Zurenborg is the name of a district, consisting of a few streets in the Antwerp suburb of Berchem. The district is situated near the railway station of Berchem. What you can see here is absolutely unique in Belgium, or perhaps in Europe. An incredible mixture of architectural styles unfolds itself before the eyes of the visitor. Nowhere else can such a panoply of neo-styles be admired The district is not really very large, so the best way to visit it is by taking a stroll through the different streets. In Belgium the district is also sometimes referred to as the '"COGELS-OSY" lei, which is the name of its main street.

The multitude of architectural styles and decorations is breathtaking. One can find a house in neo-gothic style standing right next to a house in Art Nouveau style (a.k.a JUGENDSTIL). Art Nouveau in Belgium it was perfected by the architect Victor Horta. Some of the most beautiful art nouveau constructions in Belgium are the houses of Horta in Brussels. But, whereas Victor Horta created an entirely new house-concept, the art nouveau decorations in the Zurenborg district in Antwerp were only there to impress the passers-by.

The Volksbad in Nürnberg, a beautiful Place for architecture Photos! This is a panorama where I used a DRI technique to get a better dynamic range. I'm currently writing a tutorial at blog.mibreit-photo.com on how to do this. This technique also suites landscape images very well.

But back to this image. I used the Nodal Ninja 5L to get good aligned shots: 2 rows, 3 settings each and 3 exposures for each setting -> 18 shots .

Hugin was the tool I used for the Panorama. It's an open source tool which works very well for the blending but the algorithm for finding control points is not so good for shots as above. So take some time and do it yourself or at least you have to cleanup 30% of the points the algorithm found. There PT-Gui is much better but not for free.

cheers

I am back now, I'll be seeing you.

A detail of the magnificently-decorated entrance to the Volksbank (peoples' bank) in Darmstadt, Germany. A great combination of the spirits of the Gründerzeit (the founders' epoch) and Jugendstil (art nouveau), which is firmly rooted in Darmstadt. The bank was built/designed by the Darmstadt architect Carl Friedrich Rückert and was finished in1892. Where's the frog?

A mansion of labour

At first sight palatial redbrick facades and artistically adorned gables on buildings dotted around a grassy square are more reminiscent of an aristocratic residence than a coal mine. This was exactly one of the ideas behind the architecture.

Today the “mansion of labour” in the west of Dortmund is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and impressive testimonies to Germany’s industrial history. The engine house with its famous Jugendstil doorway is already an icon. But the museum’s outstanding industrial architecture is only one of many different attractive facets. The various sections of the exhibition will take you into a world of harsh working conditions, and the stories of the men and women who worked in coalmining during the 20th century will bring this vividly to life.

Rhijngeest is a former hospital for the mentally insane ("People who suffered a nervous condition" as was said at the time).

It was supposed to look like a "Swiss summer hotel" and was built in 1903.

Later it became known as the Jelgersmakliniek.

From 1998 on the town archives are located in this building.

Huize Tavenier in glorious Jugendstil/Art Nouveau-style, built for Jacomijna Hooites-Meursing as a private mansion in 1905, by the local Groningen architect A.Th. van Elmpt.

Original Name was Villa Vredenrust, but renamed Huize Tavenier when it served as protestant-christian hospital (Diaconessenhuis) from 1949 to 1981.

Another very long exposure: 60 seconds at f7.1 at 400 iso, normally quite hard to discern this stunning building at night at all.

(Made some LEs of the adjacent post-modernist Groninger Contemporary Art Museum as well, meanwhile HERE'S MORE)

Another take on the screaming lady.

Dagelijkse Groenmarkt 25 - The Hague.

In 1906 fashion house Schröder opened its doors. This building was designed by L. de Wolf. The iron construction , clad with natural stone , consists of three bays , with the central one forming the front of the "void" or interior balcony area. Nowadays it is the entrance to the shopping centre behind the facade , called Haagsche Bluf.

You find this kind of houses all over the "Harz"area in Germany. This house was too close to the road ( a sort of motorway) but it was breathtaking.

We viewed 8 houses like this one and now we have to think about pro's and con's of each one of them.
