The Thalia is on the right, the Lumière behind it on the right.

To Abraham Tuschinski, Thalia was also the godess of Cinema theaters and thus decided to name the first theater he built 'Thalia', on the Coovest in Rotterdam. It was later moved to the Hoogstraat, were he put up a true picture palace.

This was demolished during the bombing in May 1940 when the Second World War had started. After the war, Tuschinski and two other owners of the bombed Scala and Lumière were allowed to erect a temporal combined theater, named the Lutusca, which was situated on the Kruisplein, behind the Lumière on this postcard. Both Tuschinski and Lumière decided to build new theaters in 1955, and one just opened a couple of months after the other.

Thalia had 802 seats when it opened, and had no balcony, but 'stadium seating'. Although there was a lot of art in and around the auditorium and lobby, it wasn't decorated as much as the former theater or as the Tuschniski theater in Amsterdam.

Thalia was shut in 1997 when owner Pathé was succesfully running it's 7-screen Pathé Schouwburgplein plex around the corner. In it's later years it was one of the locations that housed the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Pathé also shut down the Lumière the four screen (it had 1120 seats when it opened with a single screen with balcony, and 641 in 2000) only recently, on September 9th, 2003. It has now been revamped, housing shops and a gym.

Sometimes it's hard to make the distinction between the film festival and the red light district.
