It all started with a display window shot. The dummy’s posture was so suggestive and I felt I could do something with it. Rarely I have a precisely drawn up plan on what I want, very often is the piece itself that takes shape on its own, grows with its own life. Certainly I have preferences and tend toward mystery and magic, but most of the time have no idea of what the result will be. But in this case always had the feeling that wanted to transform that dummy into a shaman.

Love experimenting with textures and colors so I began doing so, adding many layers of textures in Stackables, playing with all the blending modes and saving those that felt could be useful; most of the time I start with my own formulas, saved in the app, and then try to enrich them according to the feeling I’m beginning to get about the piece. When I had a considerable number of images, began to blend each other, masking the parts that wanted to discard or keep. Always do a lot of different blends and when everything begins to take shape I focus on one or two of them, finally choosing only one, going on with the blending. Guess this piece has at least between 15 and 20 layers of textures and at least 10 blends.

Masking different versions of the same image is a lot of fun, because just by that fact you can create new shapes without needing a second source image - for instance the presence behind the shaman or both figures' eyes. To that end I usually work in iColorama S and Image Blender, always both. For precision touches I prefer the second, choosing the soft brush which implicates a lot more work than the hard one, but you get sharper lines (I know it sounds contradictory, but thats what happens in Image Blender, the hard brush produces "dirty", "harsh" lines). On the other hand, although I find much more difficult to obtain sharper lines in iColorama (in many ways this app is still a mystery to me), it is more versatile due to the fact that you can mask in every tool and brush, not only when blending images. So when it comes to blend/mask, always use both apps.

Finished the piece in Snapseed, for vignette and bright, and Repix, a cool app for retouching and adding tiny details; also love iColorama for details.

Can you see me?

- I know it is dark.

I am here.

- My arms are open.

Do you want to come closer?

- My heart pulls inward.

When you are ready...

- My love is unconditional.

Backstory:

I wanted to create a storytelling image. After deciding to use a neutral background, I gathered a white sheet, iPhone, tripod, and remote shutter. I've been using the garage for a makeshift studio, as of late. I made a couple of trips in and out of the space, until I had all the goodies strategically placed. I found a black dress, in the closet, and thought it felt right. I slipped into it, peeled off my socks, and made the last trip to the garage. This creative gathering is all part of the process.

This is image was one of the last ones taken, during this creative time. I set the remote shutter to capture multiple shots. I gathered the sheet, from the floor, and twirled in a small circle. The motion was captured and the play was complete.

Mobile photography offers such a generous platform on which to share such spiritual, storytelling imagery. I'm intoxicated, true story.

Emerald City is a combination of two photos. The first is a city skyline taken in Boston Mass. It was merged in the Diana app with a photo of a glass sculpture with a strong green color cast. I then added birds from the Distressed FX app and finished it in Snapseed. It reminded me of the Emerald City in the Wizard of Oz.

Combining images in apps like Diana, Image Blender, or SuperimposeX is a great source of new images. I can then manipulate them in apps like Hipstamatic, iColorama s, Waterlogue, Distressed FX, etc.

It is good but sad that the warehouse we had some wedding pictures taken in front of is being torn down to build a hotel.

Unlike the Soviet Union (for example) Cuba's Communist Party government never banned religion or religious practice. They did forbid Church members from joining the Communist Party, but that restriction has since been lifted. About 60% of the Cuban population is Roman Catholic; at the same time, interestingly, about 60% also claims or admits to practicing Santeria. Our tour guide, Gustavo, said that there is probably even more overlap than these numbers would indicate. One typical situation would be that of a person who is a practicing Catholic and who finds himself in some kind of serious trouble. In addition to prayer and other spiritual practices typical of Catholics, he might very well consult with a priest of the Santeria religion (a Santero or Santera) for assistance.

Those who choose to formally enter the Santeria religion must wear all white clothing for a year and undergo other practices relating to a spiritual "cleansing," such as abstaining from sexual activity for that year prior to initiation. We saw a number of people all in white -- clothing, shoes, socks, even umbrellas. Not everyone who asks for help from a the Santeria priest formally joins the community; some are somehow discerned by the priest as a person who does not need this. I guess these lucky folks are just sent on their way, perhaps after also engaging in some other sorts of less onerous rituals in hopes of helping them get out of their troubling situation.

Despite the 60% figures for both of Cuba's two major religions, Gustavo told us that it seems clear to all in Cuba that the population has become and continues to become more secular than in years past.
