Day 162 - Between the Lines

It was rainging again today, so I couldn't do the outdoor shoot I had planned, but i think this turned out nice, even though it's books again... I like books.

A small selection of my collection of vintage and antique glass bottles — I love the way old glass catches the light as the tiny imperfections from both manufacturing and age cause a myriad of tiny scintillating reflections.

Macro Mondays #LineSymmetry

Size of the frame: 3,4 x 3,4 cm / 1,3 x 1,3 inches

Slightly weathered, damaged top of the spine of an antiquarian book (one volume of six of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's oevre), printed and published in 1899 in Leipzig. The dainty art nouveau pattern on the book's spine is actually golden, but for better contrast against the brown leather bound back of the book I've applied an orange / brown tinting for which I started with ON1's LR presets, but still tweaked the settings in LR.

A Happy Macro Monday, Everyone!

The Japanese Flowering Quince (Chaenomeles japonica) has been flowering its little head off since December now, and is showing no sign of stopping. I love its elegant form and the colour tones beautifully with the turquoise glass and deep brown leather.

The power of the written word has no bounds.

Boarding the bible train at Beverley Minster, E.Yorkshire

This is a collection of the keepsakes from my grandfather that just passed. I've been curious about setting up a looking down "table top" kind of view for a while and thought this would be a good one to put together.

For this I set up several old fence boards in the pattern and direction and wanted, and then set up everything on top.

The Victorian oil lamp provides a much stronger light source than a candle (about 60x more light) so it provides the main light source for the scene. The Curtain’s lit with a hand-held flash unit bounced from a white board.

"the well of lost plots. to understand the well you have to have an idea of the layout of the great library. the library is where all published fiction is stored so it can be read by the readers in the outland; there are twenty-six floors, one for each letter of the alphabet. the library is constructed in the layout of a cross with the four corridors radiating from the central point. on all the walls, end after end, shelf after shelf, are books. hundreds, thousands, millions of books. hardbacks, paperbacks, leatherbound, everything. but the similarity of these books to the copies we read back home is no more than the similarity a photograph has to its subject; these books are alive.

"beneath the great libary are twenty-six floors of dingy yet industrious subbasements known as the well of lost plots. this is where books are constructed, honed and polished in readiness for a place in the library above - if they make it that far. the failure rate is high. unpublished books outnumber published by an estimated eight to one."

-thursday next, the jurisfiction chronicles

~ so begins jasper fforde's novel, the well of lost plots, the book that will accompany me tomorrow on a journey into the forest, and to the river. thursday next is a great companion for these journeys...

or at least a little bit of it.

Dark, warm tones this week — quite tricky when it's a bright sunny day! Not an easy composition to great right — the tall candelabra and low-down (but massive) bible didn't want to both fit in the frame.

sketchbooks kept from february 12, 2006 to today. some journals i fill very fast, others i take my time, however, i've been writing [and usually sketching/painting] every day since december 14, 2006. journaling keeps me sane, it's one of the few constants in my life.

London, England, 1792 and disgraced former adviser to King George III, Thomas Stewart, is on the run. Knowing he has only hours before the authorities catch up with him, he unlocks the door to his secret workshop and attempts to complete the Great Experiment. The dream: to create the 'Philosopher's Stone', an alchemical device so powerful it can transmute base elements into pure gold... The hypothosis: that the right combination of light, focused through a crystal sphere, onto a receptive mineral specimen would yield untold power and riches. The problem: someone had been talking, and the authorities wanted the power for themselves. The solution: flight, hopefully taking the finished Stone with him, but had The Experiment worked? Would he be able to get away? Where would he go? ................................................. Composing this shot was almost as hard as making a Philosopher's Stone!! An awful lot of work has gone into preparing the little potion bottles, and into getting the lighting and composition right. I've been planning this, on and off, for a few months — I have some ideas around related subjects...#narrative #stilllife #still_life #leatherbound #antiquarian #crystalball #alchemy #alchemist #fiftyshadesoforange #orangewednesday #oxfordshire #uk #most_deserving #photowall #all_shots #uk_photooftheday #icatching #bd #markmakingdesign #philosophersstone #sorcerersstone

"My soul would be an outlaw"

Just a quick and dirty profile picture. Still not really in SL much right now. Killing a bit of time before work. Hi. Hope everyone's well. Be back more once it's too cold to be outside.

As per usual.

Fresh flowers, fresh coffee and some old leatherbound books to read — a perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon

More traditional still life and surprisingly difficult to construct — too much light, from the candles, was causing exposure issues. Shot 2 exposures, 1 for the flames and 1 for the ambient & combined in Pixelmator.

Going for a gothic-magical look here, the moon effect is shot 'in-camera', not Photoshopped in later! Shot with a Canon 60D, Sigma 50mm F1.4 Lens, taken at 4/5 sec exposure, F6.3, ISO 320.

a set of old books with decorated edges, in the market

I love the look of old maps, charts and documents — they were produced with so much more artistry and love than their modern counterparts. Cartography has become a highly technical, standardised and accurate science but has lost the romance and mystery of the maps of old — here be dragons!

Back to a more traditional still life today — lots of rich tones with hints of the spice trade of old.

I love the barnes & nobles leatherbound classics! I want to collect them all! ♥

I always carry notesbooks around. Sometimes ridiculously many. Here's my current stack consisting of two Moleskine pocket format books (one for writing, one for doodling), one cahier Moleskine for various and one medieval style leatherbound tome (which is reserved for undefined special scribbles).

I know, I am a total notebook/journal geek.

The perfect way to unwind after a busy day, a nice fresh cup of coffee and some lovely chocolates.

Warm, rich tones this week with a colour palette limited to reds and golds with a tiny bit of green from the rose leaves.

I have recently began the project of documenting all my belongings by drawing small ink renderings of them. You might call it somewhat ambitious. I thought I’d draw them all in a book, or maybe a few books, so I chose a leatherbound one that I had made in a summer class taught by Tiina Piisang in 2012 as a fine binding practise.

I have now drawn four pages of ink bottles and ink pen nibs, and one page of watercolours and various glues and lacquers..
