Eristalis pertinax - Tapered Drone fly.

I found this very helpful for identifying hoverflies, British ones in particular.

Delicate little creatures.

IMG_4714-5

I was wanderging around my neighbour's garden when this strange insect landed. It looks a little like a hover fly, but the eye is something that I haven't seen before. These are full frame photos and not cropped. The last photo shows that the fly is the size of a hover fly but a bit more chunky. Thank you Darrel for your ID.

Another endearing little creature, common dung fly.

A little Messingham Hoverfly, not sure of the ID though, too many for me to choose from!

Bit of a garden safari and all I found that stood still long enough was this fly! Starting to get the hang of my Elicar macro lens and ring flash.

Recomend view in HD

Though it was about time that I put up a macro seeing it is getting that time of the year. Macro is not really my thing and I am very much a novice but it passes the time when the birds get scarce on the estuary. I hope this shot passes the Flickr safety levels for porn lol

Best viewed large on black

Im not sure if its just me, but i think flies are strangely beautiful when you see them close up!, another taken with a reverse 17-40. best viewed full size on black, thanks again ;-)

This might be my last image for a while, until flickr sorts its problems out, since the new layout I'm finding, like thousands others its almost impossible to upload photos, its a fantastic platform for sharing and storage, i just wish they would leave it alone, I'm really not liking the new white background too !

Day 120 2015

Photos like this are why i love the efs 60mm so much!

A fly basks in the sunshine

Allegany County, NY (USA)

Species of marshes and wet meadows. Found at edge of reed-bed in Jersey

I have witnessed many flies blowing bubbles recently, they blow it out then suck it back in. Are they aiding digestion, cleaning mouth-parts or does anyone have any better suggestions?
