These boys were eager to show off their new trainers and wanted to pose for the camera. I had my fisheye on, so they look a bit bigger than they really were. I asked for their email address, so I could send them this picture, but they told me they were too busy ;-)
Statue of Czar Peter the Great (1672-1725).
The statue is a gift from the Russian Federation to the city of Rotterdam and is located at the entrance of the Veerhaven. (The statue has been moved slightly, facing the other river bank, which makes this photo unique ;-))
(Veerhaven means Ferry Harbour, as this used to be the place from where the ferry crossed the river Maas. Until the Willems Bridge was completed it was the only way to get to the other side of the river!)

Hotel New York in Rotterdam last Sunday: chilly, but perfect photo weather!
Again, I was showing someone the joys of a wide angle lens (not too difficult for a dedicated wide angle lover!). Perfect to capture this word (Madison) as foreground interest.
Lovely location.

On the left bank of the city on the Maas, a start has been made with the realisation of the new plans for this area, the ?Kop van Zuid?. This will be the largest project the centre of Rotterdam will experience in the next twenty years. Here, a Rotterdam hotel opened its doors in the spring of 1993: Hotel New York.
A new Rotterdam hotel, housed in a historic Rotterdam building: some hundred years ago, the building which was to serve as head office of the Holland-Amerika Lijn reached completion. In 1984, the building was sold, after which it stood empty for ten years?
Hotel New York is a modern hotel and café-restaurant with 72 rooms and 7 function rooms, situated in one of the most attractive spots in Rotterdam, a location with new town planning developments, international in scale. It is not the intention of HNY to look back nostalgically and capture the grandeur of hotels of yesteryear. Rather, it wants to bring to life the hospitality and the elegance of travel back then, in its own way. This is no less than you would expect from a hotel with the name New York, based in an international harbour city. On the outside, the former head office of the Holland-Amerika Lijn has a cosmopolitan feeling: its fa?ade is symmetrical in design, with balconies, dormer windows, towers and decorations; most grand hotels built around 1880 adhered to that style. In addition, the building is magnificently situated, with views of the city's skyline, the harbour and the river ? another precondition for a grand hotel. At night, you can experience the peace and tranquillity of a hotel on the water. From the building?s many vantage points, you can watch often spectacular sunsets, while the windows afford views of the clouds and city lights. Extra attractions in nineteenth century hotels included a winter garden and a observation tower, the so-called belvedere. HNY has two towers, both of which are hotel rooms. While 19th century hotels had carriages with a regular coachman, and later a limousine with chauffeur, this hotel offers the serviced of a watertaxi with skipper! This means you will be in the Veerhaven directly opposite the hotel in 5 minutes, or you sail to the Leuvehaven (city centre).

The fomer head offices of the Holland America Line, now a hotel and restaurant.
When the hotel opened its doors in 1993 the Erasmus Bridge wasn't there yet, so it was quite a journey to get to this place. Nowadays it's only a few minutes away from the city centre, not just because of the Erasmus Bridge, but also because of the additional subway station at the beginning of the pier.
Behind the hotel you see the tallest apartment building in The Netherlands, called Montevideo.

"Lost Luggage" at the end of the pier where the ships sailed to America, or a new life for many people really. I always get that feeling when people are waving off holiday makers, as the cruise liners depart from the same spot.
A reference to all passengers who ever departed on a ship of the Holland America Line for a far-off destination. Three rows of suitcases, trunks and other pieces of luggage piled in an octagonal pavilion. Designed by the Canadian artist Jeff Wall.
