Every time my cousin Erik (8 years old now) comes over for a weekend in Rotterdam he wants to go to the highest point: the Euromast. Since I quite like the view myself I never resist ;-) Luckily he's now old enough to go in the evening, which makes for much more interesting photographs!

View on the city of Rotterdam, the Netherlands as seen from the Euromast observation deck.
From 1873 untill the 1970’s Rotterdam’s Wilhelminakade was the thriving hub of the Holland America Line (HAL). steamships whose names were familiar to all, such as the ‘rotterdam’, the ‘Nieuw Amsterdam’ and the ‘Statendam’, carried hundreds of thousands of passengers from Rotterdam to New York. at the time the company headquarters were situated at the site of the present hotel new york, and the current Cruise Terminal Rotterdam (architects Bakema en Van de Broek) was the passenger terminal for both arrivals and departures. shortly after 1970, Rotterdam was no longer a port for the passenger trade. However, nowadays Rotterdam is proud to receive cruise ships again.
Rotterdam (Wilhelminakade) houses several of the tallest structures in the Netherlands, in this photo the following structures can be seen: The Erasmus Bridge (Erasmusbrug) is a 790-meter (2,600 ft) cable stayed bridge linking the north and south of Rotterdam. It is held up by a 138 meters (453 ft) tall pylon with a characteristic bend, earning the bridge its nickname 'De Zwaan' ('the Swan'). Rotterdam has the tallest residential building in the Netherlands: the New Orleans Tower (158.35 metres (519.5 ft)). In this photo it's the building is situated in the middle. Rotterdam is also home to the tallest office building 'Maastoren' (164.75 m (540.5 ft)) which houses Deloitte (first building at left side).

Rotterdam is the second-largest city in the Netherlands and one of the largest ports in the world. Starting as a dam constructed in 1270 on the Rotte River, Rotterdam has grown into a major international commercial centre. Its strategic location at the Rhine-Meuse-Scheldt delta on the North Sea and at the heart of a massive rail, road, air and inland waterway distribution system extending throughout Europe is the reason that Rotterdam is often called the "Gateway to Europe".
In the Province of South Holland Rotterdam is in the west of Netherland and the south of the Randstad. The population of the city was 616,250 on February 1, 2012. The population of the greater Rotterdam area, called "Rotterdam-Rijnmond" or just "Rijnmond", is approximately 1.3 million. Rotterdam is one of Europe's most vibrant, multicultural cities; known for its university (Erasmus), cutting-edge architecture, lively cultural life, striking riverside setting, its maritime heritage and the Rotterdam Blitz.
The largest port in Europe and one of the busiest ports in the world, the port of Rotterdam was the world's busiest port from 1962 to 2004, when it was surpassed by Shanghai. Rotterdam's commercial and strategic importance is based on its location near the mouth of the Nieuwe Maas (New Meuse), a channel in the delta formed by the Rhine and Meuse on the North Sea. These rivers lead directly into the centre of Europe, including the industrial Ruhr region.
Euromast is an observation tower in Rotterdam, Netherlands, designed by Hugh Maaskant constructed between 1958 and 1960. It was specially built for the 1960 Floriade, and is a listed monument since 2010.[5] The tower is a concrete stucture with an internal diameter of 9 m (30 ft) and a wall thickness of 30 m (98 ft). For stability it is built on a concrete block of 1,900,000 kg (4,200,000 lb) so that the centre of gravity is below ground. It has a "crow's nest" observation platform 96 m (315 ft) above-ground and a restaurant. Originally 101 m (331 ft) in height it was the tallest building in Rotterdam. It lost this position for a while, but regained it when the Space Tower was added to the top of the building in 1970, giving an additional 85 m (279 ft). Euromast is a member of the World Federation of Great Towers.

From 1873 until 1971 many emigrants embarked here in large numbers, most of them debarking in New York City on arrival in the ‘Promised Land’.
Nowadays, it is a conference centre, hotel and restaurant, called Hotel New York.
Concerning sliding, I made the picture substantially lighter, applied several colour filters, and soem other small tweaks.

Last Friday I was in Rotterdam. Boy, was I glad I had my rain clothes with me! Shortly before I took this shot, the rain came pouring down hard. While it's not clearly visible here, I've seldom seen the Maas river as wild as that day. Then again, it was windy as hell.
During the worst of the downpour, the Kop van Zuid was almost obscured by a thick curtain of rain. A rare and extremely photogenic moment, if not for the fact that it was raining hard where I stood, as well. So impossible conditions for actually taking a shot, unfortunately. And so this snap will have to do.
Last night we were in Rotterdam when darkness fell. Lights went on, the city never sleeps..
The pink light is a project asking attention for women with breastcancer. Even without any project such colours add something to the surroundings, giving depth to the picture.
