Striped Blue Crow - Euploea mulciber

Khao Yai National Park, Thailand

Doi Suthep-Pui NP, Chaing Mai, Thailand

Family : Nymphalidae

Sub-Family : Danainae

Species : Euploea mulciber mulciber

Distributed from India, through Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. It is a large butterfly with a wingspan of 80-90mm and they are unpalatable to predators. Although very common they are a difficult species to photograph as they are very nervous of humans. I see them all the time in Thailand but I have yet to get a shot of the beautiful iridescent blue on the upper surface of the wings. Habitat is rainforest and humid deciduous forest at elevations between sea level and about 1000m. Males and females puddle on damp ground but the latter is more often seen nectaring on various flowering bushes.

This species is polyphagous and has many larval host plants including Ficus altissima, Ficus racemosa (Moraceae ), Nerium indicum, Nerium oleander (Apocynaceae) , and Toxocarpus villosus (Asclepiadaceae). Females lay their eggs singly on the underside of a leaf on the host plant. The eggs take 3 days to hatch and the resulting larva goes rapidly through 5 instars in 11-12 days before pupating. After 6-7 days of development the new adult emerges and the next lifecycle begins.

All my insect pics are single, handheld shots of live insects in wild situations.

I was surprised seen this butterfly mating with the dead one. As you can see in the bottom is other butterfly without head.

端紫斑蝶是常見的蝶種,成蝶的外貌普通,不過他銀色的蛹則是令人為之驚豔~
