We had a cloudy day yesterday with a few showers, as the sun was starting to set last night it looked like it was going to maybe pop out for a bit, so the pup and I hopped in the truck and went for a little drive. As I got closer to the lake I could see this starting to develope so we thought we better stop for a try. Have to admit ma nature truly blessed me with a fantastic sight.

Hope you all had a great long weekend, except those of you south of the 49th, I guess your long weekend is the one coming up

I do think you'll like this one better when you hit "L"

"Sometimes it's the air, sometimes it's the smell.

Sometimes it's the sound of water, sometimes it's the stillness.

It's tapping into the transcendent, and teaching your heart to see it,

and making your eyes and hands express it that creates transcendent paintings. "

If you have a moment, I hope you'll view this on black, which is available above....

Our garden was filled with goodies this day of Thanksgiving...so I give thanks to

Ma Nature for it all.

Cherry blossombranch, with Luck for everyone at holy night :-S.

This textured background worked so well with JJ, I thought I'd try it on these little bulldog pups. Cropped the texture and added some florabella actions to blend the seven week old pups in. Also lightened the background to make it glow more. By the way, the puppies were only in that basket for about 30 seconds. So don't worry about them being smushed. =))

Haven't been around much lately, but everythinngs going good, Ma Nature hasn;t been cooperating much weather wise in that it's been to warm and nice, unfortunately that has left most of our landscape kind of bare and blah looking. So when we saw this forming tonight the Pup really was excited to head out and try for it. If you we;re to stand up from where I shot this you would see what I mean.

Any how it was nice to have a break from the camera, but I sure did miss it and all of you.

Yeah, I know the rule about your own shadow in the image. Rules are made to be smashed sometimes. (smile)

PLEASE VIEW LARGE AS WELL, THANKS.

Jim

In close communion with the real nature, i always try to capture the reality of what i see… after what i put a bridge over the river to create... as the Nature do... photography is definitively a philosophical art for me…!!!

Found these jewels this morning near our retaining wall at street-level.

EXPLORE, #237, 02-08-09

One from yesterday Morning, after having a storm come through Monday-Tuesdays Dumping about 16" of snow, ma nature decided she would throw some spring weather at us.

So the Pup said we better head out and see what was happening.

I really wanted to get closer to the ice in the middle, but wasn't going to risk breaking through the ice again, especially when it's more than waist deep out there.

Pup say's the light was neat enough that you should hit "L".

We're off to the city today so will catch up with you all later

Ma Nature's palette and artwork always amazes me!

One of the surest local signs of spring, fawn lilies bloom along the river trails here every year around Easter. Most are pink, with the occasional white one mixed in. As part of Ma Nature's brilliance, the lilies grow up then hang down, so the petals protect the center and the precious pollen from the wild rain storms this time of year. When I walked the trail where these were yesterday, the early trilliums, proudly straight up and down, where all mud spattered from the Good Friday gale and monsoon. Happy Easter, everyone, and here's wishing you a wonderful spring. Spring has always been my favourite time of year.

Caught in the middle of a yawn. Or perhaps laughing at an inside joke.

Explore # 483, 470, 473 7/8/13 this was added to Explore for July 8 on July 10 after my pic for July 9 was dropped -- 2 days after upload. Explore is usually for the prior day, not 2 days prior. that Donkey is an odd one!!

Another awesome painting by Ma Nature.

For those who haven't seen them do it, Eagles can swim, and quite well. An adult eagle can only lift about four or five pounds, so if they hit a fish too big to lift, they swim to shore with it. Basically, they flop forward on their stomachs, and do a breast stroke with their wings, arching their neck so the head is well above the water. There's an urban legend around that if an eagle hits too big a fish, it will be dragged underwater and drowned, as it cannot release it's grip. That's incorrect, Ma Nature's a better designer than that. I saw this eagle swimming, but couldn't get near the water until he reached the beach.

A quick shot from last night when all of a sudden ma nature decided to make life a bit more interesting. The Pup and I just had enough time to run out and get this before having to go out to a meeting.

We hope your all having a great week.

Pup thinks it's worth hitting "L" for this one

Ma Nature is gonna throw all the winter tricks at us in the next 3 days...rain, sleet, snow, freezing rain... oh yeah, cold and wind!

Just how I like it in December!

One more shot from last weekend at the crick, this was the first shot of the mornin. You folks are probably getting sick of this crick, but I like this place especially when ma nature doesn;t give me a lot to shot at. With this dry warm fall we've had hardly any sunrise/sets compared to normal and our fall color was very short lived this year thanks to the winds.

But the crick always seems to come through with a shot or too no matter what the weather or mood in the atmosphere, fortunately she blessed us with a couple of minutes of colorful light

Hope you enjoy and all have a great weekend

Ya know what the Pup thinks ("L")

This shot was taken the other night a few minutes after my previous shot, although it was looking the other the direction,Ma Nature was tricking me that night with where the sky was lighting up

Hope you all have a great weekend

Pup say's ya really aught ta hit "L" on this one

Yesterday's fog-drizzle brought me many treasures from Ma Nature.

My fairwell shot from this trip to Drumheller, while for the most part we had noting but hot days and clear skies, when ma nature decided to give us something she was real kind,

We had a real cloudy windy evening until just before sunset, when I saw the sky start to break, Jan the Pup and I went out for a quick drive and got this farewell scene since we;re leaving in the morning.

We hope your all havin a great weekend.

Jan and the Pup think it;s worth hittin "L"

I straightened the horizon but it's otherwise unaltered. Ma Nature can just knock my socks off sometimes.

Back in the old neighborhood.

More work needs to be done up in those hills, Ma Nature.

Can only work with what Ma Nature gives us. Unfortunately what you see in this shot is how it's been since late Saturday. So this is the best I can do this week.

I just hope I can get back there in the right conditions before the snow melts and try again,

Large on Black do bring it to life a bit more

We had a day of drizzle earlier in the week, and you know I HAD to check out the gifts from Ma Nature. Heirloom Rose blooming (a 3rd time), petals with drizzle drops. My latest most favorite.

One more from Jan the pup and my walk-a-bout yesterday. Thought this old tree was pretty neat and could just imagine all that ma nature has thrown at her yet she's still kind of standing proudly on her own and has healed enough to keep on growing, Did this in mono cause it really does allow it to stand out so much better

Hope your having a great sunday

Some explanation would serve.

I'm completely convinced that Mother Nature loves nature photographers. It may not always show, and sometimes the answer is 'not today', but Ma Nature does feel the love.

Many are the days when I go out to photograph, and find very little. Sound familiar? However, on so very many of those days, as I'm hiking out of the area, reconciled to having few results, something wonderful and unexpected will appear.

So it was today. The hike into and through the woods was 95% exercise, with a couple of so-so photos. I was on the trail out of the woods, literally half a minute from being done, when a big bird flew over me from behind.

It landed well up in a tree, directly above a place where several families of Canada Geese were eating spilled corn. Clearly it was trying to choose from the smorgasbord below.

I started snapping right away, from a distance. Shoot a few, move several steps closer, shoot a few...etc. I got close enough that it scared the geese away, and then the hawk flew off. I watched, and it landed on the top of a pole nearby, in the railroad yard.

THIS is the teaser photo. It would stand alone, but there are better to come. I think this may be the Red Tail Morph I showed some days ago...about two miles from where this was shot.

Because the question came up, I will repeat again: The hawk is a Krider's Morph juvenile Red-Tailed Hawk, hence the almost completely white chest.

DISCLAIMER: my nature and wildlife photos are shot in the wild, handheld, while hiking. No blinds, no tripods, no remote triggers. When I can see my subjects, they can see and hear me!

Messing with Ma Nature

The Virgin River cuts through Zion Canyon like it has done for ages and ages. Humans only arrived on the scene here around 8000 years ago. By then Ma Nature had a good handle on things.

Zion Canyon can be a tricky place for photographs. The steep canyon walls alternately allowed for bright sunshine and areas of deep shadows. It can be quite difficult to reconcile the two, especially during early morning and late afternoon/evening.

A look that everyone and everything is wearing these past few days.

A severe system that has stalled over the eastern portion of North America has brought unprecedented rainfall. Many areas are experiencing severe flooding.

My sump pumps are in full song; something that is normally reserved for the Spring thaw.

While humans (or most of us…I feel for those in the flooded areas) can seek shelter; the indigenous wildlife are collectively "enjoying" unsolicited showers, compliments of Ma Nature!

This poor Chickadee is definitely not looking too happy in its "wet look".

After Spending 3 hours on the Lawn Mower tonight, and having had 10" of rain in the past month, ma nature decided to bring in Summer with the nicest day of the year and she said good night in a grand old way.

This shot was taken looking to the east

The pup and I had to run out to catch this one when we saw it developing.

The pups says ya aught ta hit "L" too

I've seen many a suburban home with a rock garden that has been professionally landscaped to provide a natural look. This rock garden however, has been sculpted by the greatest landscape artist of all--good ole Ma Nature--and it didn't cost a single penny.

These fences are supposed to help "control" beach erosion. Not so much. Where the end of the fence falls away there is about a 15 foot drop to the "new" beach. Tons of sand were washed away in the blizzard/hurricane. Ma Nature always wins.

Mt. Hood viewed from Trillium Lake. Good grief, we *drove* down to the lake. That should not be possible at this time of year. There was a thin sheen of ice on the lake, but in the sun it was very warm. And Mt. Hood looks naked. There is no snow at pass level. We need snow. Mt. Hood is, well, naked.

The shadows breaking up the reflection are the remnants of an old tree stump. A new tree is trying to grow out of the stump. If you look closely you can see the tree and the reflection.

Hmmm, interesting .jpeg compression artifacts in the large version. They are not there on the original file.

UPDATE 12/8/2008: Looks like Ma Nature will help the situation out this weekend with snow levels at 2000 feet on Friday, 500 feet on Saturday (I live at 500 feet) and 200 feet (essentially the valley floor) on Sunday. All of that translated to good snow in the mountains. I hope it just keeps coming. I want to be on skis right after Christmas.)

Good night, winter!

Well, it's not officially over until next week, but tell that to Ma Nature. We'll have 60s and 70s (16-23 C) all week!

I thought the sun was going to set quietly last night, but at the last second, it created this.

A crop from an image taken on a very bright afternoon. I was dispairing of finding any colour under the sun, then saw these leaves, lit from the back, glowing in the shadows. Except for a crop and a bit of tweaking, this jumped out of the camera this way. Always a happy surprise. BTW: This are Spring colours; the red is from the new leaves; budding red and turning green as they mature. Ma Nature has colour harmony in her cycle of life.

Shot at 300mm, handheld. I only got away with that with a super-fast shutter speed.

I love this On Black
