From cinematreasures.org” The Art Moderne-style State Theatre, located on Main Street near Colfax Avenue opened May 14, 1942 with Gene Tierney in “Sundown”. It was operated by the Butterfield chain until the 1960’s. In February 1967 it was taken over by Fox Eastern Theatres Corp.
During the 1950’s and 1960’s, it was one of four theatres open in Benton Harbor, along with the Liberty Theatre, City Theatre, and Lake Theatre. But today, only the State Theatre remains standing, although the theatre is currently closed.” #drivein #driveinmovie #movies #movie #bentonharbor #cinematreasures #cinema #cinemapalace #signage #ipulledoverforthis #michigansign #statetheater #ig_signage #trb_ipoft_signs #marquee #everything_signage #tgjcinema #just_unitedstates #backroad_visions #style_and_decay #midwestsnaps #explore_countryside_ #michigan

We love its #handpainted #signage with the pizza :man: chef and the #neon :it: Italian Pizza sign in the window. #film #type #typography #dailytype #signgeeks #everything_signage #signcollective #typevstime #tv_retrotype #guardiancities #myfeatureshoot #pizza #pizzeria
This Washington Heights restaurant was founded in 1968 and specialized in #friedchicken with its special mix of "Spanish" spices and seasonings. We love its #signage with its mix of #script and sans serif #font and the little cowboy chick :hatched_chick: with a holster, holding a pop gun firing out the word "Fried"! It specializes in thin-crust Italian :it:pizza and according to the manager they still make their pizza :pizza: the same way it has always been made, shredding the cheese by hand. #neon #signgeeks #signage #everything_signage #trb_ipoft_signs #signcollective #type #typography #typevstime #typeinspiration #fontastic #popyacolour

This is sad news for the independent newsstand as print sales continue to shrink and they are forced to rely on sales of other items. We love this #vintage news stand that also advertises that it sells comics, chips, candies :lollipop: and magazines (Spanish) and even Kodacolor VR-G. #storefront #disappearingfaceofnewyork #signgeeks #everything_signage #signcollective #signsofgrime #ig_signage #typography #typevstime #dailytype
Barry's Trading Post
Yale, B.C.
Back in 1858, Yale was a gold rush town. At its peak, it had a population of around 15,000 and was reputed to be "the biggest city west of Chicago and north of San Francisco." By all accounts, it was a real wild west town full of gambling halls, saloons and houses of ill repute.
Today, it is a tiny (pop. 181) but quite charming community which embraces its colourful history. There are a handful of buildings dating back to the 1860's which are maintained as historic sites. There used to be a few businesses clustered along the highway -- a motel, restaurant, gas station -- but they all seemed to be closed while "Barry's Trading Post" has the corner on everything. Signage on the Post indicates they're a cafeteria, gift shop, market, post office, junk food specialist, supplier of hunting & fishing supplies including licenses and seller of lottery tickets. Whew, that's an impressive list.
The above is an excerpt from my first blog post on my brand new blog. Check it out:
Park Delicatessen in Carroll Gardens was originally an Italian deli/grocery shop, which catered to the mainly Italian population in the neighborhood in the 1950s. As the Carroll Gardens neighborhood gentrified attracting many young professionals, the #delicatessen changed its focus offering many prepared meals. We love that it maintained its original #signage. We love how this small #momandpop shop kept their original #signage visible and did not cover it up with the newer plastic awning. Sadly, according to the @lodownny Chung's Candy :lollipop: & Soda Stand has now closed and a for rent sign is visible across the #storefront. #signgeeks #disappearingfaceofnewyork #signsofgrime #signcollective #ig_signage #typevstime #everything_signage #dailytype #lodownny
This old-school #hardware store has been in business since 1939. Seymour Shepetin's brothers, who were all electricians, ran the shop until they all passed away while serving in World War II, leaving Seymour the business. We couldn't think of a more patriotic store :us:than this. Bright Food Shop in Chelsea was in business from 1938-2007. Upon closing, the original #neon sign which wrapped around the corner, was carefully removed and stored by the owners. Earlier this year, they reached out to us to let us know that they donated their #neonsign to the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati. @americansignmuseum. We are so happy to hear that such a beautiful #sign was saved and can now be seen again! #signage. #signgeeks #typevstime #storefront #jj_texttypographical #signcollective #fontastic #typography #type #dailytype #everything_signage #ig_signage
Milon is a family-owned restaurant, which has been in business since 1982. As seen in this photo, Milon and its neighboring restaurants, take #Diwali very seriously and have decorated their interiors with thousands of lights.
The owner of Milon told us that in the summer, they have to unplug lots of their lights because when the air conditioner is running, they overload the circuits! Photo from 2010 and full interview with owner appear in our book "New York Nights". #storefront #diwalidecor #lodownny #ig_signage #everything_signage #festivaloflights
There was an exclusive appearance of "Kiss the Sky" starring Jimy Bleu, the world's longest running Jimi Hendrix tribute artist. Cafe Wha? has a long history of giving many new musicians and performers their start including Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, Woody Allen, Lenny Bruce, and Richard Pryor. We love the #vintage #neonsign this drug store has as well as the pay phone outside the #storefront. There are not too many pharmacies that still use the word "DRUGS" in their name although much of their business is still derived from the sale of drugs (legally of course)! Emey's Bike Shop in the Gramercy neighborhood has a facade made of zinc, which dates back to around 1900.
