Another "going around during lunch time with my fisheye" shot. This is the entrance of the offices of Costa cruises (Costa Crociere).

It was a very noisy HDR, I had to strongly remove the noise.

This one is from Cockle Bay in Sydney Harbour. It was really still on the waters surface before the storm rolled in and I made this shot with my Nikon D800 on a tripod right on the waters edge. I call it "The Mirrored City", but it's a bit like a city in the clouds. I'm moving to Sydney this month so I'm excited for all the great photo locations in the area :-)

My new website is a great learning tool as it has all the camera settings and google maps location. In many instances I also share the software I used :-)

So this vantage point is taken from the very centre of Surfer's Paradise looking south and south-west over the Gold Coast Australia. There are plenty of small details in this composition so a large print would be great as you could step in an admire the tiny houses with their river front properties, for example, or you could stand back and take in the entire vista.

About:

After test driving Nik HDR Efex Pro for a while and the trial stopped working, I discovered Photomatix has an upgrade available to V4 and it's free for current V3 users! Well done HDRSoft, really good service!

I thought let me process a picture of Scotland, just took a random picture I would put through Photomatix, and to be honest a first sight it works the same, a little bit faster, user settings have a preview now, ghost reduction is semi manual or automatic (took the bracketed shots twice through the process, this is through the semi manual which is better (marginally noticable on the arrows on the road on the full resolution files)

Conclusion: I'm going to stick with Photomatix for a while

The picture itself: On the road to Eilean Donan castle the weather was this all day, which is kind of nice, gives nice dramatic skies and lots of color in HDR shots. This is from a war memorial next to the main road where I shot some graveyard pictures and this war memorial is for the memory of the fallen heroes during WWI

On the left you can see the one of the five sisters of Kintail (mountain on the left = 'sgurr na maroich'), got some nice panorama still lying around...

Technical stuff:

Exposure: 1/30 sec at f/11 at -1 EV (basic shot, other shots are at -3EV and +1EV)

Taken with: Nikon D90 and 10-20 mm f/4-5.6 at 11

HDR processed in Photomatix 4

Noise reduction in Nik Dfine (also testdriving this, getting to get it the way I like, is better than Lightroom because of the selective nature you can apply, only noise reduction on the gray color range, the rest was not affected)

A little bit of sharpening in Lightroom

These geometric patterns are found on a small stretch of rock pools on the coast of the Tasmanian peninsula near eaglehawk neck, Australia. This type of formation, a tessellated pavement, is very rare... and has to have very specific conditions for it to form. They are pretty amazing :-)

color version

Background

When I shot these photos, I did not have a timer cable release with me. If I were to shoot these at a small aperture, I would have to set the camera on bulb while keeping my finger on the shutter release for the entire exposure. To minimize the risk of completely ruining the photos, I've decided to vary the aperture values for the different exposures instead of varying the time and keeping a constant aperture value.

HDR Processing

Note that it is generally not recommended that you vary the aperture values for images intended for HDR (Wikipedia: High dynamic imaging) processing. If you use software like Photomatix to perform tone-mapping, for example, the varying levels of focus on the photo will create blurry results. I have had to apply a bit more USM (Wikipedia: Unsharp Mask) than usual for this image. And if you view large, you can see that the grains are quite visible.

HDR Results

I am happy with the HDR result though--the wider aperture gave it enough exposure to show the golden reflection under the bridge, and the small aperture contribute to the oh-so-gorgeous star bursts from the lights.

Black + White Processing

By using Photoshop's channel mixer for the black and white conversion, I was able to manipulate the the local contrast further. The absence of color united the tonal values of the two orthogonal axis of the bridge. The overall composition seems to have improved, and now looks like a giant extruded plus sign with very heavy industrial ornaments.

B+W Results

The result is very rewarding and I'd like to thank Moxette for her suggestion to process this as a black and white photograph. :)

So, I stood there with my camera on the tripod, ready to take a photo of the beautiful path lightened by lampposts... then just as I was to shoot, two people came walking and I was like "stay calm, stay calm" and still took the photo (just for the fun of it) and after a short wait, when they were out of sight, I could finally take a photo of the path without people in it... but then I came home and saw the photo with the people in it and because the man was walking faster than the woman, it looks like she is chased by some sort of paranormal energy... it looks quite spooky and I do love spooky when it's safe ;)

My husband told me that he spent one year here as as student when it was a school house in Cirali..after than it was use as a bakery and now it is just someones little summer house on the beach at Cirali.

My first attempts at HDR...

I have downloaded the trail version of Photomatix....to try it out for awhile to see if I like it or not...sorry for the watermarks on the photos but this is just a test using HDR....I did take many bracketed photos over the weekend as the clouds and lights seemed to be the perfect chance to test this out....

After trying out a few of these images in HDR I am now seriously considering this program ..because the effects are so cool especially on cloudy days to bring out colors and details etc.

This is a three exposure HDR image.

Do you like this version ??? I may invest in the program a little bit down the road..

Me

Shot at near Kallang (i don't know exactly the name of the place some say Pebble Bay and some say not, very confusing) in Singapore around 7:15 PM, I was just walking back home from the flyer on the way I saw this blue the soft evening light from the sky reflects over the water and the lights on the buildings over the other side of the river started glowing it was very catchy for my eyes luckily I had my camera with me on the spot then I just framed it as usual…

Usual 3EV (-2.0, +0.0, +2.0) shot, HDR and manually blended two images 40% and 46%, Curves, Levels, Hue/Saturation Master/yellow/blue, Used unsharp mask (as always) on the background layer and added black strips…18-70mm sony lens, ISO 100, Max aperture F5.0 Lens focal length 30.0mm, Shutter speed 1/2sec, F number F5.0 Exposure correction value +0.0 EV, Flash not used, on a tripod.

I found this shrine whilst exploring at night with my camera. There were people roaming amongst the gardens and temples interacting with their surroundings. A group was ringing these bells by shaking these giant thick ropes that were hanging down off them and the sounds chimed throughout the area.

Fast Fact

The Royal and Pontifical University of Santo Tomas (UST), is considered to be the premier Catholic University of the Philippines and the oldest existing university in Asia. In Spanish, it is referred to A La Real y Pontificia Universidad de Santo Tomas de Aquino Universidad Católica de Filipinas. King Charles III of Spain bestowed the title “Royal” on 1785; “Pontifical” by Pope Leo XIII on 1902 through his constitution, Quae Mari Sinico and Pope Pius XII designated “Appellative "The Catholic University of the Philippines" on 1947.

It is also the largest Catholic university in the world in a single campus based on student enrollment. It was established through the efforts of Bishop Miguel de Benavides, the third Archbishop of Manila. Upon Benavides’ death in July 1605, the bishop bestowed P1,500 and his personal library for the setting up of a “Seminary-College” intended for the preparation of young men for the priesthood. The funds and the personal library became the core of UST and its library.

It was on 28 April 1611, when the Colegio de Nuestra Señora del Santísimo Rosario was established from Benavides’ library. The institution was late renamed Colegio de Santo Tomas. On 20 November 1645, it was promoted to a university by Pope Innocent X.

To me "Gap Bluff" looks like a giant puzzle that needs putting back together and all the pieces have just toppled over. This amazing natural formation is a mere 15 minutes drive from the city CBD on the south side of the Harbour. There is plenty to do in this area and lots to see and bondi beach is only 5 minutes further down the coast. Sydney keeps on blowing my mind at how beautiful it can be.

My time in Japan was only a week and whilst there I had a rail pass which allows you unlimited travel on their trains, including their famous bullet train system. If you go there I highly recommend getting one :-) I traveled down to Kyoto and stayed in the Gion District known for it's Geisha, traditional architecture and food and a slower paced Japanese lifestyle compared to Tokyo.

Pictured here is Kiyomizu-dera Temple, world heritage listed, which I visited at sunset. After exploring along with everyone else who I found to be amazingly polite like the rest of the country I setup to capture the scene. I waited till the sun was completely gone and the moon lit the clouds from behind to capture this temple from a vantage point above the tree line. Far off in the distance you can See Kyoto in the valley which runs along a river and has lots of little canals that go through the city. Many of the streets are cobbled and exploring them is like stepping into the past, a truly exciting experience and cant wait to return again.
