"Embrace me, my sweet embraceable you; Embrace me, you irreplaceable you"
The spoonbills were in high breeding season and putting on quite the show.
Just got back from a wonderful vacation down in Texas to see my family. Spent a week in Port Aransas along the Gulf of Mexico. What a great little town. I loved all the pink, blue, yellow and purple houses they have. Very quaint town (and excellent seafood - amazing crabcakes at Virginias on the Bay) This picture is for my wonderful sister who so bravely got up with me at the crack of dawn to keep me company while I shot. Then after I got done shooting, we went shell hunting along the coast. Got some nice ones for her collection. Thanks Sis - Love ya!!!!

The surf was strong and the sea oats were blowing in the breeze on Santa Rosa Island between Pensacola Beach and Gulf Islands National Seashore, Florida. Tropical Storm Debbie was churning out in the Gulf
Roseate spoonbills were picky about which birds they shared perches with, part of the whole breeding season behavior in spring 2011.
Somewhere, behind those storm clouds ... the first cold blast patiently awaits to come ashore ...
Hope your new year is off to a great start!
Located on Santa Rosa Island, one of the longest barrier islands in the world, Pensacola Beach has an old Florida feel with natural beaches, local hang-outs, first-rate fishing and historic Fort Pickens. Pensacola Beach has been named among the nation’s top 10 beaches by TripAdvisor.

Forecast here in Toronto is for freezing rain and snow, so I'm going to stay in the south as long as my archives hold out. This shot was taken at Lover's Key in Florida. With a name like that, how could you go wrong, no matter where you go.
Ca' d'Zan, a Mediterranean Revival residence in Sarasota, Florida, was the winter home of the American circus owner, developer and art collector John Ringling and his wife Mable
Craig Key was originally named Camp Panama, and was not a natural island, but a wide spot on the Overseas Railroad right-of-way. It was originally a vacation spot and flag stop on the railroad. Roland W. Craig leased the island from the railroad in the early 1930s, and by 1935 the island had been named Craig, Florida. Former president Herbert Hoover sailed his yacht out of Craig at times in the 1930s. The island's greatest claim to fame, however, is being the landfall site of the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane. Captain Ivar Olsen, who had been taking refuge from the storm in his dry-docked boat near the island, recorded a barometer measurement of 26.35 inches of mercury (892 mbar), the lowest sea-level atmospheric pressure ever recorded on land. The town was a total loss, but was rebuilt, and prospered as a vacation spot after the storm.
Originally a single island, two more man-made Keys were added, one to the southwest in 1955, and one to the northeast some time later. The name of the town was officially changed to "Craig Key" in 1971.

It's not the end of the world
but as they sang
it's the end of the world as we know it
encroaching oil, debris
disappearing fuel
glut of people
tomato blight
like potato famine
too many rich, poor
not enough in the middle
holding the center
together
It's the end of the world as we knew it
but I
yeah
I feel fine.

Merry Christmas. We had an awesome sunrise along the Alabama Gulf Coast this morning. It was truly wonderful being out there as the sun crested the horizon to start Christmas day. It also gave me a chance to play with my new ND filter .

A roseate spoonbill flew by in the overcast one morning on the gulf coast of Texas. It seemed appropriate to post on the anniversary of the oil spill.

Taken on the Houston Ship Channel. I finally got one decent shot of the lightning. I wish I could have included more sky, but I'm dependent on the window to steady the camera and this is what the angle of the window yielded.
This scene taken in front of our hotel reminds me of the song "Dock of the Bay" although it is actually the Gulf of Mexico looking out from St. Joseph's Sound.

Warm day in January and fishermen going after the big one from the fishing pier at St Andrews State Park, Florida
The spoonbills were very attractive in their breeding plumage, and this was shown off particularly well when they banked in flight.
Most of the images I've posted recently have been from the archives. I did get a few new shots the other day though as Fay had passed us by again and was up in the panhandle. The waves were pretty good for the Gulf and the clouds were great. One can use this lens in such a way to minimize distortion, but I always like using it to maximize it. Guess that's just me, and you'll have to put up with it for a while. ;-) This might have been a better photo without the fisheye, but live and learn, as long as it's fun.
Hopefully, Mike is off being pursued by a large, romantically inclined elk and won't see this. ;-)

This was taken in the morning, it was a beautiful day, the beach was empty except for two couples who were enjoying the sunrise wrapped in a red blanket....
