This is what you see when you first walk into Amazement Square on Lynchburg, Virginia. Amazement Square is a fun interactive place for kids to see and learn cool things about science, local culture, and art. This is an old feed warehouse in Lynchburg that that has been renovated as are all buildings in the art district…it’s a very cool project that the city has put in place with the help of volunteers…The revitalization of an historic and once neglected part of the city. Best viewed large.

Flickr used to be a place of some jollity and interaction; somewhere you could post a photo and get innumerable comments from a whole host of different people. Now, apart from some long-term friends (to whom I am grateful for sticking around) there seems to be fewer comments, less humour, less interaction, less commitment. It has almost become a chore rather than an enjoyment.

It has served me well over the years and I’ve made many firm friendships, several of which have extended into ‘real life’, but I feel the need to make a change.

I’m as guilty as many I know for the lack of interaction. I tend not to visit often and I’m terrible at commenting on others’ submissions. My apologies. I am also not very good with the groups I belong to, so have decided to quit all but two. I’ve been posting the occasional picture these last few months, just to keep things fresh, but the incentive to interact on here is very low. Most time is spent on Facebook or Twitter, where a lot of new friends have been made, alongside some of the old ones from here. Both are more dynamic and interactive places and seem to suit my current lifestyle more.

Ipernity was an interesting diversion for a while, but that is even less ‘friendly’ than here it seems. I don’t have a ‘Pro’ account on either now.

So I’m thinking that there seems little point in adding photos here any longer as it serves no real purpose so far as I can see. I’m not seeking praise, affirmation, or gratuitous platitudes any longer.

I’m just content to be me.

Pictures get a few comments, then a load of ‘favorite’ adds with no comments. This seems the norm. Also, lots of friends have left the scene here, people I used to really enjoy the company of. Whilst their reasons are understandable - if quite complex sometimes - this is always very sad. Additionally, I have many things to deal with in life at the moment, some health issues I won’t bore you with and a general need to sort things out for the future.

So if you want to know what’s going on in my life and are keen to keep in touch then please do use one of the other areas of social media that I inhabit. I’ll add them to my profile. But for now, Kay’s days on Flickr are coming to end, five years has been a good run but it’s time to move on and look to the future that currently needs my attention.

I won’t be deserting the place entirely. I’ll visit and check out what everyone is doing, commenting where I can. I’m leaving my account active but I’m moving all the content from public to private, it's my personal archive and I'll not be deleting it.

Enjoy the view. I did.

Mesa Verde National Park, located in the southwestern corner of Colorado, is a great interactive place. One of the more adventurous cliff dwellings of the ancestral Puebloan people is Balcony House. This cliff dwelling is only available on a ranger-guided tour and involves climbing a 32 foot ladder, crawling through a 12 foot-long tunnel, and climbing up a 60 foot open rock face with two 10 foot ladders to exit the site.

While on the tour I waited in line to crawl through a narrow 12 foot-long tunnel, a woman in front of me froze up and screamed she was claustrophobic. After making a scene she turned to me commanded that I go before her. I happily obliged and squeezed my way through the tunnel being careful not to damage my Canon 5D camera all the while listening to the woman behind me continue to whine and complain.

At the conclusion of the tour we had to climb two ladders to exit the site. I stayed behind the rest of the tour group to get some unobstructed views of the cliff dwelling before heading up. I then spotted the annoying and claustrophobic woman approaching me so I decided to get to the ladders before she did.

As I approached the first ladder, I paused for a moment to adjust my camera around my shoulder and not before Ms. Claustrophobia shrieked, “What’s the matter?! Are you afraid of heights?!”

“No, I’m just adjusting my camera so it won’t swing unnecessarily against the wall and break into pieces” I calmly replied, “you do realize the entire tour group scaled a 32 foot ladder to begin the tour?”

“Oh, you must be one of those types really obsessed with photography!” she snorted.

I turned my back to her and started to climb the ladder.

“By the way please stay behind me at least 150 to 200 yards. Annoying people make me claustrophobic. Thank you.”

She yelled back some expletive but I kept a smile on my face the whole time.

Hey thanks for the comments on my last upload - was lucky to get those conditions for sure.

Loved watching these Falcons fly around - they moved so fast

Had a few goes a trying to capture them flying but now have even more respect for Wildlife photographers who get these types of birds pin sharp at full speed.

This is at Wingspan in Rotorua - very interactive place to visit some of our birdlife.

Chief Constable Alf Hitchcock and Police and Crime Commissioner Olly Martins held a joint online Facebook session on Friday 26 April. They were online between 11-12, during which time they both answered questions posted by members of the public about policing and crime.

Using Facebook enables Bedfordshire Police to get their message across in an informal and simple way to people who aren’t normally in contact with the force, and involve them in preventing crime and identifying criminals. One recent example was identifying a number of alleged football hooligans, whilst another man turned himself in after his friends saw him on the site. It is so useful as a source of intelligence that guidelines have been put onto it asking people not to post information directly on the site but to send it in confidentially so not to compromise investigations.

Web Manager Andrea Briggs explains: “I think our success is down to the two-way communication people enjoy from our Facebook page. It’s opened up a way of communicating with people who’d rather message us via Facebook rather than contact us another way. We get intelligence about offenders and can promote events such as the Luton SOS Bus, to people who do use other media.

“People ask us all sorts of questions - from the progress of an investigation to queries about why the Police helicopter doing flying over their house. We reply as quickly as possible so they keep up to date with what’s happening in their area and can help us with incidents. We also tell people about other useful sites if they ask a question about something we don’t deal with.

“An organisation can’t be an occasional user of Facebook, you have to provide people with up to date information to keep it fresh and interesting. People use our website if they are looking for something specific but through Facebook we get lots of people visiting from different communities and of all ages, which makes it easier to get advice to people and information from us.

“We give regular updates and new information on a daily basis to keep people coming back. Our success in building such a big fanbase in such a small county shows we are doing something right!”

“Facebook is a great way of engaging with residents, in particular younger and web-literate members of the public. It also provides a space where residents can discuss issues in their areas and offer their own ideas about solving problems or getting help. We do need to manage the comments people put on the site, sometimes having to remove offensive language, but the benefit of this open dialogue definitely outweighs the occasional annoyance. It is a truly interactive place.”

The Advantages of Using Digital Signage for Government Offices

Government offices have started using digital signage as a means to easily inform, not only those whom work in their offices, but also the general public of on going projects within that particular government building. Using this technology is not only a way for the government to keep up to date with the present innovations, but also as a cost efficient means to keep constituents easily informed of things taking place within the building, such as meetings, visitors to various departments, community events, etc.

The usage of digital signage has increased tremendously all over the world with China being the largest consumer. At present there are multitudes of companies manufacturing or even controlling digital signage as means to help inform the public.

Digital signage is simply a digital screen which performs tasks that traditional signs do, as well as showing television programs, advertisements, announcements, menus, and many others. It uses display technology such as LCD and LED. Digital signage is usually installed on both community and personal places such as stores, hotels, corporate buildings, and of course government offices.

Controlling the digital signage is easy. Computer device or office servers using specialized programs for the purpose of posting messages usually do this. Such programs also act as drivers for these devices.

Digital signage came about as a cheaper and more efficient alternative to posting announcements. Compared to static signs, it saves time, energy, and money. One of the greatest advantages of using digital signage in government office buildings is that it’s easier to update the information displayed. In addition digital signage is also interactive. Placing colors or images to make it look interesting and eye-catching (or make it animated) are a couple of tricks used to grab the attention of building visitors.

The interactive feature of this digital signage is the reason why these are also seen outside of buildings. It means that digital signs can also be used as powerful and compelling advertisements. Certain companies use this as a way to advertise their products or services to people who are walking down the streets or in offices or public places. This has proven to be an effective way for governments to earn additional revenue and improve their programs without placing an additional tax burden on their constituents.

Additionally, digital signage can also integrate touch screen technology. This is the reason why most government offices also use this display. It also serves as an easy way for clients to do transactions or easily browse for information.

Technology of Digital Signage

Digital signage is composed of a screen (or multiple screens), media player, and content management server. This is all networked together to produce the desired display. Sometimes one signage is composed of multiple screens, media players and content management, which are all in synchrony, allowing each screen to show a specific part of the certain advertisement. And while it may cost a bit more, digital signs are available that have these three features combined into one component. The advantage is it’s a bit easier to setup, however, maintenance is similar regardless of the style of digital sign that you choose.

When it comes to modern screen displays, the most used is the LED matrix, primarily because LED displays are cheaper and use less energy than their CRT, Plasma and LCD counterparts. No additional component is needed to control or showcase the picture such as those in LCD displays. With companies and government offices focusing on being green, another reason why LED displays are so popular is because they use less energy, making them more environmental friendly. Different styles of LED’s, such as OLED or AMOLED, are safer to use and are more durable. Because these displays are also enhanced, they offer up a clearer/higher resolution image as well.

Purpose of digital signage in government offices

Usage of digital signage is becoming more popular in many businesses and since the private sector typically drives government innovation, this is the reason why the government sees it fit to use them in informing the public.

Digital signage posts various public information such as news, weather, travels information and certain news headlines like the current stock market information. This helps keep government manage things running smoothly, such as infrastructure projects, funding, and medical missions.

Menu information is another reason common use of digital signage. This is not only limited in restaurants, but in health organizations too. But we’re not just talking about the food being served, but also nutritional facts informing consumers of food that may be unhealthy. They also have photos of food and recipes that can be prepared for those who are looking after their diet. This can also include medical supplements provided in public hospitals and clinics and even treatments.

Advertisement is the most common reason why such signage exists outside buildings. The government needs to update the people on certain services from their offices. In addition, posting job openings not only in their offices, but also in other establishments is an advantage of digital signage. Even health announcements such as advocacy campaigns can be easily displayed with digital signs. And during election season, digital signs may be used to help aid in the election process. For example, these signs are a convenient and efficient way to inform people of certain events that concern the nation, such as debates or speeches.

Displays are also used as a way to inform people who visit government offices, especially those where there’s registration involved, managing a long line of people waiting to see an agent. They even help direct constituents to which booth or office they should go.

Another benefit of display signage is interactive screen maps which are used to give people direction on what each floor has or where they can find a certain office they need to go to.

Informing the public

Government offices fulfill a number of crucial roles, such as informing their constituents of important events, emergency weather management, other alert services, and so much more. Such informational devices are a great help to government offices.

Taylor Studios designed, built, and installed multiple exhibits for the Judicial Learning Center at Thomas F. Eagleton U.S. Courthouse in St. Louis, Missouri. The Judicial Learning Center is a unique space in this federal courthouse. It was created to inform visitors about the judicial process in the courts of the United States, and promote public understanding about the rule of law in American society. The exhibit gallery is divided into four major areas, interpreting judicial independence, the federal court system, how courts work, and the Eighth Judicial Circuit. Taylor Studios also created a changeable section for courthouse staff to post current events and feedback from the public.

The one room gallery was set up like a courtroom, with a jury box and judge’s bench. Both the jury box and the judge’s bench were utilized as unique settings for interactives, placing the visitor in the role of judge and juror. Shown here, along the judge’s bench, push button interactives asked questions about a judge’s role, rewarding correct answers with a light-up gavel.

In Hungary one of the main climate issues is the droughts. This was the main base of our Land Art .

Our land art piece is creating the Earth from small stones surrounded by a fire circle. We want to symbolize the promblem of the drought in the world, the flaming point in Europe is Hungary.

And fire circle is symbolizing that the local issues are components of a big, worldwide problem!

our message is: One local problem in a short time can cause a worldwide, burning issue!

Because are we choose the drought for our theme that's why we were materials like stone, dry soil and fire for our installation instead of green plants or flowers.

We have made our Land Art piece in the backyard of our school, which transformed into a community-interactive place when we made it: the pedestrian stopped on their way, they were suggesting ideas. Our team was working equally on the Land Art, but it was open to everybody to add something new.

Thanks to two leadership gifts totaling $4 million, The Arboretum at Penn State will create and grow the Children's Garden, an interactive place for children to learn and to explore the natural world. A gift from Edward R. and Helen S. Hintz will fund the construction of the space, and a gift from Charles H. 'Skip' Smith will create an endowment to maintain the garden and develop its educational programs. A previously announced gift from Marcia Day in 2008 will provide endowment support for children’s education programs.

Shown here, flip books placed along the jury box prompt visitors to answer questions about serving on a jury.
