Being someone who travels a lot for work reasons, I am actually using my current vacations to enjoy the peacefulness of being home: reading my books, watching my DVDs, playing my video games....sleeping. Wow, I've been needing it fo a while now. The title of this image could've alson been "There's no place like home", but I preferred the other cliché...LOL.

This picture has been waiting for a really long time to be uploaded, and so I hope it finds its way into your hearts.

These are community houses built by the government for less privileged families here in Brazil.

My spring break was built around a lot of photography. Thurs-Sat I was in Lake Tahoe to hang w/ Flex and try my best to get a hold on Bonsai Rock. Let’s just say Bonsai Rock won again…the weather was so bad that I only made it down to actually photograph it once…and then I barely made it. I was ¾ of the way to the rock from South Shore to photograph sunrise when I realized I had left my camera in the cabin.

DOH!!!!

I hurried back…only to discover the door was locked.

I was almost positive that Murphy’s law was going to come into play and this sunrise was going to be spectacular…and I would have missed it entirely because I was a retard. I could’ve enjoyed it from the cabin porch, while I sucked on a icicle. I think I’d have just shoved an icicle in my heart if it had been epic.

Rather than mope it up…I beat on Flex’s window to make him let me in. If I was going down, I was at least going to be en-route to capture the sunrise. He woke up after a solid 5 minutes of banging….on came the lights. I hurried back to the front door to get my bag…only he never came.

Apparently, I just triggered his need to use the restroom…because the lights went out and 2-minutes later I was hurrying around the house to bang on the window again.

This time he woke up and I was let in to get my bag.

Thankfully, the sunrise was un-tacular…and the morning was nothing more than a bit of exercise and another notch on my list of failures at that location.

This Tuesday I left with my youngest son to the Alvord Desert. A remote area of Eastern Oregon. You pass nowhere on your way here. The plan was to arrive and then figure out everything else from there. Long rides with 6-yeasr olds are crazy. Not only are they hungry all the time and want snacks…but they play crazy car games. Games like “what if…”

“What if this car caught on fire….what if a shark was chasing you…what if your car blew up…what if we never made it to the Al-bor Dezer?”

When we arrived it was nearing sunset, and thankfully this go around there were clouds…and things looked promising. Due to the remoteness of this area, I was never really sure if I was in the correct area. I saw something that looked like a desert playa…but no access to it…which led me to believe, due to the numerous photos and videos I’ve watched of cars and motorcycles driving on it, I was not in the correct place. I drove on. Then I stopped seeing a playa…which led to thoughts of….oh man….what if we don’t make it to the “Al-bor Dezer?”

I called Oachs who was shopping…to have him do some map work. Thankfully, despite the remoteness…the Alvord has a tremendous cell signal…and I was able to finally figure out that I WAS in the right location…and the playa I saw, was indeed the one I wanted to be on. I just couldn’t find out how to get on to it.

I was really wanting to drive the Pirus at mach speed on the desert playa….and break the hybrid land speed record….but I never found a spot I thought I wouldn’t get stuck in….so I opted to park the ride on the side of the road and walk out on to the playa.

I decided to go photograph first, because the light was happening…and set up camp at a later point. A decision which I would regret….

This shot was from a very cool sunset in a very VERY good location. Aiden played in the mud and ran amuck while I photographed. I really enjoy photography most when I can enjoy it with my kids.

Part 2 in a couple days…I’m off to SF to teach another class with the Aperture Academy.

Flower domes of Gardens by the bay and MBS - Singapore

cho-me.com

The Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Truro, Cornwall is an Anglican cathedral. It was built in the Gothic Revival architectural style fashionable during the period, and is one of only three cathedrals in the United Kingdom with three spires.

The See (or Diocese) of Truro was established in 1876 and the first bishop, Edward White Benson, was consecrated in 1877: this was the first cathedral to be built on a new site in England since Salisbury Cathedral in 1220.

Construction began in 1880 on the site of the 16th century parish church (St Mary the Virgin) to a design by the architect John Loughborough Pearson, a leading figure of the 19th century Gothic Revival. The design combines the Early English style with certain French characteristics, chiefly spires and rose windows. Truro's resemblance to Lincoln Cathedral is not coincidental: Pearson had been appointed as Lincoln's Cathedral architect and the first Bishop of Truro, Edward Benson, had previously been Canon Chancellor at Lincoln. The central tower and spire stands 250 feet tall, while the western towers reach to 200 feet.

The cathedral is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary and as such has no Lady Chapel, which is quite unusual. Because the cathedral is situated in the heart of the city there was little room with houses and shops packed closely about on all sides. In order to accommodate the cathedral it was necessary to bend the building six feet northward.

Two foundation stones were laid in 1880 and the first section of the cathedral was consecrated in 1887. The central tower was completed by 1905 and the building was completed with the opening of the two western towers in 1910. Pearson died in 1897 and the work of his architectural practice was continued by his son, Frank. The Cathedral was the location for the first service of Nine Lessons and Carols, devised by Bishop Edward White Benson for Christmas Eve in 1880.

In 2002 the cathedral embarked on what was hoped to be a fifteen year project to restore the east end, the west front and the central tower and spire. Reliant on available funds, work progresses when possible. Currently the towers are under refurbishment under this plan.

between vineyards and forests on the Moselle lies Beilstein, the Sleeping Beauty of the Moselle.

The village has about 130 residents and is in season daily visited by hundreds of tourists who can see many sights.

Whether "Castle Metternich - Burg Metternich", the old convent or homely half-timbered houses and narrow streets, in Beilstein's a lot to discover.

Meanwhile the entire place is a listed building.

Ive had sometime off work this week. I have wanted to shoot in this Cathedral for some time so i made time to have a few hours in here. Some old darlin came over to me as i was laying on the floor trying to line this up, she thought id fainted. Bless her kind heart for being caring.

What an amazing historic building to browse at your leisure for free or It's £3 to take pictures in here and you can use tripods! I would highly recommend this place as it's so peaceful, the staff here are so helpful and take time to explain any of its history.

And when you start looking at people's hearts instead of their faces, life becomes more clear!

This shot, I captured in the Birmingham Cube; in which inside the building’s central courtyard atrium area is an exclusive portfolio of art pieces by the contemporary artist, Temper.

We now live in the age of sculpture art pieces, that seems to shape our lives wherever we go today!

One of my purple Phalaenopsis orchids opened up into a beautiful bloom just in time for Valentine's Day :)

Happy Valentine's Day dear friends ~

Valentine's Day Trivia

• February 14th was the date of the Roman festival of Lupercalia - where young men held a lottery to decide which girl would be theirs.

• During Medieval times, girls ate unusual foods on St. Valentine's Day to have a dream of their future husband.

• In the middle Ages, people believed that the first unmarried person of the opposite sex you met on the morning of St. Valentine's Day would become your spouse.

• In the middle of the 17th century even married people took a Valentine - not always their legal other half!

• Alexander Graham Bell applied for his patent on the telephone, on the Valentine's Day, 1876.

• In Wales, love spoons of wood were carved and given as gifts on February 14th. Hearts, keys and keyholes formed the favorite theme of decorations on the spoons, which together symbolized- "You unlock my heart!"

• It wasn't until 1537 that St. Valentine's Day was declared an official holiday. England's King Henry VIII declared February 14th a holiday in 1537 for the first time.

• On February 14, 1779, the natives of Hawaii murdered Captain James Cook the great English explorer and navigator.

• Some people believed that if a woman saw a robin-flying overhead on Valentine's Day, it meant she would marry a sailor and if she saw a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very happy. If she saw a goldfinch, she would marry a very rich person.

• The Taj Mahal at Agra, India is perhaps the most splendid gift of love. It was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beautiful wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Work on the Taj began in 1634 and continued for almost 22 years. It took the labor of 20,000 workers from all over India and Central Asia.

• In England, the Romans, who had taken over the country, had introduced a pagan fertility festival held every February 14. After the Romans left England, Pope Gelsius, who established St. Valentine's Day as a celebration of love in 496 A.D abolished the pagan ritual.

We build it up, we tear it down

We leave our pieces on the ground

We are lost and we're falling

A prayer for Manchester

God of compassion,

you hear the cries of all who are in trouble or distress;

accept our prayers for those whose lives are affected by the bombing in Manchester;

We pray especially for those suddenly facing a future without a child, parent or loved one,

young ones who are in deep distress

those who are injured, traumatised or awaiting news

strengthen them in their hour of need,

grant them perseverance and courage to face the future

and be to them a firm foundation on which to build their lives;

this we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

French chateau located in the commune of Chambord, in the department of Loir-et-Cher in the Center-Loire Valley region.

Built in the heart of the largest closed forest park in Europe (about 50 km2 surrounded by a wall of 32 km long), it is the largest of the castles of the Loire. It benefits from a pleasure garden and a hunting park classified historical monuments.

The site first hosted a feudal mound, as well as the old castle of the counts of Blois. The origin of the present castle dates back to the 16th century and to the reign of the French king Francis I who oversees its construction from 1519.

The castle and its estate are inscribed on the World Heritage List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Newburgh is a large stone-built village on the wide sandy estuary of the River Ythan, close to the point at which it is bridged by the A975. he origins of the village date back to 1261 when a charter was drawn up by Lord Sinclair establishing a settlement here. A little later it acquired the Chapel of the Holy Rood and St Thomas the Martyr in Inch Road. The Chapel is long gone, but the Udny Family Mausoleum which formed part of it can still be seen in the Holyrood Cemetery. art of the name of the original chapel also survives, in the imposing Holyrood Chapel on Main Street. This was originally built as a school in 1838, and the clock tower was added in 1892. The village itself developed as a centre for salmon fishing, and later as a small port. By the 1850s there was a steady traffic of boats and barges calling at the newly built quays on the River Ythan. And by the 1880s there was a small fleet of sailing vessels based here, alongside a dozen resident fishing boats. A little earlier, in 1828, Newburgh became the first port in Scotland to have a Lifeboat Station, then called the Shipwreck Institution. The RNLI, as the Institution became, based a lifeboat in Newburgh until 1961, when it moved to Peterhead. In the 1950s Newburgh remained an active port with quays and a mill. Much of its economic base had declined by 1970, but the corner was turned - as with so many settlements in north east Scotland - with the discovery of oil under the North Sea. Newburgh, with its attractive setting and within commuting range of both Aberdeen and Peterhead rapidly became a desirable place to live. Today's Newburgh is an active and thriving settlement. At its centre is the Udny Arms Hotel providing accommodation, great views over the River Ythan, and an excellent restaurant. Beyond the River Ythan lies one of the oddest landscapes in Britain. Forvie Sands comprises an area of dunes some three miles long and a mile wide. At its heart are the remains of Forvie Kirk, built in the 1100s. This is all that can now be seen of the village of Forvie, once a thriving community but buried by shifting dunes during a storm in 1413. www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/newburgh/newburgh/

Sands of Forvie Nature Reserve: www.visitscotland.com/info/towns-villages/forvie-national... Shifting sands and seabirds The stark beauty of empty sand dunes is complemented by the call of eider ducks, wafting like gentle gossiping across the Ythan estuary. With the constant shifting of the dunes, layers of history have come and gone, revealing the half buried remains of a twelfth century church. Bird life is plentiful and you can watch the summer acrobatics of diving terns or the determined stabbing of the carrot-coloured beaks of wading oystercatchers.

deep in the woods, there is a dark place, a dark, dark place where a lonely man has built layer upon layer upon layer, protecting his heart, each layer sinking his heart further and further into the darkness and further and further from the light.

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris

Sacré-Cœur, Paris

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, commonly known as Sacré-Cœur Basilica and often simply Sacré-Cœur, is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Paris, France.

In 1870, war broke out between France and Germany.

The Council that was being held in the Vatican at the time was suspended and the Pope, no longer under the protection of French troops, considered himself a prisoner within the Vatican.

France was facing defeat and partially occupied by German troops. The initiative of Alexandre Legentil and Hubert Rohault de Fleury was a spiritual one. They vowed to build a church dedicated to the Sacred Heart “as reparation” (i.e. as penance for infidelity and sin) for they held that the misfortunes of France had spiritual rather than political causes.

At the end of 1872 Cardinal Guibert, Archbishop of Paris, approved the vow and chose Montmartre.

At the end of 1873 he got the French Parliament to pass a law declaring that the Basilica was in the public interest, thereby making the land available for the construction of a church.

At the time the construction of a Basilica dedicated to the Sacred Heart contrasted with a series of Basilicas dedicated to the Virgin Mary during the same period in Lourdes, Notre-Dame de Fourvière in Lyon and Notre-Dame de la Garde in Marseilles.

The work was funded from donations - in many cases modest - collected throughout France, the names of the donors being carved in the stone.

Since October 2003, Gran Meliá Fénix has been part of the most prestigious hotel association in the world, The Leading Hotels of The World

=

The 5 stars were awarded in 2004

=

Architectural design: Fernando Cánovas del Castillo (Opened: September 1953)

=

The Gran Meliá Fénix is elegant and classical yet also truly modern. The emblematic history of the hotel is also marked by the people who chose its elegant facilities for their stay in Madrid.

=

Since it opened in 1953, this exclusive hotel has been chosen by prestigious guests from all walks of life: culture, politics, music, fashion, cinema and sport. Known as the “the excellence of Madrid”, “the hotel of the nobility” and “the Beatles’ hotel”, the Gran Meliá Fénix is an oasis of tranquillity right in the heart of the Spanish capital (Plaza Colón).

=

The select and discreet atmosphere, elegant lounges and richly decorated and contrasting rooms, blending traditional luxury with a surprising modern flair, have been the perfect setting for famous celebrities such as Rita Hayworth, Gloria Swanson, Cary Grant and Charles Bronson, amongst many, many others.

=

A major event for the city and the hotel was the historic visit to Spain by The Beatles on 1 July, 1965. The Fab Four from Liverpool gave a crowded press conference at the Gran Meliá Fénix before their only concert in Madrid, and then stayed in four of its luxury suites.

=

Since then, the Gran Meliá Fénix has become a landmark in the Spanish capital, and a meeting point at the very highest level. Under its spectacular modernist dome there have been numerous meetings between important politicians, prominent Spanish and international businessmen and women, and members of the world’s royal families.

=

A thorough renovation has now made this charismatic hotel the hotel chosen by the stars of the 21st century, while retaining all of the essential charm of its origins that has made it a “listed building” to protect the city heritage.

=

Select visitors such as Queen Noor of Jordan, Prince Felipe and Princess Elena de Borbón, Bill Clinton, Antonia Banderas, Chayanne, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Cardinale, Rafael Nadal and David Beckham have all enjoyed the Gran Meliá experience.

=

Discover the Gran Meliá Fénix. Memorable moments are created by very special places.

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, commonly known as Sacré-Cœur Basilica and often simply Sacré-Cœur (French: Basilique du Sacré-Cœur, pronounced [sakʁe kœʁ]), is a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Paris, France. A popular landmark, the basilica is located at the summit of the butte Montmartre, the highest point in the city. Sacré-Cœur is a double monument, political and cultural, both a national penance for the defeat of France in the 1871 Franco-Prussian War and the socialist Paris Commune of 1871 crowning its most rebellious neighborhood, and an embodiment of conservative moral order, publicly dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which was an increasingly popular vision of a loving and sympathetic Christ.

The Sacré-Cœur Basilica was designed by Paul Abadie. Construction began in 1875 and was finished in 1914. It was consecrated after the end of World War I in 1919.

After class, I saw sunset went down behind of Heart Building. I ran and looked for good spot before capture them. Now I did it. It's very beautiful.

And if I built this fortress around your heart

Encircled you in trenches and barbed wire

Then let me build a bridge

For I cannot fill the chasm

And let me set the battlements on fire

Singapore river sits right in the middle of this image. The tall highrise buildings directly behind the river and to image left is Singapore's business and financial district. That row of low shophouses right by Singapore river is the Boat Quay area. The large open field in the foreground is the Padang, and the building with that round, disc-shaped top is the Singapore Supreme Court buidling.

Ghent is full of so many wonderful buildings but for me the highlight of the city was the extraordinary Belltower

The 91-metre-tall belfry of Ghent is one of three medieval towers that overlook the old city centre Its height makes it the tallest belfry in Belgium. Construction of the tower began in 1313 after a design by master mason Jan van Haelst. His plans are still preserved in the Ghent City Museum. After continuing intermittently through wars, plagues and political turmoil, the work reached completion in 1380. It was near the end of this period that the gilded dragon, brought from Bruges, assumed its place atop the tower. The uppermost parts of the building have been rebuilt several times, in part to accommodate the growing number of bells.

In a different kind of mood working with images of brick and concrete layered with coins and a wavy building tile up from Seoul. Sometimes images come in a batch and this is no exception except I'm still sorting this one out. :) This image has been a bit of a struggle for me and I'm still apprehensive about it, funny how I get that way with some of these but I've "spent" a bit of time with it and I'm calling it done for now. I posted a lighter version and have replaced it with this one that I've darkened a bit and changed slightly to bring up the coins (South Korean Wons).

Built in 1133, Missenden Abbey remained a religious house for nearly 400 years. In 1536 the Abbey and its grounds were sold to new owners. Missenden Abbey then became a country mansion residence for a succession of families until 1946, when it was sold to Buckinghamshire County Council for use as an adult learning facility.

My thanks to you, my Flickr friends, for taking the time to look and for your comments, faves and support, which is always appreciated and never taken for granted!

Blondie - Heart of Glass

The Parish Church of St. John the Baptist is the largest of the churches in the Benefice. Situated in Church Street, in the heart of the village of Somersham, the church stands on a site which in all probability has been consecrated for Christian worship since the second half of the seventh century. The current building though dates from the period between 1250 and 1300 and is likely to have been built and paid-for by one of the bishops living in the (now disappeared) Bishops Palace which was sited only a few hundred yards from where the church now stands

While working in Tobago as a Divemaster this wonderful beautiful wild dog found me at the beach where I was working. The locals told me to be aware of this dog, that he was a monster and a killer etc. They beat him with brooms and sticks, even throwing stones at him. Upset and determined to prove them wrong and enlighten them regarding animals and their behaviour, I became friends with this dog. He came back to visit me every day for a week. He then started to walk with me after I finished work every day. A little bit longer each day he finally had built up the courage to go all the way home with me. I let him inside, leaving all doors and gates open in case he wanted to leave. After a while of scoping the place out we both realized he wasn´t going to leave. He found a place next to my bed and just fell asleep (really crashed) I left him alone and he slept comfortably for 16 hours straight. I felt humbled and honored beeing chosen and trusted by this wild creature. Since that moment we have been inseparable. Even the locals grew to like him or accept him. After a year of Carribbean Paradise it was time for me to go back to Sweden. Obviously I could or would never leave him behind to a cruel destiny and a certain death, never in my life. So this is him DJANGO in Sweden, giving all of us so much love and laughter, a true original that dog ;-)

I offered him comfort, security and a home. What he gave me back was the best friend I could ever ask for. We have been through so much together since that first night, traveling different continents, lots of adventures, riding scooter together haha, the looks we got was priceless :D and we have so much more to do..

This office building located at 155 S. Miami Avenue was formerly known as The Justice Building. Located in the heart of downtown Miami, just off the I-95 ramp, the building is one of the few downtown office properties to offer its tenants on-site parking. In 2011 the building underwent extensive renovations to its entrance, lobby, elevators, and restrooms.

I'm looking at you through the glass

Don't know how much time has passed

Oh God, it feels like forever

But no one ever tells you that forever feels like home

Sitting all alone inside your head

'Cause I'm looking at you through the glass

Don't know how much time has passed

All I know is that it feels like forever

When no one ever tells you that forever feels like home

Sitting all alone inside your head

How do you feel? That is the question

But I forget, you don't expect an easy answer

When something like a soul becomes initialized

And folded up like paper dolls and little notes

You can't expect a bit of hope

And while you're outside looking in

Describing what you see

Remember what you're staring at is me

'Cause I'm looking at you through the glass

Don't know how much time has passed

All I know is that it feels like forever

When no one ever tells you that forever feels like home

Sitting all alone inside your head

How much is real? So much to question

An epidemic of the mannequins

Contaminating everything

When thought came from the heart

It never did right from the start

Just listen to the noises

(No more sad voices)

Before you tell yourself

It's just a different scene

Remember it's just different from what you've seen

I'm looking at you through the glass

Don't know how much time has passed

And all I know is that it feels like forever

When no one ever tells you that forever feels like home

Sitting all alone inside your head

'Cause I'm looking at you through the glass

Don't know how much time has passed

All I know is that it feels like forever

When no one ever tells you that forever feels like home

Sitting all alone inside your head

And it's the stars

The stars that shine for you

And it's the stars

The stars that lie to you

And it's the stars

The stars that shine for you

And it's the stars

The stars that lie to you

I'm looking at you through the glass

Sufit tego kościoła pokrywa płócienne malowidło przedstawiające wydarzenia z końca Wojny Trzynastoletniej, kiedy to w Stegnie prowadzono pertraktacje pokojowe. Jest to największy obraz w Polsce i jeden z największych w Europie. Wymiary płótna to 35 na 18 m. Dzieło zostało przytwierdzone specjalnymi gwoździami do drewnianej przybitki. Artysta swoją pracę rozpoczął 5 lipca, a skończył w październiku 1688 roku.

Unikatowe wyposażenie kościoła stanowi największy model statku w Polsce. Jest on darem załogi w podzięce za cudem uratowane życie.
