My 6yr old daughter as taken by my 9yr old daughter. Levels tweaked by myself in lightroom.

You don't always want to know about the dream that woke them up.

The best photo from my first set of learning to shoot as a Strobist.

Strobist info: Vivitar 285HV shot through a 43" Westcot Optical White Satin Collapsible Umbrella on camera right; flash set to 1/2 power and wide; umbrella was ~8-12 inches away from Chloe's face; my four year old held a not-so-reflective white card ~18 inches off of Chloe's right shoulder as best she could.

Take one barely cooperative 11-year-old, march him into family room and tell him to "stick around" for "just a minute," and you have all the ingredients for an exercise in quick set-up and shoot.

Total time for this shot, from wrangling youngster to setting up two stands, two strobes and one umbrella: 4 minutes.

Strobist info: 580EX 1/8 power into Wescott collapsible 'soft silver' umbrella set at 45 degree angle to subject and camera left. Second strobe, SB-26, to camera right, 1/4 power and fitted with homemade grid snoot, aimed at background to create separation.

Time hack: 2 minutes to set-up both strobes on light stands and fit each with modifier (brolly and grid snoot) and fit each with Pocket Wizard.

Thirty seconds to fire off three test shots to nail down exposure and placement of background strobe.

One minute, 30 seconds to fire off six shots; adjusting pose of "model" each time. Tried to center subject's head in center of background spot... missed it by "that much," before subject bolted...

Went to a local park in Thousand Oaks to take head shots for 3 young kids for theater. They need some smiling and some with anger. They all did very well and were fun and easy to shoot

Flash is liberating to the extent it makes shutter speed irrelevant, which in turn makes manual the best setting.

how long can you look at this photo, just waiting for him to complete his turn around
