This lovely cabinet card is another swap meet find. It was labeled "Gym costumes about 1888" on the reverse probably no more than a couple of decades later by the look of the writing. I love the setup of a studio with the very realistic-looking grass and fence with the rather crudely painted flowers in the corner of the backdrop (though it's possible that their detail was just washed out by the flash)
I have to say, those gym costumes, while quite nice-looking, don't seem like the most comfortable things to exercise in. even without the necklaces that all the girls are wearing (which were probably a special addition for the portrait), I would be wary of doing anything that might make them dirty or worn. Although, I don't think they were doing incredibly strenuous activities. I believe the second girl from our left is holding a table tennis paddle or something of the like, so that's probably more along the lines of what they were playing in her grade at least. I may be wrong, but the girl look like they may be of slightly different ages. In fact, they look like they may all be in the same family. I see a lot of resemblance between them and they do all have the same hair cut. They could well be sisters.

I'm in pretty good shape in my mid-30's, but I wasn't very athletic when I was growing up.
I couldn't shoot hoops to save my life. I was no good at running track, and I was the opposite of muscular. I'd hang with Janine, Raul and Kenya, doing anything to pass that one hour of gym class without actually having to prove to my peers that I had any athletic prowess whatsoever.
