International Film Festival of Rotterdam

International FilmFestival Rotterdam 2015Photo-a-Day Challenge group nr28

International Film Festival Rotterdam, 22 January - 2 February

Netherllands, Rotterdam, Oude Westen, West-Kruiskade, Wijkpark, Chinese New Year, Year of the Rabbit, Chinese market, Angry Birds (uncut)

The success of Angry Birds not only depends on the quality of this quirky mobile phone game but also on the strategic placement of Angry Birds dioramas round the globe. This one was positioned on the Chinese open air market. ;-)

The IFFR cleverly included the Chinese new year festivities in its XL program .

Dramatic in redPhoto a Day Challenge nr22

During the IFFR 2005, this pic was shot from the main floor of the Pathe multiplex cinema shot into the lobby and ticket counter area with its vide. It shows people moving in and out the cinema. They are talking and waitin’, leafing thru the Daily Tiger (the bi-lingual daily festival newspaper) and deciding if there’s enough time between films to grab a bite or have a coffee somewhere.

Behind the glass façade the Schouwburg-square is in view with its typical green lighted metal grated strips flagging the shortest way from the cinema to the Schouwburg.

The cinema is build above a underground parking lot which it supports, so its design is ‘light’ weight due to the metal skeleton. The 7 theaters are positioned in two layers. For the 4 theaters of the bottom layer the top floor of the underground parking lot was demolished.

I balanced the Oly on the edge of the barrier to steady it, shooting downwards.

Europe, Netherlands, Gelderland, Arnhem, Arhem Centraal station (UNStudio), Central hall, facade and windows (uncut)

While exploring the new Arnhem Centraal station during a great photo safari with lunch with Leun we talked about the complex and large scale geometrics of the station that make symmetric composition kinda difficult and that a better way to tackle the station visually is to concentrate on the organic aspect of it. And in the hall I found a part that even was anthropomorphic. Hence the title ;-)

Personally I was really fascinated and almost elated about the spatial flow and line and light play of the new part of the station. And a variant of the famous slogan of Huub Bals , the first and late director of the IFFR entered my mind: “Als je niet bij Film International bent geweest, moet je verder je smoel houden als er ergens over film wordt gepraat” - “If you didn’t visit the Film International, you should shut up in places where film is discussed”, became: “If you didn’t visit the Arnhem Centraal, you should shut up in places where Station design is discussed”. ;-)

But this was an enthusiasm that was basically a photographic one and one that mainly applies to the new hall. Using the station as a passenger, there are flaws in the design. The several parts of the station sometimes don’t work very well together. For instance when you enter the kinda spartan low ceilinged tunnel from the visual lush hall, you get the feeling that the fun is suddenly gone. And the fun doesn’t really return on the platforms. The detailing is somewhat messy here – the structure of the platform shelters and other structures is not formed by beautifully sculpted ‘bare’concrete like in the new hall, but is covered with edgy already slightly weathered paneling. And alas the station isn’t neatly integrated in the urban fabric of the city centre – for pedestrians there’s no obvious / logical routing to and from the city centre.

So the station is stylistically not very well integrated and there are some functionaistic flaws – but maybe the fantastic main hall with the adjacent bus station will become it’s saving grace. Time will tell ;-)
