Lenny's #Pizzeria was founded in 1953 and has been run by Frank Giordano and his family since 1983. Lenny’s Pizza became famous after it was used in a scene for the movie where the character played by John Travolta is seen ordering two slices of #pizza from Lenny’s, and eating them “double-decker” style, one piled on top of the other :pizza::pizza:. Jay & Lloyd's Kosher Deli is a 3rd-generation Jewish #delicatessen that opened in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn in 1993. They are known for their home-cured corned beef and pastrami and their friendly service. Even though it is near the end of September and the first weekend of the fall season, it reached 91 degrees F yesterday in New York City so a visit to Nathan's seemed appropriate. Nathan's @originalnathans was opened in 1916 by Nathan Handwerker, a Jewish immigrant from Poland. Nathan's became popular in #ConeyIsland due to its low prices (5 cents a hot dog) attention grabbing #signage and attractive location by the beach. We not only love its hot dogs but also its array of #neon signage. The large vertical #neonsign was installed in the 1930s and the others along the #storefront were added in the 1960s. People often ask us what #storefront that we have photographed is our favorite. It's a very difficult question for us to answer because we have such a personal connection to many of the places especially because we often spend hours with the owners asking them questions about the history of their store. As huge fans of #typography and #lettering one of our favorites definitely is Marie's. We love the #script and the simple black and white #type used in the diamonds. Jay Dee Bakery in Forest Hills, Queens was open for nearly 60 years before it closed in 2009. We loved its #ArtDeco #storefront which had an amazing reverse channel #neonsign with a unique #font. We also loved the Ravenna green mosaic columns surrounding the windows which had an orange and red vertical swirl pattern. Jay Dee Bakery was known for its kosher cookies including rainbow :rainbow: and cherry cookies as well as their classic black and white cookie. In honor of Papaya King 85th Anniversary they are selling their famous #hotdog for just 32 cents as well as their signature tropical :palm_tree: drinks for 32 cents both today March 3rd and tomorrow March 4th. Papaya King was founded in 1932 by Constantine "Gus" Poulos on the corner of Third Avenue and 86th Street. Poulos had discovered the papaya on a trip to Cuba and decided to dedicate his "tropical" drink stand to it. When he fell in love with a German woman from the neighborhood, she convinced him to add frankfurters, a German staple, to the menu and the marriage of Hot Dogs and Papaya Drinks :tropical_drink: began. The 86th street location has an amazing #vintage #neonsign with a distinct #font which has been replicated in their newer locations in the East Village and Brooklyn and even in Las Vegas. La Pastora Bakery in the Bronx has been in business for nearly 40 years. The third-generation owner told us that his grandfather started the business after moving to the United States from Puerto Rico and that they still use all of his original recipes. We loved its gorgeous #script #signage made of porcelain tiles. When we interviewed the 2nd-generation owner, Giuseppe Chirico in 2009 for our book “Store Front II-A History Preserved”, he told us that when he first started working at the store after he returned home from World War II, “ Most of the clothes we sold were big in size because everyone in the area was Italian and Italians eat a lot! Now, the neighborhood has changed in age (lots of younger people) and size (the younger people are skinny)”.
