The Levellers are an English rock band, founded in 1988 and based in Brighton, England. Their musical style is was influenced by punk and traditional/folk music. It is unclear whether the band got its name from a democratic faction of Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army; or according to guitarist, Simon Friend, was chosen from a dictionary.
They are Mark Chadwick, Jeremy Cunningham, Charlie Heather, Simon Friend, Jonathan Sevink and Matt Savage. Originally, all of the band's earnings being put together in a fund from which the members were paid the same amount every day.
1991 saw the release of their second album, Levelling the Land, the source of this track. The LP was a massive success, entering the charts at number 14. The anthemic single "One Way", despite not reaching the Top 40, became a popular song and live favourite for years to come among the travelling and indie community. Levelling the Land is often cited as an all-time classic amongst people who were students or travellers in the early 1990s.
The band are still active. For a good starting point, track down 'One Way of Life: The Very Best of The Levellers'. Tell 'em I sent you :-)

During the Jacobite rising of 1745, Edinburgh was briefly occupied by Jacobite forces before their march into England. Following their ultimate defeat at the Battle of Culloden, near Inverness, there was a period of reprisals and pacification, largely directed at the Catholic Highlanders.
In Edinburgh the Hanoverian monarch attempted to gain favour by supporting new developments to the north of the castle, naming streets in honour of the King and his family; George Street, Frederick Street, Hanover Street and Princes Street shown in this image at dusk, named in honour of George III's two sons.
The historic centre of Edinburgh is divided into two by the broad green swath of Princes Street Gardens. To the south the view is dominated by Edinburgh Castle, perched atop the extinct volcanic crag, and the long sweep of the Old Town trailing after it along the ridge. To the north lies Princes Street and the New Town. The gardens were begun in 1816 on bogland which had once been the Nor Loch.
One of the Edinburgh tramlines can be seen on the right. Edinburgh Trams is a forthcoming tramway system which is currently under construction in Edinburgh, Scotland. It will be the first tram system in Edinburgh since the city’s previous network, Edinburgh Corporation Tramways, shut down in 1956.
The new tram system was originally scheduled to come into operation in July 2011, but the estimated completion date is now 2014, and will initially consist of one line running east-west across the city. Further extensions are planned. Originally budgeted at a cost of £375 million in 2003, the tram system is now anticipated to cost over £600 million.

A great track from the London Conversations album. this time of year always reminds me of it with all the snowdrops in the hedgerows. Very uplifting that Easter and warmer, longer days just around the corner.
Saint Etienne are an English electronic music band from London, formed in 1990. The band consists of Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs. They are named of course after the French football team AS Saint-Étienne
Saint Etienne were associated with the "indie dance" genre in the early 1990s. Their typical approach was to combine sonic elements of the dance-pop that emerged in the wake of the so-called Second Summer of Love (e.g. samples and digitally synthesized sounds) with an emphasis on songwriting involving romantic and introspective themes more commonly associated with traditional British pop and rock music.
Early work demonstrated the influence of '60s soul, '70s dub and rock as well as '80s dance music, giving them a broad palette of sounds and a reputation for eclecticism. Years later, The Times wrote that they "deftly fused the grooviness of Swinging Sixties London with a post-acid house backbeat". Their first two albums, Foxbase Alpha and So Tough feature sounds chiefly associated with house music, such as standard TR-909 drum patterns and Italo house piano riffs mixed with original sounds, notable by the use of found dialogue, sampled from 1960s British realist cinema. Some of these earlier recordings included skits by (Brass Eye) satirist Chris Morris.

A cracking track, memorable to me because I was playing this getting carried away doing 38 in a 30mph cut through Hattersley avoiding Mottram one morning in 1984. The metallic green VW Golf 1300 has long gone, but my love for the Furs and this track remains un-dimmed.
Mirror Moves is the fourth studio album by the English rock band The Psychedelic Furs, recorded and released in 1984. Vince Ely had left the group, leaving three original Furs and Keith Forsey taking on production and drumming. The album included the dance hit "Heartbeat" and the minor hits "Heaven" and "The Ghost in You". Another track from the album, "Here Come Cowboys", was released as a single, but did not chart. However, the band made a video for it which received some airplay on the then, very new and popular MTV network.
Psychedelic Furs are one of the many acts spawned from the British post-punk scene. Their music went through several phases, from an initially austere art rock sound, later touching on new wave and hard rock.
They scored several hits in their early career, but were launched to international attention in 1986 when the film director John Hughes used their song "Pretty in Pink" for his movie of the same name. A newly recorded version of the song became the Psychedlic Furs' biggest hit to that time. "Heartbreak Beat", from their 1987 album Midnight to Midnight, was the Furs' biggest Top 40 entry in the US.

Porcupine Tree are a prog (progressive) rock band formed by Steven Wilson in 1987 in Hemel Hempstead, UK. A big fan of Tangerine Dream, Neu! and Can, Steven's style has moved more in recent years to heavy metal. From the 'In Absentia' album, when the band started to work with Danish photographer and filmmaker Lasse Hoile. This involvement created a distinctive image for the band and is part of the Tree's live experience.
In 2007 the band was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Surround Sound Album with their album 'Fear of a Blank Planet' and then again in 2010 with 'The Incident'. Steven Wilson has also been involved with No-Man and Blackfield. Both of whuch are worth checking out too.

Hornby Railways is the leading brand of model railway in the United Kingdom. Its roots date back to 1901, when founder Frank Hornby received a patent for his Meccano construction toy. The first clockwork train was produced in 1920. In 1938, Hornby launched its first 00 gauge train. In 1964, Hornby and Meccano were bought by their competitor Tri-Ang, and sold on when Tri-ang went into receivership. In the 1980s Hornby Railways became independent.
Like most kids I had one when I was young.
Hornby was at first a tradename for the railway productions of Meccano Ltd and based in Liverpool, which released its first train, a clockwork 0 gauge (1:48) model, in 1920. An electric train soon followed but was under-designed and the few that were made were sold out in France. In 1925, a much more successful electric model was introduced , operating on high voltage (220-240V ouch!) AC power. Safety concerns saw low voltage 4V and then 6V motors introduced, followed by a reliable 20V AC system, which was developed in the early 1930s. However, clockwork remained the mainstay of the Hornby 0 gauge trains until 1937 and became the only power available in Liverpool-made 0 gauge trains from 1949.
All Hornby train sets come with a TrakMat - a scenic underlay sheet which you can use as a base for your layout at any stage in its development. A TrakMat also tells you where to put the track, buildings and other accessories to complete the full TrakMat layout. So its still childs play. Grass, hedges, vegetation and gravel is easily added as is lighting for homes, shops, stations and pub models. Dont forget a railway cottage and trackside fencing to finish off!
If Matthew (pictured) reads this, it will cost me about another £150!

An iPod bought with customized gift box. For that much you actually get a plain white with a red elastic ribbon. And a small gift envelope. Inside, there's a folded piece of plain white 80gm paper printed with your gift message. iPod worth every cents. The gift box package, not worth it.

I got bored in the hotel tonight, so I tried a bit of light painting. First up... the iPod I use for Audio Books.
The light was provided by my Leatherman Monarch 300 (single LED bulb) mini-pen light.
The wood grain laminate did a nice job of providing a smooth slightly blurred reflection.
Captured as a horizontal, it was cropped in PSE because I liked it better. The crop was the only post-procrssing I did to the image.
Going to be for the music contest over at the LCN.
Ipod still needs to be trimmed and painted.
If you fav. please comment! Who knows you might surprise me.

I still think the iPod is a miraculous bit of technology. Plus, it's so cute.
Mine has this quote from Friedrich Nietzsche engraved on its back: "Without music, life would be a mistake." Totally.

my ipod sitting on the surface of a LCD monitor. (a PC monitor in spite of the logo)
The trick here is the ipod is sitting in the middle of a dell 2005fpw (same panel as an apple cinema display). The logo is displayed on the screen, which is also the primary light source. The edge lighting is my desk lamp which is much cooler and being diffusly reflected by the LCD's anti glare coating.
Wierd idea but I thought the result was kind of unusual and neat.
