Franklin Mountains SP, El Paso, CA

Another view of the city lights on the other side of the mountains at the Anthony Gap.

Walk towards the lights

OK, maybe not an oasis. Maybe just a puddle, but the wide angle lens makes it appear larger.

Agave blooms dance and sway under an ominous sky in the windy foothills of the Franklin Mountains, just outside of El Paso, TX. It rains with surprising frequency here this time of year.

The Franklin Mountains divide the city of El Paso into multiple parts, with the strongest division between east and west. The West side of the city is in the Rio Grande valley, and the North East side of the city is on the desert floor and is the home of Fort Bliss. These mountains really help define the city -- the city exists because it was one of the major transportation routes across the continent because it was easier to travel through the pass between the mountain ranges that transverse much of North America.

Thanks again to Shane Lipson for taking my family up in his plane to see the city from these new vantage points.

You can take a hundred pictures from a plane and, well 100 of them can turn-out pretty badly. This was the one of 100 that I took just after takeoff from El Paso, Texas, headed for Phoenix, Arizona, that I liked.

Various chronological aspects of my hometown are depicted here.

My grandmother Lulu, who died before my birth, is buried here.

It was amazing to see the cities of El Paso, Texas, USA and Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico from the air. This view shows part of the west side of the mountain. The Rio Grande is below us.

Despite having relatively few comments, this is by far my most-viewed photo. It's also my most frequently stolen photograph and I've caught quite a few folks using it without permission, including one of our local TV stations (two separate occasions) and even someone who tried to submit it in a local photo contest. I caught them (and a few others) in the act and was able to stop the infringement. Please don't steal images; it's not cool.
