Another "dirt bird" as in common as dirt, but still they have some wonderful colors to show.

Male Chaffinch at Daisy Nook, looking very proud

The belted kingfisher is one of the most widespread land birds in North America, occupying a diverse range of aquatic habitats. One of few bird species in which the female is more brightly colored than the male, in addition to the ashy-blue upper parts, white collar and broad, bluish-grey breast band, the female belted kingfisher has a chestnut band across the lower breast and streaks of chestnut on the sides. However, perhaps the most distinctive feature of this bird is its conspicuous, double-pointed crest set upon the large, blue head. The juvenile differs from the adult in its darker crest, blue breast band mixed with chestnut and wing feathers flecked with white . Like other members of the kingfisher family, this medium-sized species is short-necked, stout-bodied and has small, weak feet. The bill is straight, long and strong and flattened from the sides - an adaptation to its fish-eating lifestyle . An extremely vocal species, the belted kingfisher makes a number of sounds, including a harsh rattle, which is used in territorial disputes and a warbling call emitted by the female during courtship.

The Rufous Hummingbird migration has started. We will see these colorful little jewels over the course of the next several weeks temporarily resting in our area as they make their way North. Both the male and female Rufous are a very fesity lot! Their tiny size belies their bullied determination to claim and defend the feeders from other hummingbirds with amazing aerial tactics. This male Rufous played hide-and-seek with me for most of the evening before I was finally able to capture this shot.

Bluebird (disambiguation) A bluebird is one of several species in the songbird genus Sialia. Bluebird or blue bird may also refer to: Bluebird of happiness, or Fairy-bluebird. They have blue, or blue and rose beige, plumage. Female birds are less brightly colored than males, although color patterns are similar and there is no noticeable difference in size between the two sexes.

A male emperor dragonfly seen this morning in a clearing at Coopers Hill Wood, near Brockworth in Gloucestershire. A number of flickr members, particularly those residing in the county of Gloucestershire will be familiar with the name Coopers Hill. This is where the cheese rolling takes place on the 2nd May Day Bank Holiday every year.

Male fiddlers are easy to identify by their enlarged fiddler claws, which they wave or saw back and forth in a "fiddling" motion–not to fight predators, but to attract mates and discourage rivals.

The dad of the Stonechat family that have recently appeared up on the moors. He's a handsome little bird and very protective of his two youngsters. He never stopped his delightful chit -chat.

About an hour after we spotted the female Sooty Grouse, we were lucky to find this male strutting his stuff about 100 yards away. We didn't see them "get together", but it's probably a safe bet that they did. Taken in Olympic National Park, Washington.

Male Stonechat, singing away to a nearby female, she was far too shy to come into clear view for a picture unfortunately.

I was trying to photograph another bird when this male goldfinch in breeding plumage flew up and landed on a rock nearby. Sometimes the models are very cooperative.
