Our Grilled Cheese Invitational prizewinner.: a judge's award, the first-place spaz award and third-place amateur Kama Sutra.

 

Grilled halloumi with squid-ink chèvre, caramelized onion, mint-pistachio sauce and octopus confit we made in a crock pot plugged into the rental car's cigarette adaptor on the drive down to Pasadena.

Arguably the most elegant one out there. The bread is immersed in raw sugar then caramelized to a glistening crisp in a hot pan. Filled with vanilla bean mascarpone, this sandwich has the brittle bite and creamy heart of authentic crème brûlée.

Today ended up being full of lots of walking. I started off at the 2nd Annual NorCal Regional Grilled Cheese Invitational at Dolores Park. See more at:

We got there early and donated $2 a piece for wristbands to be judges. Overall, the event was fun but I wish I was competing and not just a judge. The system for dispersing samples to be judged could have been run much smoother. I tried a sandwich in the Kama Sutra category with cheese, mustard and fried egg that was pretty good. All we could talk about was how we'd prepare our sandwiches next year.

 

Next, tapas lunch at Picaro, followed by Cardamom rose ice cream down the street. Then, we walked down to Market and visited this great art store, Flax. After that we walked all the way to Castro and enjoyed some sangria and conversation. Finally, we took the Muni back downtown, walked some more and enjoyed desert crepes in the mall. It was an awesome random day but I was so relieved to take my shoes off when I got home!

Grilled Cheese Truck - Cheesy mac and rib melt.

This unassuming petit four of a grilled cheese begins with homemade chocolate bread, mascarpone and a cream cheese filling. Drizzled with strawberry caramel, the sandwich is finished with Cool Whip, fresh strawberry, and the kinetic kick of strawberry Pop Rocks.

Pelian’s Lament #2 (aka Duck Season) by Team Combs!: Duck was a popular ingredient at this year’s Invitational. This steaming pan of gooey Fontina Val d’Aosta cheese, duck foie gras and duck terrine caught everyone’s attention. It was nestled between thick slices of Rockenwagner white bread, and crowned with "unripened" green tomato jam and a balsamic reduction. The entire sandwich was then fried in a bubbling cauldron of duck fat.

From Wurstküche in downtown Los Angeles, the rattlesnake and rabbit sausage was slathered in chipotle butter and grilled pepper jack between thin slices of homemade chipotle jalapeño bread. The crispy golden sandwich was drizzled with an avocado, tomatillo, tequila, tarragon and cilantro reduction.
