Final screening of the IFFR 2014. In 1982, three girls are starting a punk band. Probably a nice movie for kids...

I went to the International Film Festival in Rotterdam (IFFR) in January, and of course took my camera with me.
I went to see Achilles and the toirtoise by Kitano 'Beat' Takeshi. It was a nice enough film, nothing spectacular. The gist of the story was about how an artist is always one step away from achieving the goals that are set for an artist. Either by themselves or by critics. Just like in Zeno's original paradox of Achilles and the tortoise. Achilles gets ever closer to the tortoise who got a headstart, but never overtakes him. for when Achilles reaches the point where the turtle started, the turtle has travelled a distance as well, however small. Eventually meaning your goals are always ahead of you.
The paradox was nicely illustrated at the start of the film. Kitano's latest films are usually quite random, but this one clearly had a story to tell. And it was funny to see Kitano himself portray the main character (as an experimental painter) at some point. No real surprise since besides making films he actually paints himself.
During the films you are of course not allowed take pictures. And I wasn't planning of using my camera in the cinema at all. But I didn't know that an auditorium could look so interesting while no film was being projected. Before the film started I noticed the pattern of the ceiling lights together with the weird illuminated screen. I figured this would make for an interesting picture when the film had ended and set that as my goal.
So when everyone left I took this picture.
Alone in the cinema, caught in the artist's paradox.

The movie (IFFR page) is a character study of a sexy Argentinean actress Emi (engagingly played by Silvia Pérez ) who has had her best days, yet she enjoys life. She takes her 15-year old niece under her wings.
