors to Yoho National Park have regarded the alpine splendour of the Lake O'Hara area with deep reverence. Here are amassed the bubbling brooks, vibrant mosses, vast rock amphitheaters of snow, cloud and light that have inspired the works of scores of humbled artists, chief among them the luminaries of Canada's renowned Group of Seven."(from www.field.ca)
I took a break here after the sweat-soaking ---11 km, 450 m elevation gain--- walk up the fire road to the lake before hiking to the alpine zone. In the end it was worth it, though my tired feet and ankles may not agree.
