This is the most dramatic photo of the group, the place where I have seen how it can be hard to support a family.

On the east of the island of Java there is a volcano, the kawijen. In its crater, sulfur has been extracted since the 60's. These miners go down into this hell twice a day and go up wrapped in sulfur vapors. The load on their shoulders touches nearly 100 kgs and often they are barefoot.

I take one of these pictures near the exit of my house door to remind me not to complain about my job!

Thanks for viewing.

Have a great weekend!

Everytime I face the ocean I'm impressed by the amplitude of tides there (really bigger than the one in our Mediterranean sea). Judging from the encrusted poles here is at least 1.2m.

Getting back to the flickrsphere - a pic following up from Indonesia trip that I started to document a few weeks ago - not a great pic but a great memory. A colleague took us out to lunch to a fabulous restaurant where they bring out a set menu of dishes - a lot of them - you eat what you want and only pay for what you eat - the best part is the waiter carries out all of these plates at once - very cool to see!

Tellalang Rice Terraces, Bali - INDONESIA

this is a verrrrrrry old one and it is from film, so i had to scan it

i made it in 1978 as i was in indonesia for half a year.

a friend took me on a tour on motorcycle through the mountains

we met gorgeous people, locals and children,

and we drank coconutmilk from a coconut somewhere ....

and at last we found high up in the mountains, where one of my cousins had a house.

from my cousins house we had a most breathtaking view over a valley from which

- day and night - so many sounds ascended. like thousands of crickets, paradise birds singing,

cock crowing, dogs belling and once in while you could hear some people playing gamelan

i get tears in my eyes when i hear the music, i was 21 and i knew i had come home.

grew up in holland, but i was born in indonesia ... and came back there for the very first time in 1978

Bromo volcano sunrise (long exposure)

Gong player of the gamelan, a javanese musical orchestra, performing daily at the kraton (a local name for palace). He hardly play except intermittently and one strike toward the end signaling the closure. Most of the time he is enjoying the music. The sultan still lives in the kraton and he is also the governor of the ancient city, Jogjakarta. Java, Indonesia.

I wonder whether you think of me when you see the sky

or when the rain touches you.

Sulawesi Selatan - Torajaland - Makale - Lemo - Stone-carved burial site

A stone-carved burial site. Tau tau (effigies of the deceased) were put in the cave, looking out over the land.

There are three methods of burial: the coffin may be laid in a cave or in a carved stone grave, or hung on a cliff. It contains any possessions that the deceased will need in the afterlife. The wealthy are often buried in a stone grave carved out of a rocky cliff. The grave is usually expensive and takes a few months to complete. In some areas, a stone cave may be found that is large enough to accommodate a whole family.
