The view from high above the city looking South towards the Empire State Building and on the far right the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the Goldman Sachs Tower in Jersey City, NJ. You can also see World Trade Center 1 (the Freedom Tower) rising above all the rest of the World Trade Center Buildings just to the right of the Empire State Building.

I was at a client office in the Grace Building for my day job this week. I wanted to get a shot of the skating rink in Bryant Park with the skyline, but they were too high up to get that shot. The light isn't great here, but this was the only opportunity to get this shot.

View from the Empire State Building in New York City, NY looking down to the north. I found a number of shots I'd taken in the summer that I'd lost and this is part of the batch.

I used two images for this exposure and blended in photoshop and I actually like the result much better than HDR (well what passes for a lot of HDR here on flickr & what I do :) ). Maybe I'm doing something wrong in photomatix...

Interested in your thoughts. Have a great weekend and thank you as always for the comments & views. Hopefully there is a thunderstorm in NYC on Sunday night as forecast :).

More and more too, the old name absorbs into me Mannahatta, 'the place encircled by many swift tides and sparkling waters.' How fit a name for America's great democratic island city! The word itself, how beautiful! how aboriginal! how it seems to rise with tall spires, glistening in sunshine, with such New World atmosphere, vista and action! Walt Whitman

The name Manhattan derives from the word Manna-hata, as written in the 1609 logbook of Robert Juet, an officer on Henry Hudson's yacht Halve Maen (Half Moon). A 1610 map depicts the name Manahata twice, on both the west and east sides of the Mauritius River (later named the North River, and now called the Hudson River). The word "Manhattan" has been translated as "island of many hills" from the Lenape language. The Encyclopedia of New York City offers other derivations, including from the Munsee dialect of Lenape: manahachtanienk ("place of general inebriation"), manahatouh ("place where timber is procured for bows and arrows"), or menatay ("island").

I always prefer the place of general inebriation due to New Amsterdam's history regarding drinking. I may be wrong but I've heard that the ratio of bars to people was roughly 1 to 9 [edit: changed due to mistake pointed out by Lanzen (thanks!)] (anyone have information on this?).

Like most photographers, tourists, and NYC residents, I love the Top of the Rock (of course, if you love the TotR you should visit Steve Kelleys page). Quite frankly, it is the best observatory in all of New York City. Even when One World Trade Center's observatory opens up, due in part to its lack of an open-air deck, it will still be ranked behind TotR.

Grace Building Reflected in 1095 Avenue of the Americas

Taken while walking around Bryant Park, one of our favourite places in New York

The Grace Building is a skyscraper located at Avenue of the Americas (aka 6th Ave.) near Bryant Park and the New York Public Library. It was designed by Gordon Bunshaft and completed in 1974, the year Portugal finally became a democratic nation. The most notable aesthetic attribute of this building (193m tall) is the elegant concave vertical slope of its north and south facades. The Grace is covered in white travertine, which forms a contrast against the black windows - ah, this lad had just came off the wall

A great weekend to all my friends

Went out last night expecting to photograph a snow storm but alas nothing except for a brief bit of snow in Brooklyn later. Not sure why the Empire State Building was red - since its a bit early for Valentine's Day.

I went up to the 86th floor observation deck on the Empire State Building in New York City this evening and outside of incredibly long lines I noticed some interesting conversation around me.

The basic theme was what direction people where looking at and the arguments that ensued resulting in grudging realizations on the part of one of the protagonists that they were in fact in error. This was a view to the south of downtown for a few minutes :).

Its my feeling that the lines (at least 2 hours) left the tourists in no mood to truly enjoy the view.

I went back the GRACE building, because a homeless looking guy that saw me shooting the building at the front, said that I could make the perfect shot of the building on the backside.

One of the things you learn is that people are very helpful in Manhattan. You dont have to look lost that many seconds before somebody asks you if they can be at any help.

So even a homeless looking guy care if I get the perfect shot of a building or not ;o)

Maybe thats the message in this upload... ;o)
