A ladderback woodpecker right outside my house waiting for the bird feeder. Nature is everywhere.
It must have been after the mealworms in the suet. Taken out the window into the backyard.
A man tips back his chair, all evening.
Years later, the ladder of small indentations
still marks the floor. Walking across it, then stopping.
Rarely are what is spoken and what is meant the same.
Mostly the mouth says one thing, the thighs and knees
say another, the floor hears a third.
Yet within us,
objects and longings are not different.
They twist on the stem of the heart, like ripening grapes.
--Jane Hirshfield, "Ladder"
Took this through the kitchen window. It wouldn't have stayed if I'd opened the door. Every now and then the woodpeckers visit the hummingbird feeder looking for a little treat. You can imagine how upset this makes the hummers. They get so upset when someone invades their food source. Each hummer thinks he owns the food exclusively so they fight constantly. I tried two feeders, didn't make a difference they just fought more, so I will use one and let them fight it out. This is a Ladderback Woodpecker.
I could hear this little bird drumming on the Ponderosa Pine tree in my backyard.
Black et al. (Taken out the back door)
It amazes me how these birds can get their tongue in that little hole. But where there's a will there's a way and these little birds come to feed every morning now. This is the baby and it might not be too good at pecking the wood on trees just yet.
oops! forgot one! - male ladderback woodpecker who just finished feeding babies hiding in hole nest

We found this king-sized ladderback rocking chair at a craft center in Berea, Kentucky. If you can find me, I'm in there for scale. Click "all sizes."
They had some high-quality crafts for sale, but the chair was only a display.

Harewood, the home of Samuel Washington, George's brother, still a private home in the Washington family. A ladderback rocker by the fireplace in the kitchen.
From Bill Forbes' Pond at Elephant Head near Amado Arizona.
With his crest up, this Ladder-backed Woodpecker reminds me of the Food Network's Guy Fieri...
