Winter colors coupled with a magnificent sky on a 80 degree Texas afternoon in February....

An HDR three photo blended image using Photomatix software for the blending.

www.hdrsoft.com

I wasn't satisfied with the single exposures I was getting at this point in the sunrise yesterday, so I combined 3 exposures to produce this result. In a single exposure some of the highlight detail was getting lost in blocks of color, and the foreground rocks were too black as well, so I ran three exposures through Photomatix HDR software to recover the highlight and shadow detail.

Ironically, High Dynamic Range (HDR) software has a reputation for producing low dynamic range images, when heavy-handed use leads to garish images with large solid splotches of color with lost detail. That reputation is not entirely deserved though, since careful use can often result in highlight and shadow detail being improved instead of destroyed.

Exposure and processing details -

Canon 5D Mark III with 16-35mm lens at 24mm focal length

Cokin #121 3-stop graduated neutral density filter

Bracketed exposures of .5, 1.3 and 3.2 seconds, f/16 at ISO 100

Post-processed in Adobe Lightroom 5.2, Photomatix 5.0

White balance was set to 5412. I adjusted exposure, brightness, whites and shadows (contrast, clarity, vibrance, saturation were all left at 0), then I used the Lightroom plug-in from HDRsoft to create an HDR file and transfer a 16-bit TIFF file back to Lightroom.

This cute little lighthouse was is on the waters edge of Cremorne and its an active light and the sister of Bradleys Head Light. This was taken just after sunset during blue hour with a storm coming into Sydney from the west.

You've gotta see it LARGE on black!

Captured with a Canon EOS 30D and a Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM lens.

Location: Tanner Bridge Road, Jefferson City, Missouri

This was a planned HDR scene I captured about a year ago. I've been spending a lot of time with Photoshop CS4 and ACR 5 lately and thought about re-working this piece and I'm glad I did. I have a tutorial about how I created the original HDR image here; however, after using my new process, I need to update the steps.

In short, I used to simply load my Canon 30D RAW files directly into Photomatix, tone map, then save as 16bit tiff. Then load the 16bit tiff into Photoshop to do further enhancing such as noise removal.

Now I process each RAW in ACR 5, apply Noiseware Pro NR and save each frame as a 16bit tiff, then I open each tiff with Photomatix, merge, tone map, save again as 16bit tiff, open in Photoshop, apply default Noiseware Pro NR, USM (radius 1.1, amt: 40%), then save as 8bit jpg, which is what you see above. This rendition is far better than my first version (much cleaner, sharper, and the tonal depth is better too).

Same location of one of my previous pictures, different spot and camera: this is taken with a compact Canon S90.

I spent a lot of time waiting for the wave, and I chose this angle to reflect it on the water.

Here is another one of The Halloween Tree in Frontierland.

I processed this using the 32-bit HDRsoft plug-in for Lightroom. It makes it a lot easier than using Photomatix, but also has a slightly different look. I used Topaz Adjust, Nik Color Efex and Photoshop to add some style and pull out some details.

Hitchinbrooke (Rockburn), Quebec, Canada

HDR treatment made with HDRSoft Lr6 Plugin.

I love how offbeat and branded this is. So many wooden signs... and they're all advertising the same thing. Stanley Oasis - "8 & 3/4th wonder of the world", "Home of the Original Radiator Springs", "Mysterious and Miraculous World Famous" - This is it!

I want to share something with all of you fellow HDR enthusiasts. If you are using Nik Software or Photomatix, you have good software - I used to use both - but not the best. What really makes great photos is the HDRsoft Merge to 32-bit HDR Plugin for lightroom. You get an unparalleled level of detail and quality. You also get an opportunity to REALLY tweak an image the way you want to - the controls are a lot clearer in Lightroom than the other two softwares (because you use them for EVERYTHING - you just get more range). And finally, the biggest draw is that it's only $30 - cheaper than a decent lens filter! I really recommend it for anyone looking for better HDR software!

This is a -2/0/+2 HDR Merge, edited for color and clarity in Photoshop along with Nik Color Efex Pro filters.

A famous Landmark in HDR then converted into a black and white. I took this shot just after sunset so that there was ample light to bring out the surrounding scenery and not just light from man made sources which can often make HDR muggy.

Shot with Nikon D800 + Nikkor 14-24mm @ 16mm. A 5 series HDR bracket converted into toned black and white. Also lots of small adjustments made throughout the image to bring balance to it.

I revisited this HDR image sequence to see if I had learned anything since I first started experimenting with HDR imagery. I used Photo Shop CS3 for all the work starting with HDR merge and basic tone mapping using the local adaptation option. Afterward, I used a variety of adjustments layers including exposure, levels and photo filter. It looks a bit better than the one I processed in 2009. However, photomatix HDR software does a better job of tone mapping.

The kind & generous Ron from hdrsoft have invited me to become a partner & affiliate of their software - Photomatix Pro. I guess with a photostream as awesome as mine, its hard not to be impressed by anyone lol! :P Seriously i'm only jokin'!! Really a big thanks for the offer Ron! :))

Let's go straight to the point. I have a Photomatix code for you hdr fanatics out there ! If you have been thinking of buying yourself a copy of Photomatix Pro all along...this might just be the right time to do so! :P (haha! Just kiddin' I'm no salesman here.. guess I watch too many TV commercials :P) I know most of my flickrs friends here are already using photomatix.. that is just too bad too sad :P This is especially for those hdr lovers out there who have been (quietly) following my photostream & wish to kick off this new found interest ;)

Here's the important part!

====================

Now you can get a fifteen percent off any photomatix software (both Windows & Mac) just by entering -> “A R T I E N G 1 5” (no spacing between letters :)) in the coupon code box of the Photomatix purchase website. With that money u can save, you can also treat yourself to another awesome dinner & tell yourself how good life is! haha! Btw this code is valid from 06 August 2009 to 06 August 2013 so lots of time to think about it :)

Of coz..before you decide to part with your hard-earned cash (like i always do :P), you should always download a free trial version of Photomatix from w w w . h d r s o f t . c o m to play around & see if you like it. Beware tho.. it can be addictive! :P

Last but not least, TGIF!!!!! Its party time! Hope everyone has a wonderful end to the week & a lovely weekend!

HDR Bracket shot with Nikon D800. Im pretty happy with the colours I got. It took me a long time to edit this image because each building required my individual attention for each layer of the HDR editing process. I wanted even the fine details to be correct exposure, e.g single balconies on buildings which you can zoom right in on with the Nikon D800, so the image ended up being a 2-3 hour edit.

Opening in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge is likely the most recognizable landmark from the west coast of the United States.

I processed this with the HDRsoft 32-bit HDR plug-in for Lightroom. Then did almost all of the processing within Lightroom. I had to go to Photoshop to clone out all the light trails from air traffic and a few stars. Sticking to Lightroom has sped up my processing quite a bit. I can usually finish processing 1 or 2 images a night, last night I went exclusively with the 32-bit HDR plug-in and Lightroom for almost all of my processing and I managed to get through 5 images.

There are a handful of effects I didn't use since I didn't open Nik Color Efex, and I missed out on some of the look that comes from Photomatix, but the 32-bit process is really clean and super fast. I think I'll keep flipping back and forth between Photomatix and the 32-bit plug-in, they're both fun ways to process images. Next up for me is learning techniques for Luminance Mask HDRs.

For best effect, I recommend viewing this image Large on a White Background

Ma is a Japanese word which can be roughly translated as "gap", "space", "pause" or as "the space between two structural parts." In Japanese, ma suggests interval. It is best described as a consciousness of place, not in the sense of an enclosed three-dimensional entity, but the simultaneous awareness of form and non-form deriving from an intensification of vision.

Ma is the thing that takes place in the imagination of the human who experiences these elements. Therefore ma can be defined as experiential place understood with emphasis on interval.

There is no equivalent single word term for Ma in the English language. Sad, but true.

In composing this, I recalled the extraordinary and controversial work of John Cage with his composition 4'33" wherein the three movements are performed without a single note being played, allowing it to be perceived as the sounds of the environment that the listeners hear while it is performed

Thirty spokes meet in the hub,

I'm really happy with how the treatment of this harsh lighting turned out as it is an uphill battle producing a HDR from this time of the day, but this one ended up vibrant and glowing.

This amazing Bamboo Forest is located just a short train ride outside of Kyoto, and its just like a surreal dream. I'll never forget my visit because it was raining so heavy that I had to buy myself an umbrella to explore the area. If you are only in a place once, you can't let a little rain stop you from enjoying it.

I battled the elements with my nikon D800 + nikkor 14-24mm on my tripod holding the umbrella over my camera whilst I got soaked, had to get my priorities right ! ... I had an amazing rain jacket but was wearing jeans and they seemed to weigh about 20kg full of water. Hudson type locomotive number 3450 was designed for high speed passenger service, and was the first of ten similar 4-6-4 locomotives built for Santa Fe in 1927 at a cost of $73,735.60 each. In the early days of its life, number 3450 charged across the Midwestern plains leading sleek transcontinental passenger trains with 73-inch driving wheels and a coal burning fire box. It was rebuilt in 1937 with 79-inch drivers and was converted to burn oil to increase its speed to over 100 mph. It hauled Santa Fe's Fast Mail Express, Scout, California Limited, Grand Canyon and Chief between Chicago & Colorado.

This was shot at 5:45am 06/09/2012 looking across Sydney Harbour. Can you spot your house ? You can see the harbour Bridge just to the left of centre on the horizon and the Sydney CBD on the far left.

In the centre is my Mecca the "Art Gallery of New South Wales" (AGNSW for short) where I've spent many an hour walking, staring and pondering creation.... It helped me expand my mind to think outside the square. Artist's which I recall really having an effect on my artistic development from AGNSW were Yves Klein, Brett Whiteley, Francis Bacon and Roy DeMaistre. What I liked about the gallery the most was that it dedicated an entire level to Australian painters and it made me proud of what our country has produced and achieved as a culture

This image was made from 3 exposure Jpegs (straight from camera) into Photomatix and then Tonemapped.

Well it looks like I sparked a lil debate in my last post about what file format to import into Photomatix.

If you are an HDR photograper and use Photomatix I suggest you take 5-10 minutes and go enrich your brain and read their Tips & Tricks

its amazing what you can learn and learn it directly from them and not someone elses blog.

This was taken directly from their site-

Do I need to process bracketed RAW files to TIFF format first?

The answer depends on your needs and preferences. If the quality of raw demosaicing/debayering or proper white balance adjustments are important to you, it is better to first process your bracketed RAW files in your favorite RAW converter, and then combine the converted TIFF or JPEG files in Photomatix. Additionally, Photomatix transfers less metadata when the source files are RAWs than when they are TIFFs or JPEGs.

When generating an HDR image, having Photomatix directly process the RAW files is theoretically better for the accuracy of the 32-bit HDR image produced -- the data in RAW files represent the linear luminance values captured by the camera sensors, which is exactly what is needed for an HDR image. Also, the calculation of HDR values can rely on the exposure information retrieved from EXIF data when RAW files are used.

However, the RAW conversion of Photomatix Pro and Photomatix Light is not as full-fledged and sophisticated as the RAW conversion done in Photoshop, Lightroom, Aperture, Bibble, DxO or other applications specialized in RAW conversion. Note that if you have Lightroom and Photomatix Pro, it is easy to integrate both processes with the free Lightroom Export Plug-In to Photomatix Pro.

Important note: When using a RAW converter with files intended for being merged into HDR, you should disable sharpening and uncheck all tonal and exposure-related automatic settings. That is, the Exposure adjustment setting but also adjustments for contrast, shadow and similar should be set to zero. This also applies to the Black setting which should be set to zero.

The above does not apply to files intended for Exposure Fusion, though. For Exposure Fusion, it is better to process your RAW files using the auto-settings of the RAW converter.

As a side note: Though shooting in RAW is definitely better than shooting in jpeg for the dynamic range, this is not really relevant anymore when several exposures are used -- if your bracketed shots properly cover the scene's dynamic range, jpegs will work as well as RAWs for creating an HDR image.

Thanks for stopping by.

I hope you all have a great weekend and come back Monday with some great shots!!

So many are asking me about Photomatix HDR. So here are the HDR facts and some guidance.

HDR stands for high dynamic range. You can get more information from www.hdrsoft.com. There's also a flickr group HDR ( flickr.com/groups/hdr/ ) that is focused with this new technique. Photoshop CS2 has HDR rendering too but my preference is to use Phtotomatix.

Now, this is not a replacement for graphic software like Photoshop. HDR is using multiexposure pictures and blending them into one great picture. But still, it all depends on the person who is using Photomatix. Like you either want more sugar or less for your coffee I guess.

HDR can be very good and very addictive. And take care ...

I really love the sonset of 26th December, so I share another shot of these marvellous clouds.

Do you see the strange creature with the ribs? tag it :-)

This is one of the Alpine huts built to provide shelter for hikers on the overland trail from lake St. Claire to Cradle Mountain. It's elevation is about 1250m and the winds are icy cold up here in Winter. As soon as the sun drops behind the mountains the temperature plummets. This was shot at about 4 in the afternoon and waiting for sunset at 5:10 would have been dangerous without better suited gear as the hike back down to Lake Dove is at least 90 minutes even on the steeper track, which I took. Great experience to be up here, but could have gotten better weather ! Next time :-P

This is the place to burn money in Tokyo and its called Ginza. All the wealthy and attractive people of Japan shop here... and I have to admit sometimes work can be really hard on me ;-)

I took a long exposure composition of the Georgio Armani and Dior stores whilst giving it depth by positioning my the view right down just one of the shopping alleys of this district.
