One of the best things about visiting RAF Coningsby is the diversity of aircraft that you can see. Here is 6 pictures of the BBMF's Chipmunk being used to train this years latest fighter pilot. Squadron Leader Mark ‘Disco’ Discombe was at the controls being supervised by Squadron Leader Andy "Milli" Millikin. "Disco" will be the flights O/C in 2018 taking over from "Milli" when he takes over at the end of this year. I would also like to add that in no way was this pass dangerous as they were practicing an engine failure on take off.

XL426 in the RAF

XL426 is a B2 Vulcan and was the 44th of the 88 Vulcan B2s built. In common with all other Vulcans, she was constructed by A V Roe & Co. at its Chadderton, and Woodford plants, and made her first flight, lasting 95 minutes, from Woodford on August 23rd, 1962. After four further test flights, XL426 was collected by an RAF crew and entered service with 83 Squadron at RAF Scampton on September 13th, 1962.

XL426 made her final flight from RAF Scampton to Southend Airport on December 19th, 1986, in the hands of Squadron Leader Paul Millikin (captain); Squadron Leader Neil McDougall (co-pilot); Squadron Leader Ken Denman (air electronics officer); Squadron Leader Dave Moore (navigator radar), and; Squadron Leader Ray Leach (navigator plotter). Chief Tech Dave Thorpe (crew chief) was also on board for the flight.

He had carried out 176 sorties against the enemy, 107 being over enemy territory and 23 at night. He had to his credit 3 ME-109s destroyed and 1 damaged whilst flying from England and 3 Japanese Navy Val Type 99s destroyed over Ceylon.

Stacey Pierson,《Blue and White for China. Porcelain Treasures in the Percival David Collection》,倫敦,2004年,圖版20;T.
