Image from side-two of an original 19th century H.W. Johns Asbestos Paints 3-panel brochure, with actual paint samples.
A vertical pipe riser inside a utility shaft insulated with a partially damaged section of canvas-covered magnesia-based asbestos insulation showing an original, vintage manufacturers product label; an early version of Johns-Manville trademark paper sticker that indicates "H.W. JOHNS-MANVILLE COMPANY", "J-M 85% MAGNESIA", "NEW YORK -- MILWAUKEE" (USA).
The damaged section of magnesia pipe insulation (or "mag" for short) demonstrates its classic characteristics: white color, very fibrous, and soft, powdery texture.
Additional distinctive physical properties of the material is that it is rather crumbly and unusually lightweight.
The "85%" is in reference to the material containing an average 85% magnesium carbonate and 15% asbestos fiber materials, although actual amounts can vary.
This particular material as shown was installed inside a building constructed around 1920.
1908 illustraton showing J-M asbestos insulation materials used on stack or flue equipment. Anywhere heat insulation was needed, asbestos was there.
Another illustrated example of one type of asbestos pipe insulation, this one combining layered cattle hair and asbestos, simply called "asbestos hair felt".
This image is from a 1908 insulation product catalog by the former H.W. Johns-Manville Company and is only one of several hundred different types of asbestos materials once offered by Johns-Manville at the peak of its existence. And J-M was only one of many asbestos manufacturing companies, each with its own wide array of distinct asbestos products as well.

All dressed up to install asbestos(?). Nowadays, workers get all "dressed up" (disposable coveralls and respirators) to remove asbestos.
Another 1908 illustraton showing J-M asbestos insulation materials used on boiler equipment. Founded in 1858, HW John's company already had 60-years of asbestos production at this point in its long history, eventually becoming the world's largest asbestos manufacturer. So much asbestos, so many people, so much tragedy.

Rather ornately illustrated cover page for an H.W. Johns asbestos catalog from 1888. Interior pages describe various early types of asbestos insulations and materials; reverse of cover page discusses the previous 30-years of business (since 1858) H.W. Johns had been manufacturing "the world's best asbestos insulation products". By 1901 the H.W. Johns Manufacturing Company would merge with Manville Covering Company to become HW Johns-Manville Co., and later reincorporated in 1926 as Johns-Manville Corporation.
Illustration of thin asbestos felt insulation, in rolled sheet-form for applying onto larger surfaces of side-walls, floors, wood-partitions, heat shielding, etc. Image is from a 1908 insulation product catalog by the former H.W. Johns-Manville Company and is only one of several hundred different types of asbestos materials once offered by Johns-Manville at the peak of its existence. And to think, J-M was only one of many asbestos manufacturing companies, each with its own wide array of distinct asbestos products as well.
Early 1908 illustrated example of one kind of asbestos pipe insulation, once offered by the H.W. Johns-Manville Company, called "Air Cell" or aircell. Aircell asbestos insulation is somewhat recognizable by its corrugated layers of thick, light grey paper, often mistaken as common "cardboard".
In 1901, H.W. Johns Manufacturing and Manville Covering Co. merged to form the H. W. Johns-Manville Company, going on later to become the world's formerly largest asbestos manufacturer; at one time offering hundreds of different types of asbestos materials.

1908 illustration of a tradesman installing J-M asbestos insulating cement on furnace. "Fireite", an early attempt at asbestos material branding incorporating a mineral-based heat insulation: FIRE + ITE.
Another illustrated example of one type of asbestos pipe insulation, this one in particular a proprietary brand, called "Vitribestos". Similar to corrugated "air cell" insulation, but the material was "vitrified", adding a measure of durability to the paper.

Another illustrated example of one type of asbestos pipe insulation, called "magnesia" or "mag" for short, from the longer name based upon its main composition, magnesium carbonate. Magnesia asbestos insulation is rather recognizable by its white, powdery, and fibrous nature; quite often found installed on steam pipes and other high-temperature heat applications (boilers, furnaces, ovens, kilns, etc.). This material is unusually lightweight and very crumbly, consequently making it susceptible to damage.

And to think, J-M was only one of many asbestos manufacturing companies, each with its own wide array of distinct asbestos products as well.
Another illustrated example of one type of asbestos pipe insulation, an uncommon material referred simply as "Combination Felt Covering". As its name implies, this insulation is a combination of alternating layers of asbestos and hair felt.

Johns-Manville Company and is only one of several hundred different types of asbestos materials once offered by Johns-Manville at the peak of its existence. And J-M was only one of many asbestos manufacturing companies, each with its own wide array of distinct asbestos products as well.
Another illustrated example of one type of asbestos pipe insulation, this one in particular a proprietary brand, called "Asbestocel". Asbestocel pipe insulation is recognizable by corrugated layers of asbestos paper, similar to corrugated "air cell" insulation, but the corrugations are oriented latitudinally around the pipe. This asbestos material typically can be found installed on low-pressure steam and hot-water pipe systems.

And J-M was only one of many asbestos manufacturing companies, each with its own wide array of distinct asbestos products as well.
Another illustrated example of one type of asbestos pipe insulation, this one called "wool felt". Wool felt asbestos insulation is recognizable by the thick, dense layers of wool felt, with an inner lining of asbestos paper; usually found installed on cold-water pipe systems. This insulation material has been found to be problematic for asbestos identification by surveyors/inspectors, due the position of the asbestos "buried" deep within the dense felt layers.

The New York Mesothelioma lawyer
Once considered the cradle of American asbestos industry, New York can now take their citizens for mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.
HW Johns Manufacturing Company was founded by Henry Ward Johns in 1858 and specializes in asbestos roofs, textiles and insulating materials. Gradually developed at Johns Manville Corporation, which was known as the largest asbestos manufacturing company in the world. John died of asbestos in 1898.
-->
He has served the automotive, aerospace, insulation and construction in mid - 1980. In 1982, the dangers of asbestos became public knowledge and the company had to seek protection under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code as a result of asbestos-related lawsuits. Meanwhile, the company has managed to catch up 181th on the Fortune 500 and became the richest company to date to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Asbestos can be found as a common feature of many historic buildings in New York and other New England states. Construction materials containing asbestos. Nearly 400 public buildings, projects and institutions have reported problems with exposure to asbestos. Oil refineries, shipyards, schools, power stations and churches are some of them.
The death toll in the state of New York as a result of asbestos-related diseases has increased from 2,626 in 1979 to 4,088 2001 Action Fund for the Environmental Working Group reported. There is a huge gap in the data of the reason that the government began tracking mesothelioma deaths until 1990.
Exposure to asbestos and 11 September
The attacks on the World Trade Center in New York September 11 had exposure to asbestos emissions increasingly important. Workers who participated in the location in the rescue and recovery were at risk of developing asbestos-related diseases.
2,000 pounds of asbestos fibers into the air when the north tower was attacked Asbestos was used in the construction of the North Tower. People working on the site, including firefighters, police, paramedics, workers and all those who are directly at risk. People who live, work or study near Ground Zero were also in danger.
New York and New Jersey mesothelioma attorneys mesothelioma lawyers have been helpful to develop an unprecedented array of knowledge, experience, skills and reputation for successfully representing mesothelioma patients. this is the memorial set up on castro and 18th on sunday, shortly after john burnside, long-time partner of harry hay, died on september 14th. he's known for many things--the founding of the Radical Faeries in 1979 and the invention of the teleidoscope (of which i knew nothing about until i read his obit).
he was an amazing man. www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/09/23/BAGH...
"The Radical Faeries...began as a gathering of about 150 gay men to bring a new level of consciousness and spirituality to the gay liberation movement [and] has grown into an international movement."
