"The sea's our field of harvest,

it's scaley tribes our grain;

we'll reap the teeming waters,

as at home they reap the plain."

Iascaire uimhir 1 - Fisherman No. 1 - on Helvick pier, County Waterford. The name, Heilbhic/Helvick is Viking in origin!

Iascaire i gCarraig, An Fháirche, Conamara. (in aice le Conga). Tá Carraig 'san Ghaeltacht. Fisherman at Carrick, near Clonbur, on shores of Lough Corrib, Connemara. Whilst in this area I stayed at Cong Hostel, apast Ashford Castle on road to Galway. Highly recommended.

For a good night's traditional music, check out Lydons' Pub, also Danaghers'Hotel. Both again highly recommended. If you can play, or sing, you will be even more welcome! The hostel also has excellent provision for campers and those with caravans.

Bilingual sign seen on Inisheer, the smallest of the three Aran Islands on the west coast of Ireland.

There is a lot of social and linguistic history in this tiny sign. Irish used to be the dominant language in Ireland up to the nineteenth century, but has steadily declined since. There are many reasons for this decline, including the Great Famine, emigration and the lack of status for the Irish language - Irish became the language of the poor and English the language you needed to have if you were to better your life and social standing.

The Aran Islands are one of the few areas in which they still speak Irish today, but English has a presence even here. Much of the English visible in the landscape is intended for tourists, like this sign. The one Irish phrase here, Teach an Iascaire, is translated by the English 'Fishermans Cottage', while the two other English phrases have no Irish equivalent.
