The amount of birds here was quite Hitchcockian...

Look Out ! - - - Here They Come !

Sometimes, I'm reminded of Alfred Hitchcock's movie "The Birds."

Lake Emerald, in Oakland Park, Florida -US- near Fort Lauderdale.

Shot from my balcony over the lake, Wednesday, December 27, 2006.

See it LARGER,

or 15" x 20".

See WHERE. ( When map appears, click "Hybrid" and "+" sign for best map view.)

These little Silvereyes were looking irresistable as they tucked into the berries. So irresistible that I forgot to look at what the bush was, however thanks to Tattters and Ozymiles for identifying it as a Callicarpa pedunculata - 'Velvet Leaf'.

After lunch at the gardens I spent more than an hour mit Kamera wandering in beautiful autumn weather amongst the birds and bushes.

The gardens are a great hang-out for regular and itinerant birds. Some of the more famous residents are the family of White-winged Choughs that infest the outoor part of the cafe restaurant. Normally they threaten by flying onto or near your table, or swooping 10cm above your head, or lining up on a branch only a metre or two away to look disturbingly Hitchcockian. They will regularly take food from your plate if you leave the table, or even if you look away for too long. But today I had an Anzac biscuit still in my hand on the way to my mouth, when a Chough flew across the table at warp speed right between the two of us, elevation 1 foot, and grabbed the thing out of my hand. According to staff this is a new phase of the war; new measures are required. The Americans are suggesting twenty thousand more troops, I'm not sure.

Un Omaggio al Maestro !

Wanted to make it a bit hitchcockian :)

Happy Sliders Sunday to everyone!

This is a second post-processing for this image. The quote is from Hitchcock because the image looks so Hitchcockian to me.

(....In my most Hitchcockian voice)

I now return you to Shocktober ...

This is my Hitchcockian shot. In a different light, a flock of seagulls can look pretty spooky :-)

Vaguely hitchcockian, this is an example of that phenomenon generally referred to as a "happy accident." I didn't realize the birds were there until I looked at the image on my computer later that day. The next day, I noticed that groups of birds would actually ride around on the horses' backs and would take off as the horses got close to me.

Eaton Centre, Toronto, Canada 2011.

I saw it as I left the shrink's office yesterday morning. I was feeling exhilarated, enraged, and depressed, all at the same time. I decide I'm gonna walk down the stairs instead of taking the elevator, and as I take the steps, what do I see. Is it a downward spiral I have in front of me, or is it just the beauty of light hitting this massive staircase in all those different angles and curves? Suspense. This very Hitchcockian story will continue.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure how the birds ended up being so well defined. They move in odd patterns. I suspect they all just happened to be changing direction as I took this exposure.

When photographing swarms of grackles, I highly recommend wearing machine washable clothing. And a hat.

Several hundred landed in a parking lot very near where I was shooting. Most were on the ground, but a few dozen were on top of a rather unfortunate car. And, there were thousands in the surrounding trees.

By the way, these grackles are known to attack bystanders:

Don't you half expect that at any minute a plane will come shooting at her? ;P

I really like this photo too... Stefanie did a great job at delivering what I had in mind. ;)

This one let me get really close. Then it flew right above my head and I almost peed a little.

Well, I finally snapped and bought a dslr...yay!

This bug was in my room this evening. I composited it on another photo of wood that I took earlier this afternoon. Added some Photoshop lighting...blah, blah!

My morning commute, thick Hitchcockian fog

floor boards...interesting lighting...you know what I was thinking...

I was attacked by a horde of Hitchcockian gulls. Kind of a bummer on the whole attempted "at one with nature" thing.

Hitchcockian moment...

I can't take much artistic credit on this, the gentleman obilgingly walked behind a very large projection screen: just had to have it!

I wanted to recreate the atmosphere of Hitchkock movies...

actually the woman on the background wasn't supposed to be there! but finally I think she matches pretty well in this composition.

This is my attempt to create suspense and dramatic moment. The birds kind of give it a Hitchcockian feel, I hope. Photo taken at Pescadero State Beach, 25km south of Half Moon Bay on a windy and stormy spring day! Perfect weather for dramatic skies! Nikon D810 with 14-24mm at 14mm.

JUST BREATHE is back up and running, and a very special thanks to Emily Schaller for such a warm welcome to Detroit. Photos look awesome and I'm excited to get this project moving forward again - but donations are still needed to get me travelling. Very much looking forward to working with the Rock CF Foundation on some new initiatives. And Shinola watches.

Special thanks to Pornstache at US Border Patrol for holding me up for 45 minutes, and actually asking me "Why doesn't she just get a local photographer?"

This is my attempt at surrealism. When I saw the theme for this week, I thought I wasn’t even going to play. I was going to post a regular picture, but then I started to think about it and had a few ideas, but my limited Photoshop skills got in the way of some of the ideas. I'm glad I decided to try to follow the theme and I am happy it gave me a chance to learn how to do a few things on Photoshop. Now, I want to get a graphic tablet to be kinder to my wrist and elbow which are hurting from all the time spent selecting objects.

I like this one because of its Hitchcockian feel. It is an attempt at an apocalyptic scene (low key apocalypse!). I came up with the title Apocalypso because I thought it captured the apocalyptic scene and "calypso" for the colourful Carribean bird.

For some reason I found this interesting :p
